Stock Tires - Slips Easily

There's a bend on my local road which I always turn sharper than necessary just for fun, but today it was drizzling a bit, and I did the usual turn (sports mode), it slides further than I expected and I corrected it and when I corrected it, it also turned the other way more than I expected.

Honestly I was caught off guard a bit but everything was under control. I didn't know these tryes are so ungrippy and will easily slide even when traction control is on.

Was there any meat and potato's to this post or no.

Great story bro.

There's a limit to how much TC will save you when doing a purposeful slide into a corner.

Tcoat 01-10-2015 12:57 PM

Wow! Djmm that must be some good stuff you are on there!

Yep they aren't very sticky. Pretty sure they are Low Rolling Resistance.. Its part of the fun ;)

torqdork 01-10-2015 01:38 PM

You guys crack me up!

But in djmm's defense, it's Summer in Oz and depending on where he is, it might not have rained in weeks so he might have encountered dust+drizzle=spin bait.

Still, the OEM Prius tire is LRR and not worth a damn in the wet. Try PSS, an exceptional high performance all-weather tire, the best, most cost effective investment you'll make.

Ah but after a year or more of owning the car he should no longer be taken by surprise about the tire performance in different conditions.
That be like me coming on here and saying "wow I would never have guessed this car slips a lot in the snow "

Yes, the stock tires do not have much grip - especially in wet and cold conditions. You want to be careful about over-correcting when counter steering or you will fish tail and lose control without TC/SC intervention. A technique I use is very quickly just give it a bit of counter steer and return to the center, and if it needs more, repeat until you are back in line. This way, you can have a nice controlled drift. But you also have to be careful with your throttle during this too. You actually want to stay on the the throttle a little as it puts more weight on the rear and balances it and allows the rear diff to work.

But as you found out, even if you are not too good at all of that, the modern electronics will still save you most of the time.

2. To engage or disengage a motor vehicle's clutch.

n.1. A hand, claw, talon, or paw in the act of grasping.
2. A tight grasp.
3. often clutches Control or power: caught in the clutches of sin.
4. A device for gripping and holding.
5. a. Any of various devices for engaging and disengaging two working parts of a shaft or of a shaft and a driving mechanism.
b. The apparatus, such as a lever or pedal, that activates one of these devices.

6. A tense, critical situation: came through in the clutch.
7. A clutch bag.

adj. Informal 1. Being or occurring in a tense or critical situation: won the championship by sinking a clutch putt.
2. Tending to be successful in tense or critical situations: The coach relied on her clutch pitcher.

Idiom: clutch at straws

I've put a few chewing gums on all 4 tires now to improve grippiness. Value for money mod.

@Tcoat so I tried that clutch thing you suggested.. Mind = Blown!
Now, if only I can get that center gauge to level 10! I can only get to 7.4. I must not be worthy of this car

Sweet OP your tires are doing exactly what they are supposed to do!

For a while I had decided to pick up some MPSS after the stocks wear out but I think I may pick up another set of the stock tires since they are so much damn fun sliding around everywhere. I think with the power this car has stock these tires are great for maximizing how much fun you can have.

Try downshifting into first at 50, that should get it there

Edit: because math.

0. They were NOT made for the Prius.
1. They are not Prius tyres, only the very top end Prius has them and I think that's only available in Japan and and has a 1.8 petrol engine.
2. They have a fairly poor rolling resistance in Euro tests
3. They have a very high grip rating in Euro dry and braking wet tests

As the OP...

In the dry you will get 100% grip, fine. You can go to 105% the limit and get a bit of tyre squeal. Go to 106% grip and the the level of grip available falls smoothly to about 85% and you slide.

In the wet you can go to 100% wet grip fine (probably about 80% the dry grip on a clean road), you can go a little more and get a tiny bit of float, but when you actually get a slide, the grip levels drop suddenly and unforgivably to about 60% or less. So if your not expecting that kind of grip drop off, you'll get a surprise. If you are expecting it, you get a load of fun at lower speeds.

MATHS! Jeez... did you guys burn dictionaries when you parted company with the English?

It's Mathematics. Note the 'ing S on the end, it's plural. That makes the contracted, abbreviated version also a plural, thus mathS.
