Best Mods for the BRZ

What is everyone doing to Trick out their BRZ?? Need some tips and info and what is working best and where can I get the parts.

The car is too new to know. Get a nice set of rims or buy your way into a few HPDEs and wait like the rest of us.

There is no "best" ; only that which you want to do.

Archer1.8 06-05-2012 06:07 AM

Go to a Drivers Racing School. The best mods are the Driver Mods

Coils.
Wheels.

Slammed.

Besides increasing driver skill,

I would say this car has an excellent chasis that can handle much more power than stock. Increasing hp by another 20-30 hp at the wheels should put this car in a sweet spot IMO.

E/H/I.

I was checking out the Axle Back Exhaust from nameless performance, and it sounds good but I can't find if it adds any power or adds more weight..I really like the lightweight aspect of the BRZ, I will be getting mine in November so I still have awhile. Rims could be better..spoiler could be better. Anyone adding a spoiler or are you guys staying stock? As far as what I want to do, I just want to give it some HP increase but not add much weight. Seems everyone is ok with the stock suspensions, so no need to change there. Hopefully try and grab an intake, and headers. Sucks waiting for them to develop all this.:respekt:

The funnest thing about this car (aside from driving it of course) will be deciding how to "enhance" it! I like the fact that Toyota has taken a more bare bones, blank canvas approach to the 86! Since Toyota isn't going to do a performance version of the FR-S, I plan on doing it myself. I'll start with a NA build to create a variant model. (Think Type-R) complete with unique badges!! May stop there to maintain the purity of the car.

Good bit of guidance: if you're remotely interested in autocrossing, go ahead and look at what the different classes (stock, stock prepared, street touring) allow, and plan accordingly. It's always disheartening to go to your first autocross only to find out that something simple like cams gives you the same PAX adjustment as a fully prepared car.

stevo_12v 06-05-2012 12:57 PM

I think if your a fatty(like a BMI of 26 and above), you should be going on a diet. That would be the cheapest and best mod. Increase the power-to-weight ratio.

Turbowned 06-05-2012 01:13 PM

The best modification you can do right now is to the driver. Go to as many driving events as you can and become a better driver, and completely familiar with the characteristics of the car. Then you can decide what adjustments need to be made to the car.

Good point, just wish I had more time..Life in the Culinary business is nuts. Down here in Texas I know of a few good events. Gotta better myself as a driver for sure..no argument there..Specially with a car as new as this.

TheShiftingChef 06-05-2012 02:35 PM

I am just trying to get ahead before my car gets here because I know you guys are already testing things out while I wait for mine to even be delivered. Us FR-S and BRZ drivers gotta stick together.:respekt:

the axleback drops 8 pounds, the axleback delete drops 22 pounds, the catted downpipe drops 5 or so, non-catted drops 7.

axleback makes like 3 whp, downpipe makes another few whp, but we'll really see what it does once it's tuned- the ECU is definitely pulling the power back down.

I used to think that way as well.
After having participated in nearly the full spectrum of car mod philosophies though, I can honestly say the best mods are whatever you want to do. Obviously it depends on your goal.

Want to become a better driver? HPDE.
Want to road race? Unless you are rich I wouldn't race this car.
Compete in autocross? Go do it.
Want to have a faster car in a straight line? More power, less weight, more traction.
Want to have a faster car on curved roads? HPDE, weight, suspension, power, response... btw, what are you doing driving that fast on public roads? ;)
Want to have a fun car? Do whatever you think will be fun. For me that will probably start with a catback exhaust, because I like to hear the sound. Maybe that sounds corny and I'm just getting old.

I have a feeling the OP was asking about power and/or acceleration mods though.

Guess I am going to wait this one out untill more options come out. Cool to see what everyone else is doing...Wish I was rich!!HAHAHA!! Thanks for the help everyone.

Archer1.8 06-06-2012 08:49 AM

Other than Drivers mod. I own a Subaru Legacy GT, and the 2010+ LGT has a 16mm rear swaybar that is identical as the wrx/sti/brz/frs setup. I do not own one of these cars yet so I am not sure how much oversteer you would want to induce with a bigger bar, but on Legacy GT.com guys are selling their OEM 16mm RSB for around $25-$50. Might be a really cheap ieda

Turbowned 06-06-2012 12:19 PM

I'm waiting for the aftermarket to catch up and offer different options for each modification. I don't want to just buy the first exhaust, sway bar, coilover set, etc. that comes out. Also, when there are more competing products, it should hopefully drive prices down a little ;) Not to mention, no one's really cracked the ECU yet. I want to see what different engine mods gain with tuning, rather than looking at their dyno claims on a stock ECU.

If I had to choose between spending $1500 on a car mod and spending it on driving classes, I would choose the classes every time.

Funny, I didn't think the title of this thread was "Should I buy mods, or drivers classes".

2forme 09-07-2012 01:49 PM

I'd say the best mod for the money right now is a tune from @Visconti. It gives you a bit more power and MPG (so it essentially pays for itself!). After that I'd say an exhaust. Intakes are a still a bit iffy... I'd wait for more options.

Oh, yea, and the driver. Makes no sense to get more power if you don't know how to handle the car to begin with.

genometuning 09-07-2012 02:00 PM

There are a few parts already shipping out right now for the BRZ/FRS. Lowering springs, intakes, sway bars, exhausts it just depends on what you want to do. Hope this helps!

True enough, I was simply agreeing with the suggestion since it's a common thing. Many people mod their cars for more power and aren't properly educated on how to use the extra power. :)

rusty959 09-07-2012 03:23 PM

keep in mind this is an old thread. A lot has changed since the beginning of june. The visconti tune/turbo etc weren't out then.
Thus I vote we let this thread die.

drops 8 lbs, adds 3whp.

axleback/downpipe combo does 12whp, from nameless. dyno proved.

I hope to get the Nameless axleback downpipe exhaust. How is the noise level compared to stock noise levels? Yours is without the Helmholtz res? Thanks.

mine has helmholtz. I think the downpipe/axleback combo is really great- more aggressive sound, no droning, I love it. When I added the header, it drones a bit though, but adds another gob of power (I baselined at 159 and I'm at 179 now peak, and +25 at the top end of the power band).

Build quality and fitment is A+, couldn't be better. I'd prefer slightly quieter WITH header, but I prefer extremely quiet exhausts.

RazBRZ 09-08-2012 11:01 PM

1. This or something similar. Crawford apparently found oil in the motor they tore down after around 1K miles. The BRZ version isn't out yet
2. Better tires that aren't so loud and squealy. Road & Track tested Stock vs Dunlop Dirreza Z1 Star specs and they dropped 2.5 sec off of their lap time.
