phm14 Toyobaru 86 aka Candy O

Man, it's been a good day. The hunt for my firestorm red 86 has come to a successful conclusion, and Candy O is resting peacefully in my man cave. I had the car on order for over 2 months, and late last week I started tracking dealer ads online. I found over 30 red 6MT cars by the the weekend, not one of them in Texas. Monday I printed a list of Scion dealers within 250 miles of Houston, and started calling. 41 calls later, I found my car at Allstar Scion in Alexandria LA, and when I asked, they said they would deliver the car to my house at no charge. My salesman, David Cook, along with one of their service guys showed up with the car on time, and with a full tank this morning. Service does still exist, even if you have to go to a small town dealer to get it. This FRS will se a mild street/track build. I'll use this thread to post up info on the mods I plan for the car, which will see some track time. I'll cover test fitting the set of Enkei PF01s I have here 1st, and go from there.

Got around to test fitting the Enkei PF01 17x8 +45s the other day. I find it's easier with the suspension weighted vs full droop:

Please get those wheels on ASAP. Those are on top of my list in same specs!!!

ZetaVI 06-09-2012 11:19 AM

Yeah, I'd like to see the PF01's installed.

phm14 06-09-2012 12:17 PM

PF01 install FRS-Pic Heavy

Wasn't sure about the fit when I ordered the wheels. Was deciding between the +35 & +45 offsets this wheel is offered in. Could not find any info on fitment for this size, so I just took a guess and got lucky. There's lots of room for more rubber on the inside. I measured 3/4" between the outside edge of the inner wheel lip and the extra wide stock spring perch up front, Theres much more room out back. The fender lips are nicely tapered up top for clearance. The more familiar I get with the car, the more obvious it is that higher HP FI setups are not an afterthought in the design. 5mm spacers may be doable, but another +10mm of offset may cause some rub depending on tire size, ride height and camber.

phm14 06-09-2012 12:22 PM

The car will eventually be lowered ~1" when I install coilovers. Ohlins, AST and Bilstein are on my short list, though none are available yet.

235 40 17 Dunlop Star Specs next to OEM rubber.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...6/IMG_1763.jpg

phm14 06-09-2012 12:31 PM

Measured under weight, on car with similar PSI, the new tire/wheel set up is ~1/4" shorter in height than the factory rubber. OEM tire/wheel weight was ~40.5 lbs, compared to ~40.75 lbs for the Enkei/Dunlop combo. I'm told the 235/40-17 size in the Dunlop may be discountinued.

Lots of great pictures!
Thanks for sharing! Love the Firestorm, and those wheels look great!
Congratulations! :)

What are your first impression from putting sticky tires on the car?
Did you have some experience with going wide (oversteer) on the stock tires before changing to sticky compound?

No, I babied the stock tires as they are for sale now, along with the wheels. They still have the "teats" on the shoulder treads. I've run the Star Specs before, and they won't be spared any pain, trust me. If you haven't already, invest in a good radar detector, or better yet take it to the track. It's difficult not to speed in this car.:burnrubber:

I has an 06' winning blue MX-5 sport. I loved that friggin car. I had it set up perfectly (for my needs) for the street with Eibach springs and sways and a Goodwin Roadstersport exhaust that had just the right amount of burble. Then my wife and I (who "couldn't have kids") found out we were going to be parents at 40. Goodbye MX-5 to a really nice youg guy in Florida, hello 08' Civic SI Sedan. Now that our daughter is five, and can get belted in herself, I'm looking to get an FR-S for my 45th birthday in September.
Congrats on the new FR-S! That is one sweet looking house.

New Plumbing

Caved in & ordered one of the new Nameless axleback exhausts. Was trying to hold out for a nice SS muffler in the $400. area, but got impatient. I'm told it will ship this Friday. Sound clip in post #9:

Factory Mud Guards

Thanks for all the positive comments, Guys. ~550 miles on the clock & all is well. Will be putting some serious miles on her when I drive from Houston to Whistler, BC in a couple of weeks-over 5K round trip. Installed the factory mud guards earlier-anything to cut down on cleaning track rubber off the car. Kit went on pretty easy, and fit was good. Very reasonable @ $55.00 shipped. Only thing was the hardware kit was short two of the small panel clips for the rear. Don't think they're going anywhere while I wait to get them in the mail. Should be able to add them without disassembling anything else. Also installed a crap catch behind the front grill to keep the condensing unit clean & damage free.

dude if you're driving up to whistler, you should stop by nameless on the way up. Super cool dudes, and you'd see some of their most recent crazy designs.

I'm a fan of both Miatas and Toyobarus. You have good taste

Did they require drilling and since you have a Firestorm, can you post a photo of what they look like, say a shot of from the door through the rear quarter panel, and a rear view?

I'm a fan of Z cars. Owned a S30 series '78 280Z I restored back in college & drove the stink out of it for years. Test drove a 370-very nice ride.

You drill one hole in the liner @ each corner. Hand turned the bit (8mm/ 5/16) for correct angle. Be happy to get some pics up ASAP.

Mr.Jay 06-15-2012 09:53 PM

Cool you are coming to Whistler BC?

Send me a PM maybe we can get some of the local guys to join you for a cruise!

love the look of the PF01 but they seem to be the wheel everyone is going for so I think I might go with the NT03+ instead tho I would love to see how the Pf01 look in person

OK, in the liner is OK, I had the impression you had to drill into the metal. Look forward to the pictures.

Thanks, about what I thought. Almost wish they were a bit larger, more substantial in size (go big or go home right?).

Until I decide on an aero-kit (if any) looks like I'll be adding those.
