Nice to see another Aussie company taking interest in developing this car.

SubiePig 11-12-2014 05:27 PM

So much awesome. Crazy how much has come out for this platform so quickly at that level. $20k out the door though.

Sleepless 11-14-2014 12:10 PM

I'm guessing it is very loud too...

cdrazic93 11-14-2014 01:47 PM

i really dont see an application for the everyday 86'er. Expensive, the auto is definitely stronger than the manual, and as to my knowledge; no one has broken an auto yet.

All things considered; this is cool as shit. I saw a WTA 1000hp Evo 9 set a lap record with a fat BW turbo and a holinger trans.

Lol. That's badass, but true. That's gotta be expensive.

Yeah 20K and generally aren't meant for many miles before a rebuild. Quaife has a helical one apparently.

Ok, I'm going to thread jack because I could find any decent threads on it, but has anyone made a dog box gear set for our cars yet?

On their Facebook they say that it will be significantly less than $20k USD. Still, not the kind of thing you'd be investing in unless you wanted to compete in mid to high level motorsport.

Actual post: " As per our original post please contact your nearest agent for pricing. I can assure you the price is much lower than 20k USD but this will vary depending on the current exchange rate and local fees involved."

M23 11-18-2014 03:14 AM

Perfect! Just what I need for my intended uses - street drifting, street drag racing, canyon racing and occasional import show off and other car shows :)

mike the snake 11-18-2014 06:29 AM

Sequential gearboxes are the things dreams are made of.

Straight cut gears??

themadscientist 11-28-2014 12:55 AM

1-6 straight cut. That thing will whine, but some of us love that sound. I can't see buying a $20,000 transmission for a $30,000 car, though.

Yeah agreed but it would be cheaper than spending $20k on a transmission then putting it in a $70,000 car.

themadscientist 11-28-2014 01:11 AM

Yeah, but the $70,000 car might actually need it. Think of what $20,000 spent under the hood and throughout the suspension and drivetrain of the BRZ would do for you. Sure the other guy has a nice sounding transmission, but you can't hear and neither can he because the roar of your actually powerful car would drown it out.
:burnrubber:

Captain Snooze 11-28-2014 03:00 AM

So what you are saying is you need to do $70,000 worth of mods to your BRZ/FRS/86 before you spend $20,000 on the gearbox?

themadscientist 11-28-2014 04:56 AM

No, I'd do $20,000 worth of suspension, brake, drive train and engine mods before I would waste it on that transmission, but, realistically, I wouldn't even do that much, maybe $5,000.

I would put that transmission in my GT-R if I folded bank like that, but right now it's all about getting it back on the road. :(

SnapOv3st3r 12-02-2014 10:15 PM

Try photography. Typical to put a $2000 dollar lens on an $800 camera.

I was quoted 17,500$ for their standard sequential and the 86 install kit before shipping. Good for 270 foot pounds of torque. The sg3 which can hold more I was quoted 20k.

D K 12-03-2014 12:37 PM

Ill gladly trade my 5DIII for a Holinger...

There have been two local auto trans blown that I know of. One at lower than 300 wtq and the other at a bit more than 300 wtq.

Do you have anymore details? Be curious to know if they had just lemons or the auto isnt being pushed nearly as hard as the manual

If its possible I wonder if an R154 swap would be cheaper than an auto with the full upgrades

mike the snake 12-03-2014 02:50 PM

I've been reading up on gearboxes and the R154 looks to me like a very good candidate as long as you're willing to live with 5 speeds.

For big power turbo applications it might even be better than 6 speeds. I haven't checked the gear spacing, but I know 6th on our OEM boxes is just an overdrive that I don't think would be used at most tracks.

I would get a rebuild on an R154 anyway, most rebuilders say the thrust washers are what most fail on since they're cast.
For $1600 the rebuild from jacks transmission looks to be a good working over. Total all in $3-3500 for a beefed up R154? Yes please.

http://www.jackstransmissions.com/pr...e-3-supra-r154

First- 3.251:1
Second- 1.955:1
Third- 1.310:1
Fourth- 1.000:1
Fifth- 0.753:1

Thats your spacing

R154s aren't really all that strong, honestly. A lot of people have broken even beefed up Marlin Crawler R154s.

Then whats an alternative that wont cost atleast half the price of the car?
That can also be subjecitve. Sure a 1200 hp big single big block would put a beefed up V160 in its place.

If there are reports of breaking sub 400wtq (which would be rare around here). Then its weak.

cdrazic93 12-03-2014 05:07 PM

The only things i can think of would be a T-56, 6060, or T-56 Magnum. Those are still >$4,000 just for the unit, not to mention the bell housing, install and crap.

It is what it is. People with S2000s, RX7s, Silvias/240sxs, etc. break transmissions at that power level (or less) too.

For most of these small, light cars, there are no cheap options. It's either Getrag V160/161, Tremec Magnum (which I haven't really seen being used with small displacement, high reving engines, but is the cheapest and probably the strongest option), or $$$$$$ aftermarket GForce/Quaife/Holinger/Hewland/etc. dogbox/sequential racing transmissions.

I know some 240sx SR20DET guys use 300zx transmissions or 350z/370z transmissions, but those have issues too...

This is one thing that has been making me think about going to an LS swap for my 240sx.... the price and availability of a strong, smooth shifting transmission in the Tremec Magnum...

cdrazic93 12-03-2014 05:38 PM

The only problem is, do the Tremec spin to 7500 reliably?

**** it, who wants an auto 3 speed that will support anything under a jet engine?

If I could afford a GTR I would build and boost AN S2000 or FRS to 700+ hp with this transmission instead.

DAT TIME ATTACK :P

mike the snake 12-03-2014 06:16 PM

Reading in the Supra forums, the R154 is said to be good for 700hp and 500-550 torque before problems occur, and this can be minimized by replacing a thrust washer. Beyond this and they recommend the 160/161.

Our little flat fours are not torque monsters. I bet the R154 would be pretty indestructable hooked up to one of our 86's.

Realistically, the FA20, even in big-power form, won't be hitting those numbers, for the most part. Those that go really crazy already have the cheddar to go for the 160 trans and 8.8 diff.

Reaper 12-03-2014 10:21 PM

So I've posted this in 4 transmission threads already but here goes

V160 swap 8-10k $ (6k transmission and 2+ for swap kit) for a transmission that isn't even made anymore!

Holinger/quaife 18-20k (I got actual quotes) $ to hold 270wtq unless you upgrade to the sg3 transmission for more $

Tremec tko(the magnum won't fit) 5.5k $ but it won't shift at high rpm. Liberty gear says they can fix that but it's a pretty big design limitation. It's also a 5 speed.

I've tried cryo and heat treatment and broke that too. The factory gears are as strong as they can be for their size.

If we convert to dog engagement we save a little space and can make the gears slightly stronger but the two companies that are willing to do it want 5.5k $and 6.5k $ but it won't be much stronger and it's a pain to drive a dog box on the street.

Why does the Magnum not fit? I know it fits in 240s and RX7s.

JP 12-04-2014 04:11 AM

you wont break a stock R154 with an FA20. They're not a nice shifting box and will require massaging of the trans tunnel to fit.

a brand new R154 is ~8K, but can be had for a LOT less if you shop around. eg: http://www.jzx100.com/forum/topic/97...#axzz3KuNVDGrM

I'd personally try to make the RA63 from the IS250 fit, but that would probably also require massaging the tunnel, side by side with an 86 box here: http://www.turbofast.com.au/img/RA63-TL70_1.jpg
