Does anyone have a rattle coming from the center dash?

If I apply two fingers worth of pressure just above the center AC vents on the dash it stops.

Anyone else? Its pretty maddening on the freeway.

HotLavaMann 06-04-2012 01:19 PM

Not here (thankfully!)

Liquidsnake 06-04-2012 02:02 PM

Its crazy to have a rattle with 120 miles on the car. :(

It happens. I would take it in if it is driving you nuts. Most likely its just a wire or something.

Compared to all my other subies this thing is actually built like a tank :/

Jayp 06-04-2012 02:08 PM

I thought it was just me but I also started hearing rattling this morning as I accelerated. I'll try and pinpoint where it's really coming from if I can, later today.

If I apply pressure to my dash right above the vents pressing down from the wind sheild downward it stops.

Linseal 06-04-2012 02:45 PM

Dude, you are on a roll!

First the condensation, now the rattle! :happy0180:

Reading about little quirks like this is the reason why my ass is waiting!

If you're waiting for stuff like rattles to go away, you'll never get the car!

RiskyTrousers 06-04-2012 03:07 PM

Yeah, I have a rattle as well. I pin pointed it to the AC controls. If I stick my hand in the little cell phone cubby underneath the AC controls and apply upwards pressure the rattle goes away.

Annoying but not a big deal, thats why we have a warranty!

I also have a very slight front bumper fitment issue. Where the bumper meets the fender at the headlight on the drivers side the bumper sticks out slightly and forms a little "shelf".

Will have both of these looked at by the dealer during my first service.

IMO they probably mandated tighter tolerances on everything.

SUB-FT86 06-04-2012 06:22 PM

This is never a reason for me to not buy a car. My RSX rattles now and then but my car has bigger problems like a torqueless engine and FWD. Lol!

Symbiont 06-04-2012 06:32 PM

So far my BRZ is solid as a rock, and I even like the horn sound.

If anyone had doubts if this car was a Subaru or a Toyota, here's your answer.

Our Impreza WRX has rattles in the passenger door and somewhere in the dash and the center armrest wiggles around when you lean on it.

Not necessary! ;)

I've bought enough 1st year production cars, trucks and motorcycles to realize the pattern. :happy0180:

I'll let my girlfriend know you said so; it was her idea. :)

Lol @ this whole thread.

My impreza goes away on Thursday, it's four years and 84000 Km's old. When it's cold; down shifting to first is impossible even for about five seconds after being stopped, the drivers seat rattles at about 50 km/h, and the doors rattle with the music despite the rear speakers not being hooked up. When it warm the drivers seat squeaks when going over bumps and the passenger seat squeaks on ondulating roads. At all times; the little plastic pieces over the baby seat connections rattle, it burns oil and can be smelled inside the car, the drivers outside seat rail is rusty as are the quarter panels and the bottom of the spare tire well, the screws in the center arm rest fall out despite lock tight and proper torquing, the drivers side visor stopped staying up at 30000 kms, I've replaced the front pads and rotors twice due to run out and uneven pad wear, a wheel bearing had to be replaced at 3000 kms, and the engine has a knock.

This car was dealer maintained and every service was done early. The 98 neon that I had until I leased this car didn't have any of these types of problems until much later in its life and I BEAT the hell out of that car. As an idea of how much i beat on it, if I launched it between 5 and 6 thousand RPM, depending on track prep and temps, it would do 1.9 second 60 ft times on dot tires.

I love the suspension in the impreza, for it's place it the market it's very easy to control at the edge with just throttle inputs, which is the sole reason I picked it over the competition, but man I can't wait to get rid of it. I just hope my FRS won't be as bad.

negative!

knocking on wood!

Mine has a dash rattle that only appears sometimes under acceleration, from 5k rpms and up.

Weird thing is that it doesn't seem bump related and doesn't happen all the time...usually only at WOT, but even then not all the time.

Was thinking it might be the flywheel or I injectors or something, since it seems to be gear + load related and not strictly engine rpm related.

Don't think it's an engine thing because it sounds like more of a soft plastixky rattle than a mechanical, metallic one. :P

ultra 07-07-2012 03:32 PM

Gah. Dash rattle is still around. Tried pressing down on various areas - top of dash, centre cubby. Tried playing with the air vents to see if that'd do anything but nope. Rattle is still there.

Sounds like it's inside the dash somewhere so I guess I'll have them take a look at it on my 1000k service.

Not really a deal breaker but since it happens while accelerating it kind of spoils the enjoyment of the engine sound.

I'ma try to learn to ignore it in the meantime, continue to play with stuff inside the car, see how that works.

Other than that though, flawless!

Stressin 09-29-2012 08:33 PM

I have this noise I think. I press above the vents and it stops, kind of like a plastic scratching noise.

Dake 09-30-2012 11:09 AM

My wife's Yaris started rattling within the first couple of months of being brand new - as soon as the temperature started changing (I know, it's a Yaris but when I was researching the problem it was a common complaint in other Toyotas). It rattled where the dash meets the a-pillars. I had it back to Toyota a few times until I finally convinced them to put some felt at that joint and it fixed the problem.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rattle/scrape around the a/c vents (or most anywhere else) where the two different plastics meet is something similar. Something that may have been snug and quiet before while temps were warm will contract a bit when things cool off and allow for more movement.
