FT86? GT86? What gives?

So I know the car is sold in Japan as a Toyota GT86.

But why is the forum and why are some of the vendors called FT86?

Just curious.

hmong337 12-22-2014 10:09 PM

Please read how the gt86/brz/FRS was concieved.

Basically, any company that jumped on the "FT86" name did so 1) before the car's selling name was announced, and 2) do this to avoid Toyota/Subaru lawyers.

I believe it is as follows:

Asia, South Africa, South America and Australia it is a Toyota 86.

A GT86 in Europe.

An FT86 in Jamaica

FR-S in US and canada only

And then the BRZ monicker is worldwide.

Burrcold 12-22-2014 10:24 PM

Does anyone search anymore? It takes less time to google the topic than post the topic.

Actually several countries (i.e. Australia) have several trim levels all with different letter designations. Can't think of them all off the top of my head but there are at least and R, G and GT levels.

Can't wait to see some of the more bizarre comments on this one.

Ultramaroon 12-22-2014 10:37 PM

It was its name given by Subaru back when they didn't want to build it.

Fuck That 86.

Am I the only person that ever used the term to "86 something"? We used it all the time in the army.
It truly ties in with Ultra's comment!!!!

"According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, "86" is a slang term that is used in the American popular culture as a transitive verb to mean throw out or get rid of, particularly in the food service industry as a term to describe an item no longer available on the menu, or to refuse service to a customer"

NWFRS 12-22-2014 10:46 PM

I de-badged mine.

It's just a SCION now.

Very rare.

Used it all the time in the navy. "86 it." My memory agrees with this part of the Wikipedia entry.

Another possible origin is from the U.S. Navy's Allowance Type (AT) coding system used for logistic purposes. The allowance type code is a single digit numeric that identifies the reason material is being carried in stock. Throughout the life-cycle of a warship, many pieces of equipment will be upgraded or replaced, requiring the allowance of onboard spare parts associated to the obsolete equipment to be disposed of. The AT code assigned to parts designated for disposition is AT-6.

@Tcoat did you know Scion owners in Puerto Rico get their own unique features the Scion FR-S owners don't get in the U.S.A?

They get push button start and the rear wiper on the Scions in PR that the USA doesn't get.

Kind of the samething as Canada not getting the same features as the U.S. customers.

Probably should've taken his advice and google "ft86" before getting so defensive.

"FT86" was the name given to the concepts/prototypes shown in Auto Shows before the final production versions (86, GT86, FRS, BRZ) came out. "FT" means "Future Toyota" and "86" suggests that this car follows the foot steps of the famed AE86 (google "Initial D")

Really, perform a few google searches, read up wikipedia entries on the origin of your car, and watch "Initial D", you'll have a much better understanding of how the car came to be, gain more appreciation for your car, and have a great time doing it.

That's why I said google. Much easier to search the topic you are looking for. Just add ft86club to the end of your search criteria and more accurate results will come up.

Edit: ^^what he said lol
