Jalopnik becoming worse?

Anybody else think this page is getting worse? It used to be awesome but now I feel as if they're trying to commercialize a lot more and post less relevant articles. They're starting to post a lot more non-automotive articles as well. Kind of a shame.

But where else would I look for $1 shave clubs and 20% off for underwear?

Jyn 12-07-2014 01:11 AM

I blame Gawker and Jezebel. Even Gizmodo's suffered the past year or so.

Dimman 12-07-2014 02:51 AM

It's a content farm.

Algorithm tells them what's hot, they twist something barely car-related to match what the algorithm tells them.

swarb 12-07-2014 03:02 AM

I just go to autoblog now. I noticed that jalopnik would put the same stuff up after autoblog did. Usually a day or two after. And it happens regularly.

swarb 12-07-2014 03:04 AM

Gawker's been clickbait for 5+ years now, not a huge shift recently imo.

I do like some of their writers when they write useful things: Doug Demuro is pretty reliable, Torch and Orlove get at least one article worth reading a week and when Chris Harris isn't writing about shit or press life he's got a great perspective on cars (disagree with his priorities though, he's gunning to take Clarkson's place at times, kinda lame).

Edit: High praise for Tavarish too, his articles about flipping cars are great, living the life.

Definitely noticed this... disappointing cus I just started reading it a year or 2 ago. Still have some good stuff here and there I guess but mostly meh

Freddy, AKA Tavarish, has been nothing but a prick when i have talked to him. he is completely different than his articles lead to believe. douche canoe floating down the toolbelt river.

They are a tech site, it's their job to constantly cover Apple, (the biggest tech company in the world.)

If you want to read a site that pretends that Apple or the iPhone is irrelevant, I suggest android blogs 😄

Its not the fact that they constantly cover them its their biased review towards them

Clickbait sells, this is how they make money and are able to live as writers.

Sure, they sometimes post some pointless crap, but they always have the interesting articles that i never thought I'd give a shit about it. It can get really nerdy and interesting. http://jalopnik.com/was-this-gm-mini...ive-1665847028

Oppo is a little bit weird, i see a lot of self confessing real life posts on there. Lots of teens trying to get advice on girls. I always say the same shit, fuck bitches and leave. I tend to go in with a sword and shield when going onto Oppo.

Edit: For example, there's 14ish automotive content on the first page out of 6 non relative articles. 3 or 4 of those non relative articles are aviation type, so it tends to get shoved with the car stuff.

rs999 12-07-2014 10:20 AM

Blame Gawker media and not Jalopnik. The content algorithm mixes in articles from Jezebel and Gawker messing up the Jalopnik feed.

But I still love Jalopnik compared to AutoBlog.

post_break 12-07-2014 11:14 AM

Jalopnik has always been a part of Gawker. Saying it's Gawker's fault is like saying the rum is ruining a rum and coke.

Ah, I only click on his car flipping articles where he's actually doing work, browsed through his feed and there are a lot of articles I would never bother with.

I've found most car guys are some level of jerk (myself definitely included), after all most of us spend an unhealthy amount of time obsessing over a material possession, no reason to have poor interactions with consumers of your content though, reap what you sow.

he is part of a small private car club group here in the NW that deals through Facebook. His true colors shine there. I understand most will never get to see that side. It was the last straw for me supporting Jalopnik.

For those that want some high quality media on cars i HIGHLY recommend checking out everyday driver. Their dealings are in videos, not articles, but they are top notch in their work and have great opinions when it comes to cars.

also if you need more reading material, might as well learn the meat and potatos of going fast over at Motoiq
http://www.motoiq.com/
and of course there is ALWAYS the standard, Speedhunters site that has car porn unlike any other.

Sideways&Smiling 12-07-2014 05:21 PM

One of my favorite Jalop (although Oppo Lock) articles ever:

Andrew025 12-07-2014 05:46 PM

I must be the only one that thinks oppo is pretty annoying most of the time.

DAEMANO 12-07-2014 08:15 PM

Jalopnik has been on the decline ever since they started over posting LeMons. The event is great, but I could really see how little other content they had when the site became all LeMons all the the time. Gawker sux.

daiheadjai 12-07-2014 09:50 PM

I dunno - I do enjoy the Foxtrot Alpha articles on military aviation, etc.
I kinda wish they covered more cars that normal people could own and enjoy - I dunno, it's nice to read about the new La Ferrari, or the 918 or the latest McLaren... But it's not something most of us will ever be able to experience.

I suppose that's not their fault - it's not like automakers are helping the cause (whatever happened to the IDx, GT4 Stinger, and all those new cars automakers were promising to try and steal the Twins' tofu?)

Nissan is being a ***** about the IDx :(

Hopefully they come up with something better...... like a fresh S16 or a small Z that's actually reminiscent of the 280z.

Wise 12-08-2014 01:09 AM

Whilst I agree that Jalopnik used to be better a few years ago, I still like to read their articles on the morning train commute.

They had an article last week on the 10 biggest car rumors that are never coming true.

One was the Turbo'd BRZ/GT86 lol.

White&Nerdy 12-08-2014 12:18 PM

I've started writing some stuff on Oppo (like actual articles, not rants and whining and stuff), and so far it's gotten some decent recommendations. Nothing on the front page yet, but hopefully someday. I'm definitely focusing on writing about everyday cars, including my BRZ. Stay tuned. :)
