OEM illuminated trunk release button

Hi folks,

I am going to share my experience with this small mod that seems pretty popular in Japan: http://ameblo.jp/zn6-86-fa20/entry-1...c=thumb_module

Difficulty: if you own a Phillips screwdriver, you can do it.
Time: 10 min.

You'll need:
  1. A LED-equipped trunk button: Toyota part SU003-05478
  2. Two of these pre-fitted wires: Toyota part 82998-12750
They turned out to be crazy expensive (€20+ a piece) through my Toyota dealer so I ordered replacement parts from Japan instead: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/a...43-1-cavs03bk/
  3. To avoid cutting and soldering, I tapped into the harness with two of these: http://global.rakuten.com/en/store/a...0/item/pt-741/
  4. If you don't want to tap directly into the car's harness, you can use this "extension wiring loom": Subaru part H0077AJ001 (I didn't use it)

The pictures in the Japanese blogs are pretty self explanatory but here are the main steps:

1. Remove the stock button. To do so, you'll need to remove the side panel as shown below and you'll be able to unclip the module with the dash dimmer and trunk button. You do not need to remove the lower panel (don't do step 2 from the image).
http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/481181dash.jpg

2. Swap the cover and the electronics from the new button into the frame of the stock button. Be careful, the translucent cover of the new button is pretty fragile, take your time.

It should look like this:
http://cdn.mkimg.carview.co.jp/minka...t=425d2370a235

3. Add the power supply to the trunk button connector. That's where the 2 small wires come in.
http://cdn.mkimg.carview.co.jp/minka...t=425d2370a235

You can just slide them right in (that's what she said ?), if you open the cover it will look like this:
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/86...3075888550.jpg

4. Connect the + wire to the purple wire from the dimmer harness, the ground wire to the black and white wire. That's where I used the connectors shown in item 3 in the parts list.

5. Put everything back together, enjoy the extra 10 hp and all the women throwing themselves at you.

Crappy iPhone pic of my car (AFAIK, first LHD twin with it):

I didn't know this was an available part. I've been wanting an illuminated button.

4 pictures arent showing!

adamg 01-20-2015 02:27 PM

this is pretty awesome

Guillaume 01-20-2015 03:49 PM

I reuploaded a few pics, everything should show up now.

STV3 01-20-2015 03:58 PM

its the little things that count

NWFRS 01-20-2015 04:45 PM

Thank you!

Still, I feel fortunate. Most of the switches in our cars are illuminated. Every time I want to drive my wife's Rav4 at night, I have to turn on the overhead to locate the alternate seating position switch. Additionally, I don't remember the door locks or window switches being lit either, but correct me if I'm wrong. It's a US market 2013 Rav4 Limited...

My 2015 has an illuminated trunk button... I just assumed every year had them

Awesome. You should see if the moderators can move this to the DIY section ~!!!

I didn't know. If someone could get the part number, that would avoid the button internal swapping step.

I was on board until this part, my mudflaps already get me unmanageable amounts of ladyparts. Oh well.

Tell me about it, I can't get any rest ever since I put on those hinge and bolt covers.

Pretty cheap, so much so that I kind of forgot. Somewhere around €15 for the 6 parts.

DaJo 01-21-2015 05:14 AM

Thank you kind sir!

Did you have to remove the hinges for any of those?

(Sorry to de-rail this thread a little... Just a little train-drift ;))

You're most welcome. No need to remove the hinges. You'll have to slightly adjust the plastic hinge cover; a 30 sec job.

Check this out: http://minkara.carview.co.jp/en/user...2823/note.aspx

[There is also a door lock cover that I didn't get since I have the TRD door stabilizer]

Darn... Same... Got those TRD stabilizers... Guess those won't work... :P

Anyways, so both sides of those hinge covers are interchangeable huh~

Guillaume 01-21-2015 05:25 AM

No they're not, which is why there is a different part number for each.

Oh right! Sorry, I thought that hinge part consisted of 2 pieces per door. :bonk:

All we need is part SU003-05478, correct?

No, you also need the two wires with their specific connectors (specific as in, you won't find them outside of Japan).

It's all explained pretty clearly in the original post.

Chad86 04-07-2015 06:13 PM

Can you provide the purchase link for SU003-05478 from Japan
This part is approx. 39.72 CAD through my dealership.

I have contacted Nigel JDM to see if they can get me these parts including the OEM switch bezel SU003-02497
at a more reasonable price.

:thanks:@ZOMFGAARON!

After purchasing through www.amayama.com I can say, from experience, this is definitely the best site to purchase OEM parts.
Good prices, international shipping and the parts arrived in less than a week with zero customs charges.

I highly recommend to anyone looking for OEM parts.

As long as the illumination is tapped into the purple wire of the dimmer switch.

edit: Also, you must tap the black and white wire right next to the purple for your ground point. It technically controls the dimming.

Actually I think I was wrong. It's technically controlled through the ground wire, not the 12V+. So, you have to make sure you tap the black and white wire (pin 3) right next to the purple wire (pin 2) coming from the dimmer as your ground (as opposed to just grounding it on a bolt somewhere). The purple wire makes a convenient + wire to tap though since it's right there.

Nope. It does dim.

What did you use as the ground?

In Europe we have on GT86 this part no. SU00305478 from late 2014 (illuminated).

It is the same part number I give in the original post. It is not plug and play with pre-2015 cars, as explained.

banane63 05-24-2015 04:56 AM

Merci Guillaume ! T'as plus qu'à le mettre sur le site français !

Just a thing : if you remove the copper part, the moving part of the knob can be removed and then it is easier to remove the transparent top part from it.
