Squeak noise from engine.

Quick question: does anyone else with a MT hear a squeaking noise @ idle and probably up to 1500? It doesn't sound like its coming from the belts. Probably around the A/C lines/intake on the driver side. You can't really hear it when your driving and the radio is on so it doesn't really bother me. I was just wondering if anyone else has that on theirs. My friend said he doesn't hear anything on his AT.

rikdrt1 06-05-2012 07:29 PM

i havent noticed but i will pay attention to it this weekend...

Was your AC on? My WRX sometimes does a little chirp when the compressor kicks in.

I think I know what your talking about. Every now and then I'll hear a high pitched whistle like noise. Idk what it is tho.

It doesn't sound like a tick. More like a squeak. A/C was off. It does it regardless of A/C status.

Yeah, I think that's the same noise.

blu_ 06-05-2012 07:53 PM

Its the mice powering the motor. Mine also does it.

Lol Fueled by cheese.

What's up everybody! Just registered here. My Argento FR-S is my 4th Scion.

I actually came online tonight to research this exact sound... I heard it as I was idling in the garage when I pulled in a minute ago... I popped the hood and it definitely seems it's coming from the driver's side - when I first heard it, I thought it was a belt, but not now after taking a look...

Not to thread jack, BUUUUUUUUT: Anyone else have notice that when idling, the RPMs sometimes drop all the way down to about 500-550 and the engine sputters?

And finally, I've never had a Boxer engine before, and can't really tell what sounds are normal or not, which sends me into a pit of worry...

FakeWhiteMan 06-05-2012 10:54 PM

I know what the DI sound is and can tell the timing chain but I'm not familiar with the other noise. And yeah my car will idle at like 500 rpm after it's warmed up.

speed-wiz 06-05-2012 10:59 PM

Could this be the fuel pump for the direct injectors? :iono:

What do you mean by "DI sound"?

DOes yours also kind of sputter at 500 rpm? I was near a wall and so I could hear the engine quite well and it sounded like COMPLETE SH*T at 500 rpm...

She's only got 200 miles on her and I've been over 4000rpm MAYBE three times, varying speeds, no cruise, etc....

Direct injection. It's a ticking noise. And its seemingly not that happy being at 500rpm, when I touch the throttle it sounds like crap until it's back around 1k.

What, if anything, can be done about it idling down at 500?

I'm not sure. Idk if it is supposed to idle that low all the time or just under certain circumstances.

Snoopyalien24 06-05-2012 11:28 PM

It's the supercharger time-belt on the turbo

WolfsFang 06-06-2012 12:38 AM

my car did that nose tonight. I thought i broke something because i got the car sideways a little at only 250mi.

s1monn 06-06-2012 03:44 AM

Omg same here with my frs... i thought it could be the belt or some where around there cause the sound is much louder in that area hope this isn't anything major ><

NeedsmoreCowbell 06-06-2012 10:15 AM

I think its the fuel injectors. Mine does it in sub 1k rpms but once you give it gas it goes away. my Audi and VW are way louder on the ticking. The chirping I think is just low pressure.

Fish 06-06-2012 11:16 AM

Well, at least I know its not just me. Plus like I said, you can't really hear it once your driving anyway. I feel better now. lol

Scik 06-06-2012 11:36 AM

Well call me crazy, and don't get me wrong I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS CAR, but I'd rather my brand new car not be squeaking at stop lights...

ahausheer 06-06-2012 01:13 PM

If it did not do it during the test drive take it back to the dealer.

:word: Or that they swapped your engine with a diesel? LOL!

Vlad 06-08-2012 11:50 AM

Mine AT BRZ does it to. Squeak noise somewhere around ABS area. What is it????????

Pscylo 06-08-2012 11:58 AM

Mine does it after its idled down to 550ish rpms, and then whenever idle after that. Not heard while driving, until I go through a drive through or stop and am sitting still.

This is my exact experience with the "squeak"

Re~Mix 06-08-2012 01:37 PM

I've heard this as well. However I would almost describe it more as a "wheezing" or like a sick person breathing haha.

I think i diagnosed it to only be present when the AC is on. At this stage paranoia has set in and I could probably invent noises in my head.

MVJ1975 06-08-2012 01:58 PM

I haven't heard any squeakiness, but that could just be that I'm always blasting electropop when I'm driving.

mattles 06-08-2012 02:02 PM

At idle my car used to sound like a very large cricket that was OD-ed on meth-- but all that rapid, high pitched squeaking and chirping went away went I changed my oil... very weird because I was SURE it was the damn serp belt tensioner because I could see it vibrating around in time with the chirping/squeaking. Could just be now that its broken in (I broke it in more or less exactly as the manual told me to) its settling down?

ubersoph 06-08-2012 02:27 PM

I noticed this too, I'm guessing it's normal but I'll keep an eye out and see what you guys find

ej 06-10-2012 01:51 AM

Does anyone hear it when turning the car off??

Yep, it's almost like a flutter. I'm thinking it's the high pressure fuel rail.

ej 06-10-2012 04:09 PM

Ok I was getting a little concerned

frslee 04-18-2013 12:13 PM

Recently I've been hearing the single "squeak" noise in every 4-5 minutes while I'm driving.
Even when I'm cruising on highway, I frequently hear "squeak" from engine. I read that it could be A/C tensioner or something.

kioton32 04-18-2013 01:28 PM

It's the DI high pressure fuel pump on the back of the engine... I just had mine replaced yesterday... Some people call it chirping or cricket sounding... There is a TSB out on it...

Is it more like a short "ting" than a long "squeak"? Does it happen only when the A/C compressor turns on? If it is, then I hear it too, but mine is every 15 seconds or so. Yours might be different since it's every 4-5 minutes. Here's a thread about it.

Thanks for the post. I did read some other threads about other sound, but this thread explains all.

xUhMeyziing 04-22-2013 01:31 AM

i took mine to a dealer over the squeaking noise and they said its my fuel pump. they are replacing it tomorrow....ive heard that japan's gas is better grade than what we have in the US and the fuel is not lubricating the fuel pump and it causes it to squeak.

Not to be a downer but it'll be back in a few hundred miles.
