Another Android Head Unit

2 Attachment(s)
Just got this in the mail from Hong Kong today. Not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited. Below info is copied from another forum created by someone who has installed and tested the unit though his was one model lower and had 1gig of memory and 4x25 output. Do a google search for "Newsmy Carpad NU3001" and you'll find the post. There is a wiki hosted on that forum as well. Lots of info there. Kudos goes to that person for all this awesome info. I take no responsibility nor credit for what you see below.

I'll hopefully have all this installed within the next week. I'll update the post after with info on functionality, ease of install, etc. If it's the beast I think it will be and there is enough interest in getting these, I will likely make a big order and offload them cheaper than what I got mine for.

Here is a quick demo.
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8NvS6hd35M"]Newsmy чистый Android 4.4.2 CarPAD 2S - YouTube[/ame]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WHAT IS IT: The Newsmy Carpad NU3001 is a dual-DIN Android head unit that runs KitKat 4.4.2, has a 7-inch screen, and no physical controls. It's nice-looking, very well made, and comes rooted out of the box. The manufacturer seems to be quite responsive to bug reports and feature requests, releasing frequent ROM and MCU updates to fix problems and usability issues. Oh, and we have full source code.
MAJOR FEATURES: •Quad-core 1.6GHz Rockchip RK3188 CPU and 2GB RAM
•FM radio (RDS currently not working, awaiting a software update)
•8GB Flash
•Android Box that contains CPU and most of the Android guts connected via cable that can be unplugged and removed from the car
•Built-in Wifi
•1024x600 Capacitive Screen
•Dual Bluetooth: one is standard Android BT for use with ODB etc. The second is hard-wired to the phone app and only works for phone calls and streaming music.
•Pure Android, no rooting
•4x50W amplifier
BASIC Q&A:
Is it any good? Yes, it seems to be stable and work as expected
Does it work with Torque? Yes.
Does it work with my SWC? Supposedly, nobody has tried it yet. There is both CAN bus and resistive connections.
Can I talk on the phone and use Torque at the same time? Yes.
Can it be rooted? It comes rooted out of the box.
What ports does it have? USB Host, USB OTG, little bitty HDMI for when you take the Android Box out of your car and hook it to a TV
What connections does it have for my car? 4 channel high-power speakers, FM antenna, 1 set of line outs, 1 set of line ins, 3 composite video ins, CAN bus low and high (confusingly labeled + and -) and the usual complement of battery, acc, ground, dash lights, reverse switch, etc.
Does it run ....? Yes, think of it as a 7-inch tablet with built-in amp and radio that looks great in your dash.
AliExpress? Yes. It's like the Chinese eBay. Buying from them is not complicated. Summer, the girl who handles orders, is responsive and helpful.
Not a bad looking unit, but lack of physical controls is a dealbreaker for me. I love me some knobs.
Still, this looks pretty good.
tahdizzle 12-04-2014 05:10 PM
So with this head unit, you can still use the external mic that is in the car?
I'm thinking the stock line to the mic needs to be converted to 3.5mm headphone jack. I'll know for sure this weekend... I'll let you know!
looks interesting. keep us updated.
Looks like the folks on XDA are still trying to figure out how to get an external mic hook up working. As it stands, it only works with the mic on your phone when connected to bluetooth. Alternatively, you can plug in a USB mic and use that.
kmbkk 12-05-2014 12:26 PM
I'm definitely interested as well. I'm considering switching to Android from iPhone and this could be a nice head unit.
So I just got this head unit! So stoked. What kind of issues did you run into? what fit kit did you use etc? how was the fitment?
Foobar 12-29-2014 01:10 PM
Those of you who bought this unit, let's hear some reviews and feedback. How is it?
Cockatoo 12-29-2014 01:34 PM
Yeah come one guys who have bought it, shed some light! Dash Kit used, USB Extender, etc. @Ruckus @Starscream15
This looks like a better alternative to the Ca-Fi system currently.... if people don't care about physical buttons.
i havent even attempted to install it yet... ill look into it this weekend.
Cockatoo 12-31-2014 09:40 PM
Well I just bought it as well... Couldn't wait. Should have it in a week or so.
Ruckus 01-04-2015 09:10 PM
So I looked into what it will take to install this and already ran into a problem. There is about a 1/4 inch gap on either side of the radio. I went out on a limb and ordered..http://m.ebay.com/itm/SCION-FR-S-CAR...-/360610207049
More to come.
Cockatoo 01-04-2015 09:40 PM
Yep yep... I got the beatsonic dash kit. Will probably custom wrap it at some point so it looks better. You also want to get the antenna adapter and also usb adapter if you'd like use of that. I also got a slim Bluetooth odb so I can run Torque
kmbkk 01-04-2015 11:02 PM
I made the switch to an android phone, so this head unit mag be near the top for future upgrade depending on how it sounds. In for updates!
