Couple questions before I buy
Hi all,
Pretty excited at the prospect of finally getting a FT86 but I have a couple questions before I shoot from the hip. 1. What kind of petrol usage are you getting? 2. Any issues so far with the car? Heard some mention of the seals on the brake lights not being done properly and rattles in the cabin when going at speed. 3. Should I change the tyres as soon as I get the car to something more grippy. 4. Are humps an issue? Have a couple in my area and don't want to be damaging the car. Any other notes and items of mention you have would be appreciated. |

So far since I got my car end of October I haven't had any issues with anything. The place that I work has a huge hump as you go over the train tracks but it goes over smoothly, with an angle I might add. Hope this helps!! |

1) Depends on how you drive. I average 9.3l per 100, but can between 8.5 and 11. 2) I had boot clicking and light seal issues, but mine was made in May'12 and the newer cars are not effected, from what I have heard. 3) Still have factory 16's. They are have enough grip for road use, but if you want you can break them loose and have some fun. 4) Never had a issue with humps, but you need to watch curbs when parking, as it is lower and will scratch the front. |

From my experience with my BRZ this is what I have to report.
1) On highway crusing around 125 km/h having cleared instantaneous consumption is about 7.5. During my weekly commute with traffic and all i think its just over 9.0 l. 2) I think I have the moisture issues with my lights but only when its really heavy rain. Had a noise coming from diff but was fixed from an oil change. Also had excessive oil consumption but somehow this is gone after my 2year service @ about 24k kilos.' 3) Tyre are awesome. I have stock 17s and the only real reason i would change them is for nice look. Handling for day to day as mentioned is good. Havent been on the track so I cant judge. They are awesome on the Skidpan thou.:burnrubber: 4) Normal speed humps are not an issue but do note you cant take them at the same speed you would a yaris or something like that. I have found myself scrapping on certain speed humps but very rarely. Now that that has been sorted when can we expect you to pick your car up? :cheers: |

Safe to say that at 300K you're not buying a Bentley, but an affordable sports car. 3) 13.000km on stock 16's. They're a bit janky in the wet, but they are fun. And they offer enough grip even in the wet, provided you don't stomp down on the accelerator mid corner. 4) no real issues. It handles them better than my Bravo Sport. As for sidewalks - i find the ones around here (Windhoek) not normally a "threat". Steep driveways on the other hand are best done cautiously. |

Hi,
I've had my car for a few months now, and so far am loving it. I have a few small rattles, but nothing too irritating. It comes with the hard ride. Speed bumps are not a problem at slow speeds. Haven't had any moisture issues, but then I also swapped out my lights for Valenti's as soon as I got the car. Its very easy to get the back out, if you want to, but not too much of a handful if you are driving normally. Cheers |

1. Buy it 2. Drive it 3. Mod it 4. Love it 1. Open road (dbn to jhb): 6.8l/100km. Urban: 8.8l/100 km 2. Tail light condensation in heavy rail. Gear lever rattle. People getting strained necks from turning and looking as you drive past. 3. No. Stock tyres are fun. Just learn the point at which they let go as above. 4. Not really. Humping is an issue coz the car interior isnt big enough Enjoy the car man. The drive is amazing, but just a little hard to use as a daily driver. |

My advice keep (160i and above) the rolla or sell privately. You wont get much as a trade in. 160i can make a nice daily so that every weekend you appreciate the GT86 more and more. Worked for me until someone crashed into my one.!! I love @Ds3ire's comment about peoples necks! |

Don't listen to the guys who'll tell you that you'll lap half a second faster with better Tyres etc etc. you're buying the car for road use. Get your driving to the limit of the Tyres and then only then get better Tyres so you can learn the limit on those. You actually have to work to break traction on stock, but you can do it which is 90% of the appeal of the car. Do eeeeeeet! :burnrubber: |

Tyres - sure, you'll go faster with better tyres and wheels. My experience is stock -> UHP gives about 3 secs/lap (4%). UHP -> racing semis gives another 2 secs a lap (another 3%). So what. You go faster and take more risk, but it's not necessarily more exciting. If you aren't racing competitively, ultimate speed is irrelevant. Your fun-meter is what counts, and that works great with stockies. :) Especially when you're learning your car, stock tyres give you a discovery experience with much less risk. In my case, my missus gives me a fat ear if a tyre chirps, so I upgraded to tyres that never chirp - so I can get away with murder. :) PS: Stop worrying, it's a great car. JUST DO IT!! |
If you're not used to turbo power, and have a lesser/older car the 86 will sate your performance needs. I have 52000km on the stock 16" Yoko's and they grip very well - some say more so than the high spec 17's, be careful in the wet as @Alang said (I was also there but with less tread!) as the electrics can't alter physics . My car has no problems with humps and bumps. The taillight thing happened to me and was swopped out under warranty without too many questions - just a cellphone photo is enough - my mirrors were also floppy and were also changed along with a vibrating gearlever. I'm averaging about 9 - 9.5l /100km under town and enthusiastic driving - open road driving can yield under 7 if you concentrate.
As @Fish Eagle says - just do it! Buy it, care for it, enjoy it, learn to live with it, don't fiddle with it, love it. One of the finest handling cars I have ever driven and still love it. |

Had mine since Dec13 using as daily driver: some ppl will struggle to climb in and out - I find using your hands to push down at the bottom sill for support helps to get in/out. The boot just just manages for a full size 70cm luggage put longways (height and length) without putting down the back seats. Car is much lower and visibility down along with it- almost every car is now SUV size to you , you can't see through their windows or over their bonnets - just relax and don't rush
1. 8.5lt/100km on spirited highway driving, else 9.5lt day to day combined traffic 2. Rattles in dash just above instrument panels, squeaks a little at the rear 3. Still on the original tyres - 2nd what other members said get use to the car with std tyres and play on the skidpan - came from fwd toyota/honda cars and the first week in the 86 was eerie as the handling characteristics were foreign to me 4.You become much more aware of the road surface for any dips and imperfections. The std suspension is nicely firm without being teeth jarring - as long as you don't put the 2.4 bar pressure in the tires like the sticker in the door tells you to - the metal stud speedbumps are the worst! Also beware that the front bumper is actually longer than you think and will seldom clear over the curb. This car is not for the lazy driver for daily use , but is very rewarding and easy to drive as you get use to it - it really does go where you want it to with very little effort. |

Will watch the vids at home. Had my heart set on my mates STD in White but saw a High model on AutoTrader that ticks all the right boxes. It would also prevent me adding a new radio and the like which seems like a win win. Not sure insurance is going to take kindly to a switch to a High End model. |
