NORCAL Board Game Thread

Hi all. Just wanted to start this thread to share/discuss anything board or table top game related.

Dennis and I got together a few nights ago with a friend of mine and we tried a few different games. All super fun. Time went by super fast and before we knew it, it was 1 in the morning.

Anyways, use this thread to discuss games, arrange gatherings, or maybe loan/borrow games!

Dennis, my friend, and I gave Trains a try this past weekend. More information about the game can be found here:

In brief, the game revolves around creating a train network monopoly in Japan. The game is kind of a cross between Dominion and Ticket to Ride. There's two parts to the game. Each player has a "deck" which allows them to generate income or perform certain actions. The players can add to the deck by using the currency that is generated each turn from the deck they draw from. From there, players lay down tracks, build stations, etc., in order the monopolizing the board. As players lay down tracks and stations, they gain victory points. Players with the most victory points at the end wins.

My thoughts on the game: I love it. The game play was interesting. The game integrated two parts (deck building and game board) of very well. I thought the game to be more toward the complex side. It may be a little difficult to pick up, and the game tends to play a little long, but otherwise very enjoyable. I think this game would be most appreciated by someone who enjoys deeper games or someone who likes to formulate and execute strategies.

I'll let Dennis chime in and have him share his thoughts.

Game is good with 3-4 players. It's kinda like monopoly it a sense that you have to build your company and adapt to the competition. It also has a card playing aspect as well where you have to manage your deck of cards. You can also build your deck during gameplay to suit your playing style.

Saturday and Sunday is Pandemic Party. Pandemic is a cooperative game where the players work as a team against the game to cure diseases. Cooperative games, in my opinion, are really interesting. The game gets exponentially harder as you add more players. More information about the game can be found here:

Pandemic Party is a awareness and fundraising event for Doctors Without Borders. More information can be found here:

I'll be attending the local event at Game Kastle in Santa Clara (right by SJ Mineta). If anyone would be interested in joining me, please let me know. It's a great game if you've never tried it before. Experience with the game does help, but since you are working as a team and playing against the game, this is a great game for ALL skill levels. I'll be heading over to Game Kastle after the Toy Drive at SpeedElement.

Would anyone be interested in getting together for a few board games on Sunday afternoon? Got a bunch of games I can share and I am open to playing others if anyone has something they would like to share.

I am thinking about picking up Flashpoint Fire Rescue. Has anyone played this before? Thoughts? It is a co-op game where the players play against the game.

nyrip 02-10-2015 11:25 PM

I'd be down for any board game. We just need to stop talking about it and hash out a date and time. If somebody has a game I'm willing to make the date and time.

Would anyone be interested in helping me test my cube? I built a new MTG cube from the ground up and would like a few people to help me filter cards and balance colors.

It's more of a role playing, adventure game.

Each player controls a guild of 3 heros and the guild goes around the board accomplishing player vs player and player vs environment tasks. Completing tasks and killing enemies will generate currency which allows you to buy upgrades for the next scenario.

The game is broken up into 6 scenarios. 3 scenarios on the outside ring, 2 scenarios on the inside ring, and the final scenario. Each scenario typically takes hour and hour and half, though the more difficult scenarios can take longer. This is a great game if you are looking for something a little longer. The game play isn't difficult. Game is very simple and straightforward.

Combat is handle by rolling dice. When players attack other players or enemies, they roll attack dice and defender rolls defense dice to determine damage. Mechanics and equipment in game allows you to manipulate how many dice you can roll.

I really do like the game. It isn't as deep or strategic as some of the other games, but I like that the game give a sense of adventure. We are probably into the game about 10-12 hours and my friends seem to really enjoy it. They tend to be a little picky about games. We try to do 1 or 2 scenarios a weekend. This game is definitely meant to be played over several days.

Let me know if you have any questions!

FT-86FeverXD 10-01-2015 07:48 PM

Thank you for your explanation. I do like adventure game style. Maybe I will try it out next time.

We started playing Pandemic Legacy recently. For those who are looking for something a little longer, check this one out. This game is meant to be played over a bunch of nights.

If you are unfamiliar with original Pandemic, it is a cooperative board game where you and your friends play against the game to find cures to diseases. The base game is a great gateway game and you win or lose as a team.

Pandemic Legacy takes the game to a whole new level. Pandemic Legacy is played over 12 "months." If you lose one month, you have the option to replay the month once. Each month is a game. As the months progress, the your copy of Pandemic Legacy evolves. New rules may be added. Characters may get new special abilities. Or the board may permanently change.

It is a little pricey, but definitely worth the $70 as the game offers between 12 and 24 games.
