Anyone heard any loud popping?
I've read a few folks having an issue where they hear engine ticks, or interior rattles...
On three different occasions I've had a loud "POP" or "BANG" as if something has hit underneath or near the passenger side door. At first it was on the same road in the same area; however, this morning it did it when backing out of my drive. (And no, I'm not hitting anything or being hit, no road debris, etc.) There also nothing visual as to what is causing this... Anyone else heard this mystery noise? I'd imagine it could just be the chassis of a new car getting settled or perhaps something with the suspension settling... Didn't know if this was normal and I believe my last car had a similar "POP" a few times. If it wasn't so loud I'd probably not care to post... Thanks for any feedback! |
I have but thought it was just road debris. I'll have to pay more attention.
My drivers side door handle is a little loose also but I haven't bothered to look into it yet.. by a little loose I mean you have to grab it and try to make it move, it doesn't rattle. |
Sounds like you've had it too then... Debris was my original thought as well when I first heard it. Then it happened in the same spot with a clear road so I knew it was the car that was doing it. Still didn't think too much of it till it did it this morning. The handles all seem to be secure on mine so I'm thinking that is unrelated. Also for any of those wondering what we've heard, it was loud enough the first time to make me think I'd got a good sized ding on my new car!

I've heard it once or twice, usually when the car is cold. Almost sounds like a small detonation.
|
Also, let me add that I've heard this noise when the car's chassis would have a "flexing" stress placed upon it. Such as when I come out of my drive, the car would have a twisting type of motion. The road where I've heard it is in a sweeping/slightly banked & sharp S turn where the car would have a similar flex stresses.

Guys don't sweat it, it could be catalytic converter heat shields. This car got two of them, and they do get hot, expanding and contacting under different circumstances.

I may have heard this as well. There were a couple times I thought I had hit something that I didn't remember seeing on the road ahead of me.
|
It really does sound like large debris smacking the crap out of the underside on passenger side or the door of the car... The exhaust appears to run somewhat on that side but the sounds appears to be coming more in the door area.

I still need to throw mine up on the lift, maybe friday night I'll do that and inspect it and see if I notice anything odd, impact marks, etc.
|
Cool, let me know what you find if anything! I'd appreciate it!
|
the closest thing i could find in the manual was
"Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction." page 14 of the manual although it sounds like its happening to you guys while the vehicle is in motion. |
Its def not a fan or typical sound... In Batman terms it is "Bang!" "Bam!" "Pop!" "Cherbang!" etc... :) It is loud enough to make you ask WTF just happened!?
|
I've had the same "pop" sound on the passenger side while driving on the highway. I didn't hit debris or anything. Only heard it once though
|
I remember a similar sound when the s197 (2005-up) Mustangs first came out. It was under similar conditions, and the problem turned out to be upper strut mount related.
|
I think I've heard it myself as well but only when I'm on idle. Probably need to observe the next time I go for a drive since I always crank up the volume of my stereo

come to think if it, I DID hear this sound while I was making a run through the country I thought I had clipped some gravel but I realize now it was just one loud *TINK*. It came from the passenger rear.
|
Hmmm... I should probably turn my music down so I can hear some of this stuff ;)
|
Today I heard this sound for the first time. It sounded like a rock or something hit my passenger side door. I wonder what this could be.
|
Didn't have the sound this morning in the two places where my car seems to experience it. That being said, it doesn't happen every day.
|
I've heard it a few times myself, but not recently.
|
How long have you had the car and how many times have you heard it? Thursday afternoon will be the 1 week mark for me and I've heard it three times that I can think of.
|
lol, I heard it too, thought I ran over a bottle but look in mirror didn't see anything. Just once so far, got 200 miles on car

So did OP figure what it was yet?

Had something similar in another car, could be the swaybar moving and something like endlinks or bushing bracket needed to be tightened.

It's the suspension settling. With a multi-link, the rear strut and spring are separate and there is some jostling during transit. I've had it happen under quick compression situations only, but I think I can count the number of times on one hand. Another potential explanation could be the springs compressing and the metal hitting. I haven't been under the car to see if there any spring isolators on there.

Pulling out of the dealers lot in my FR-S I heard it when I ran over a small pothole. I was doing like 10 MPH. Haven't heard it since then. I've only put like 60 miles on it though.
|
Yeah i heard the cowbell sounding bang too during my test drive. Got me a little worried, but I knew I didn't run over any bottle or anything, so I assumed it was just metal on metal reaction to being used for the first/second time.

I have a theory... And we're all going to laugh if this is correct... I heard a similar noise with my wife yesterday afternoon while we were leaving our neighborhood. It appears that the passengerseat isn't always fully locking/locked after I get/put my daughter in her backseat booster. My wife said it was her seat that appeared to have clicked into place.
If this is true then in most cases I'd believe it is the same thing happening to others on here. Have you or had you accessed your backseat recently before hearing the clang? It makes sense that this could be it as the seats are mounted so close to the floor that it would cause the sensation we're getting... |