I like the way that kit looks better!
Do you have part numbers or anything for the exact adaptors needed as far as the antenna and USB are concerned?
Keep me posted on the wiring! I'm failing to see how I'm going to run this thing to an amp in the future. Looks like it might take some tinkering. I'll have to wait for the fit kit to show up.
My unit is actually arriving today... but I wont have all the other stuff until later in the week. I'll keep updating as I get things in order.
Cockatoo 01-05-2015 07:56 PM
Got my head unit in today! Shipped Saturday from China and got it tonight, not bad!
Damn!
Ruckus 01-07-2015 01:13 PM
Went ahead and purchased those adaptors plus the blue tooth odb2. Thanks! Not gonna lie... pretty stoked about that blue tooth odb2 deal with torque. Very sexy.
Awesome! I'll have all the parts by Friday so Ill definitely be jumping on it as soon as I can... Last night I setup a test-bench and hooked it up to a spare ups battery, works like a charm... tested bluetooth, gps, wifi, and even tested my yet to be installed Rydeen backup camera.
Looks great!
Foobar 01-10-2015 10:58 PM
How long is boot up? Does it have a standby mode for quick boot?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Cockatoo 01-10-2015 11:13 PM
It has a standby time of 2 hours... Cold boot time is 15 to 20 seconds. Not too bad... Hopefully in the future firmware tweaks can be made to lengthen the standby time because the draw is not that much
Cockatoo 01-10-2015 11:56 PM
Mini review
Fit and Finish: Unit arrived in perfect shape from China. Quality seems very good especially for the price. I don't think the features can be beat for the price particularly if you want to be running Android.
Install: Straight forward, just like installing any other aftermarket unit. Had a little trouble with Beatsonic kit mounting straight but was fine once unit was fully installed.
Performance: definitely one of the better performing Android units I've experienced, gpu could be a little better, but not necessary. Touch screen is responsive and operates as expected. Side capacitive buttons work great.
Sound: great! waaay better than the OEM unit, the OEM unit has too much sound processing and distorts relatively easy. Granted I'm using aftermarket amp /speakers. Actually FM radio for some reason sounds way better... less noise and better perceived sound quality.
Connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, OEM USB, and Rydeen Duo backup camera all work great and as expected. The unit has several RCA connections for audio in and video in.
I would highly recommend this unit for anyone looking for the Android experience or really just a better experience than alot of aftermarket units can deliver at this time. This unit hit all the points I was looking for and I don't mind not having any physical buttons.
Did your fit kit come the coaxial jacks to run wires to your amp? Or did you have to hook up a hi-low converter?
What? The head unit comes with one set of RCA pre outs to hook up an amp.
15 seconds is about the same as stock, no? That's not too bad. But 2 hours is pretty short for standby. 2 days would be ideal.
What's the deal with that box that you can take out of the HU, how's that work?
I think this has potential, but needs a lot of kinks worked out first.
I read about the inability to have audio coming from multiple apps - that would be a huge downside for me as I would need navigation as well as music streaming to work simultaneously. I'm hopeful the devs can address that and some of the other issues listed on XDA.
The box is the actual android unit. It's pretty cool. With it being separate like that it's easier to hook up to a pc and update. Plus there is a hdmi out on it in case you ever wanted to hook it up to a tv. Which could be useful if you do a lot of traveling.
I just installed the head unit and the sound quality is leaps and bounds above stock!
How do you control the box when it's plugged into HDMI? What's the input mechanism?
Yea I was wondering if that is what we are supposed to use. I need at least two channels so I went ahead and purchased the Audio control lc7i for future expandability. I'll try and put it in the stock amp location. Did you have a few connectors that didn't get hooked up from the stock stereo? Any idea wtf they are? I had 2. I fairly large connector that was plugged into the drivers side of the stereo and a little square one which I'm assuming is the stock mic.
My 4 channel amp has built in stereo mode that only needs one set of RCAs and copies it to the other 2 channels.
The larger connector (28 pin) I believe is for GPS, etc. The smaller one I think you are referring to is the 3.5mm input by the USB.
I have the same headunit in my BRZ. So far everything works fine. But i have a problrm with the illumination of the keys on the left side. Has anyone the same problem? Is there a special wire that i have to connect? I see that there is a orange wire named "illu". Do i have to connect this? And where?
Yes, there is a corresponding wire on the OEM side.
