My 86 Keyring

3 Attachment(s)
Finished off my keyring today (I am a Jeweller (or Jeweler depending on who is reading)) and I am really happy with how it turned out.

Not sure how Toyota would feel if i choose to sell them but that's a worry for another day.

I made it in 925 Sterling silver.

Would love to hear your input, critisism or praise :P

Sorry for Pics being so big... i hate that

Calum 06-06-2012 07:02 AM

Loose the 925 on the back, as it has nothing to do with the car, and I'd send you money for one. The front was enough for me, then I saw the rim pattern in the back and was sold. Seriously, pm me if you want to sell one.

LeavingNormal 06-06-2012 07:06 AM

Yeah same here, I was looking online for a new keychain today I would definitely buy that.

Prava 06-06-2012 07:12 AM

you have a pm, good sir

Thanks, yeah agree with the 925 how it has nothing to do with the car, its normal for jewellers to stamp their metal with its according stamp. plus i didn't want to pop a toyota badge there either.

I only know much it cost me and how long it took me at this point. But i will work out a sell price soon :)
Because they are made in silver they wont be cheap, i thought about mass producing them in a shitty base metal in Taiwan but minimum 1000pc and the quality would go down the drain :(

Pseud0logik 06-06-2012 07:21 AM

Lose the 925 (or make it smaller and in a less visible spot) and I'll buy one, and I don't even have an 86.

Think you could keep the price under $30usd?

colHolm 06-06-2012 07:25 AM

that's a nice looking piece. good work!

Unfortunately at $30 i couldn't buy the silver for this job.

I will look into mass producing tomorrow :) there seems to be interest.

i will lose the 925 too (thanks for the tips everyone)

That's what I was afraid of. I'm completely ignorant to the price of jewelry, obviously.

Prava 06-06-2012 07:46 AM

Does it have decent weight to it? I'm quite ignorant in the jewelry department as well lol

Gaiakai 06-06-2012 07:55 AM

That is da shit. I was actually thinking about looking for the piston logo online if anyone had done it, but I'd definitely be interested in buying that one

JiB 06-06-2012 08:09 AM

heheh most guys are, my scales are at work but by memory it should weigh around 30grams/1.05 ounce. The dimensions are:

In inches- diameter 1.28
thickness 0.105

In Millimeters - Diameter 32.5
Thickness 2.8

Unfortunately jewellery is expensive :( My actual cost for the keyring was close to AU$110 excluding 1 hour labour. That being the prototype & master (make a mould and cast over and over) the next ones wouldnt be as expensive, say around $15 + silver $45, so raw material cost at $60. and Labour cost at $60 p.h. makes total cost $120, no profit. Too expensive for a key ring... maybe a porsche keyring :P

I just emailed a dude in Taiwan, hopefully he gets back to me soon with an idea of cost, $30 inc shipping should be plenty for a Taiwan keyring. I will let you guys know as it progresses.

Maybe toyota should jump on board and say "Joel, we love your idea! Even though it looks like our badge we will pay you 1 MILLION dollars and all you have to do is let us use this"... maybe not.

Billy2224 06-06-2012 08:26 AM

i will defs buy one off you mate, looks amazing. Im in sydney too so i guess postage would be cheaper for me :)

atledreier 06-06-2012 09:14 AM

I'd get one!

Enigmus 06-06-2012 09:35 AM

i don't know anything about jewelry either.. can it be made with another type of polished metal?

nix 06-06-2012 10:06 AM

Looks fantastic, I'd buy one as well depending on how durable the 925 is, being it will be smashing into all sorts of keys/benches/materials over its lifespan.

If you mass produce it maybe you could replace the back face with an embossed car design?

Also have you looked into the design of the keyless entry card? Would it go on a keyring or in the pocket/wallet.

JiB 06-06-2012 10:33 AM

any metal will start to show signs of wear over time. Currently looking into cheaper options. An imbossed back could look ok, but i have no idea what Mr Taiwan can do.
keyring only, yet to see the keyless card you speak of. but if you had any designs in mind i can have a look at them :)

DyoGTS 06-06-2012 10:45 AM

I love the look of it, but ideally I'd like to have the 86 logo on both sides. ... And I wouldn't need it in silver, so a cheaper material would be fine by me.

x2

JiB 06-06-2012 11:07 AM

Perhaps the 86 Logo both sides? That could work

nix 06-06-2012 11:34 AM

Yep in a durable material + black/white/red backdrop = hotcakes.

Asterisked Accolade 06-06-2012 11:38 AM

I think it looks great-- and i'm glad your key chain isn't over-saturated with lanyards, Costco cards, and bottle openers. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...lies/amuse.gif

Prava 06-06-2012 11:49 AM

I like Nix's idea. 86 on one side with a front view of the FRS eye-level with the headlights. embossed. possible color coordinated with the color of your FRS :D now THAT would be sick

ichitaka05 06-06-2012 12:13 PM

Nice design! Just a 2 things

1. If you use other metals, is it cheaper? Like Stainless, Aluminum?
2. Instead of wheel design, can you put a words? Like "Built by Passion, not by committee!"?

bleuquila 06-06-2012 12:19 PM

beautiful work! almost seems too nice to get all scratched up by keys :p

terrypm 06-06-2012 03:54 PM

Count me in also.

feedbag 06-06-2012 05:04 PM

Very nice!

If you did a run of 250 you could get them at $1.95 each. I feel like we could probably get 250 people onboard for this.

edit: opt for color fill to get black filled in the background. so $2.05 / unit.

Hanzo 06-06-2012 05:07 PM

Looks good, I like the design on the back of the wheel (looks like a Japanese family crest). Yeah Toyota probably wouldn't like that.

feedbag 06-06-2012 05:11 PM

Maybe a more lawyer proof way of distributing these:
  1. Conduct a fundraiser for a week or two
  2. After fundraiser is over, see how much money has been collected and how many we can order
  3. Ship all donors an allocation of the total units based on the percentage of the fundraiser they contributed
  4. Leave it to them to hand out to FT86 owners at car clubs, mail them to internet people, etc etc

rikdrt1 06-06-2012 11:05 PM

Im with NIX on this, i love it but it would be cool if it was made of some light metal or non-metal or rubberized so its not clanging around my pocket

i would suggest that + make it a bit smaller maybe or in black-or black-like finish..

but i am interested too - I also like the 925 btw

Rejor11 06-06-2012 11:30 PM

I'm also very interested.

Jayde 06-06-2012 11:54 PM

Looks great! I'm interested in one if you sell them!

JiB 06-07-2012 12:03 AM

I love this, and I think the wheel design on the back side is awesome. Go to production, and good luck!

86design 06-07-2012 03:26 PM

i like it looks great :)

eriktherod 06-07-2012 03:34 PM

Once you get some numbers and whatnot, check out Kickstarter. Make a project page for it and we can get pledges on here with a goal amount that is satisfactory to you. It's a great place for these types of things and makes it easier for you to keep track how many people have pledged and how much!

trackmagic 06-07-2012 04:35 PM

What did you color the black with?
