Question about resonators
 

Hey all, I'm looking to upgrade my exhaust and have narrowed it down somewhat. I am looking for some clarification that maybe some of you can provide.

I am going 2.5", staying N/A. I *might* upgrade headers at one point, which may affect my decisions now...

Options:
1) Perrin 2.5" resonated catback, Berk 2.5" front pipe w/high flow cat (no resonator option), Perrin Overpipe

This was my first choice, but then I came accross Nameless' overpipe/front pipe combo piece.

2) Perrin 2.5" resonated catback, Nameless OP/FP (resonated or non-res, not sure which I should pick since catback is resonated too)
Or...
3) Nameless axleback and OP/FP combo

Keeping in mind that the (3) uses the stock midpipe which has an inline resonator, my question is should I get two resonators? Does the car come stock with two resonators?

I am looking for a refined sound, no rasp or tin, would option 1) which doesnt have a resonator in the front pipe be a bad choice in terms of sound considering high flow catted headers in the future? Should I go with two resonators, or is that overkill/useless?

I guess my end goal in terms of volume and rasp is to end up with headers to catback upgraded and have a sound that is a little louder than just installing a perrin 2.5" resonated on a stock car.

Stock has two resonators, one in the midpipe and one in the front pipe.

There are so many permutations and combinations of exhaust components its very difficult to predict sound/rasp ect.

however in general if you have catless header and catless or high flow metalised cat midpipe your going to need resonated catback and one that very quiet like Invidia Q300, G ready evo3 or hks legamax to have any chance of eliminating rasp and an acceptable sound level (again this varies person to person) and you may even have to add a second resonator.

The stock secondary cat is quite effective at sound and rasp reduction.

Thanks for the response. I do not want ultra quiet to be honest, I just know that everyone's definition of loud is different. I like the idea of a deeper growl at all levels than what stock has, and a sound that opens up when flooring it. However, I also don't want the wife or neighbors to cut it off my car when I'm asleep.

Is one resonator with two high flow cats (assuming new headers) really loud/obnoxious?

again hard to predict.

Perin and nameless are middle of the range "loudness" wise

Q300 Evo3 or hks legamax are the quieter ones.


High rev cold start is particulary loud/resonant on these cars unless you mod your tune to eliminate it.



I have a HKS legamax with catless header and stock midpipe/cat and its plenty loud enough.

I have done cold start mods to tune so its not annoying the neighbours/family on morning startup.

Ok so it sounds like I will go with two resonators since I plan on having two high flow cats, at least at some point.

Now the second guessing comes back, will this setup be so quiet that I still sound stock? lol

It definitely won't sound stock, especially if you add headers.

Mine with just a catted overpipe and perrin resonated cat back (both 2.5") is definitely noticeably louder than stock. Not annoying, but no one would mistake it for OEM.

You have the overpipe/frontpipe combo with a cat I assume, and it's not resonated?

Would also like to learn more about resonators in general.

Nameless uses a Helmholtz resonator in their FP. What frequency is it tuned to eliminate? Those who have it installed, does it change the tune of the exhaust to higher or lower?

I've got:

- catless JDL UEL header
- JDL OP
- catted and resonated Magnaflow FP
- resonated Perrin CBE

Even with two sizeable resonators and a cat, it is definitely not OEM sounding. Not even close.

The straight-through resonators do a good job killing higher pitched rasp, but don't really do much for overall volume. I think to address that, you either need to use smaller diameter piping or a bigger muffler.

Can confirm earplugs needed with the N1. Right now I have the Tomei UEL / OP with the stock front pipe and stock exhaust and it can still be loud on cold starts. From what I've heard, the Q300 is the quietest exhaust you can go with (besides stock) so that might be a decent option over the Perrin if you're trying to minimize sound.

Keep in mind that neither of these examples used a catted header, so overall volume should be lower if you went that route.

I have a 2.5 nameless axleback with 5" mufflers and everything else stock. There is 0 rasp in the entire rev range so I don't think you need 2 resonators unless you're going with a catless header.

Question about resonators
 

I have the 3" perrin performance cat-back exhaust with resonator and loved the way it is, boy it sounds perfect for me, easy on the ears but it has the roar i want...and maybe the next step is replacing the headers or add a turbo kit/ supercharger kit that comes with header if posible...just sharing what I have and wanted...you know that in the end, it's up to you to decide what's your taste....so pick wisely and make alot of research about every mod you think before jumping into it....

I've got the Nameless catted, resonated front pipe paired with their 5" axleback (2.5"). It's noticeable louder and growlier than stock, but not raspy. The resonator was a fantastic upgrade, I spend a huge amount of time on the highway so that matters. Particularly, it's hugely beneficial coasting with the clutch still engaged, there's none of the old booming now.

Completely stock exhaust except for a muffler delete. It is obnoxious. Would a resonator make cruising through the neighborhood okay or is a muffler (which would pretty much defeat the purpose) going to be necessary? I love the look of the tips. I saved the factory muffler. I've used the OFT to tone down the startup cycle.

Just the front pipe, not an over pipe/front pipe combo. Perrin didn't make a combo pipe, and none of their front pipes had resonators.

i think it doesn't really matter how loud your muffler is, when you just want to cruize without making noise, just keep your rpm <2.5k
