Continental Extreme Contact DW vs. MPSS?

I'm trying to make a decision on which tires I should get. Is the MPSS worth the extra money over the Continentals? Both tires have great reviews. I'm leaning towards the Continentals since they are about $150 cheaper on tirerack. This car is a DD.

The Michelin tires are better. Value is subjective, I feel that the $$$ is well spent on the Michelins. I run Michelin pilot super sports, but have run pilot sport A/S plus all seasons in the past. I liked them also. The A/S3 replaced the A/S+.

The Continental DW's last much longer, great wet traction, but probably not near as good dry traction as the Michelin's. Cost wise the Continentals are better for someone who wants a good daily driving summer tire year round. The PSS hands down are the best tire for performance, but just have a lower tread life.

I've had my DW's on for about 14k miles now and they still have tons of life left and I am a daily driver as well.

Don't mean to threadjack but are the DW's leaps and bounds better than the stock Primacies? I am in the same boat as OP...can't decide if I want to get the MPSS or something slightly less expensive like the Contis or Bridgestones..

Thanks guys, I think i'm going to go with the Continentals then since it will ultimately save me money and the most i will do with the car any time soon is "spirited driving".

IMO rubber bands are better than the stock primacies. I've never burnt more rubber on accident than I have with these. Plus they're expensive for what they are.

They are a great tire for what they are. 1 or 2 more mpg with these tires and if you just use them as a daily driving tire they'll last you over 30,000 miles easy.

Thats a lot of $$ saved on gas. Definitely a great tire for their intended purpose.

Yeah true but I just about have zero confidence cornering on the roads around here with them. I'm going with safety over mileage on this one.

SubieNate 12-10-2014 07:18 PM

The car has consistently pulled .9ish on the skidpad in magazine tests with the stock tires. Cornering safety is not accurately measured by the ease of which you can break things loose off the line.

I'll concede great gains can be had in stopping distances in the dry.

Cheers
Nathan

I have Continental DW's and I really dislike them. The dry and wet grip is better than stock, but they lost all the steering feel on turn in the car started with. It's terrible, and they have taken a lot of the enjoyment out of driving the car. Wish they were never recommended and that I went with the MPSS. I chose the DW's because they were cheaper, which was a mistake.

I just ordered them today and they should be here and mounted tomorrow. Went 235/40/18 because I thought that going 245 will ruin the car from being too wide on stock power. Ill update after I test them out.
What size are you running if you don't mind me asking?

billyk 12-11-2014 02:25 PM

Sorry to hear that about the Conti's.

I will be in the market at some point, as all seasons are my best choice.

To be clear, it's the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's that have replaced the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, right?

I'm no expert but I believe that they are just tires for different purposes, all season (A/S) vs. Summer.

The A/S 3's replaced the A/S+ tires. They are not related to the Super Sports.

No, like I said in my previous post. The A/S3 replaced the pilot sport A/S Plus. The MPSS is a totally different tire.

MPSS = summer 300 tread wear
A/S = all season 500 tread wear

Got it.
Thanks guys!

I have 245/35/18 on 9" wheels.

265/35/18 rear, 245/35/18 front. I was convinced that I would suffer pull performance with such a wide stance, but the difference is really negligible imo.
The understeer with the stagger is evident, but totally predictable. Since I am going SC soon, I went ahead with the wide setup. Enjoy your new tires!

chas3wba0 12-11-2014 08:48 PM

I stay with Michelin for the performance but also for their warranty. There are several occasions on which my barely-used tire was destroyed by a nail or pothole, and I got a new one for just the cost of mounting and balancing. Not sure if Conti offers that?

billyk 12-14-2014 08:55 AM

Given the timing of my purchase (just bought an FRS), where I live (Maryland) and the stock tires (Summer HP), I really can't ignore the potential issues of driving Summer tires in the Winter. So far, I've driven my FRS in wet, freezing conditions and while I drove with care, the HP's didn't have me swerving all over the road - thankfully.

I have a second car to drive when it snows, so I don't have to push the HP's onto really bad winter roads. Still, I can easily find myself facing unexpected Winter weather, so I am shopping for prices on the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's in case I need to pull the trigger quickly.

I'd like to get through this Winter leaning on my other car when I have to, so that I can get some use out of the HP's before I replace them maybe a year from now. But, if I have to purchase the MPS A/S 3's soon, would my HP's be of interest to anyone? Can you actually sell these tires with 1-2k miles on them? Would they sell somewhere on this forum or on Craigslist? If so, what's the typical selling price?

gravitylover 12-14-2014 10:14 AM

I see people selling the stock rubber occasionally and it seems to run $200+. If you decide to replace them soon hit me up, the ones that came on my car are nearly worn and will need to be replaced this spring when I take the winter wheels off.

billyk 12-14-2014 11:23 AM

Hey Gravitylover,
I've got about 700 miles on them now, and it's great to hear that my HP's would be marketable. It's possible that I would pull the trigger soon, and there's a chance I'd hold on to the tires to try to get some use out of them.

Thanks for the offer and I'll stay in touch.

The continentals so far have a better turn in and the car feels more planted on turns and on the highway. No rubbing or anything on stock suspension too.

So, as you expected, the Conti's are much better than the HPs. Good to hear!

Do you have stock wheels? Wondering about your choice of tire size.

Whats that smell? 12-15-2014 09:01 PM

Yeah I was really impressed with the tread. And nope I bought xxr 527's because I'm a cheap ass plus they work. Size is 18x8.75 +35 with 235/40/18's. I didn't notice any rubbing at full lock and keep in mind the 40 sidewall will throw off the speedometer a bit.

Gravitylover:
Got an appointment for tomorrow to swap out my stock tires for All Seasons. I expect to put the HP's up for sale with about 1k miles on them. Still interested? If so, PM me.

billyk 12-24-2014 07:47 AM

Got Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's. Quite impressive. I need more time on them before I can offer a detailed review.

My Primacy HP's will be up for sale shortly on the Classified section. Perfect condition with 1k miles on them. I liked the HP's - definitely fun to drive and very fuel efficient. They just are not the practical choice for Maryland Winters.
