Short Passengers in the front?

Hi all,

So i'm looking at getting an FR-S (still debating on manual or auto). My question is, how is the front passenger seat with short people? My gf is 5ft even, and can't see over the dash when riding in my current 2011 Miata/MX-5. or, is there a way to raise that seat up?

Thanks!

My wife is 5' 2" and has never complained about seeing over the dash on the passenger side, or when driving it without the seat raised (I have the driver side up about two notches I think, not 100% sure since I set it in 2012 and never changed it).

Best way is to go try it though. Everyone's a little different when it comes to seat to eye measurements!

8R6 11-05-2014 01:12 PM

lucky for you (and her), our seats are height adjustable!

Delfiki 11-05-2014 01:15 PM

The passenger seat height is adjustable? I must have missed that. The MX-5's passenger seat is so low i think she feels like a toddler in the thing. lol...

AznBRZer 11-05-2014 01:26 PM

Pretty sure the passenger seat isn't height-adjustable.

Can confirm. Passenger seats are NOT height-adjustable.

oh. that sucks. oh well. luckily im always the driver :o

BRZ21 11-05-2014 01:43 PM

i remember someone asking about buying a right hand drive driver seat that has height adjustment on it and installing it as a passenger seat a while ago.
i'm sure nothing came of it though it would be a cool idea if money was no object

with that said, my girlfriend is 5' and has never complained. It is actually way easier for her to see in this car than my last (97 mustang)

I wonder if you would need the seat or just the right-hand side rails? I took a quick look, and it appears it is the rails that handle this. I could be wrong though.

One of the deciding factors between the FR-S and the second choice on my list (Camaro) was the seat height. (Yea, I know, no one can see out of a Camaro). When MomHawk sat in a Camaro, she literally could not see over the dash on either side. To add adjustable passenger seat meant purchasing an almost $10,000 "upgrade" to the interior.

Graco makes a booster seat that could help.

continuecrushing 11-05-2014 03:27 PM

put your gf in the frs and see if she can see.

Or get a taller gf.

Can she at least lean over into the driver seat? Thats the most important.

I was going to say let her drive.... but this is clearly the better answer.

So true!
When I test drove the Camaro and my wife asked how I liked it my response was " really cool except I felt like I was sitting in a bath tub. The really deep old kind with the feet".

djmm 11-05-2014 04:23 PM

My wife is short too bit she can see the front. 5' isn't that short, should be okay.
If not just get one of those seat cushion to boost the seat a bit.

I suggested that, which was followed by me discovering our couch was not as comfortable for sleeping as I thought it was.

That's a very good description...

My Wife is 5'2" and she says she has no problem seeing over the hood. Although she cannot she the fender humps from that low.

Either things have changed substantially or you are greatly exaggerating the price to get passenger height adjustment in the Camaro.

It's only $2,300 to move up to a trim level that gives you 6 way power adjusted passenger seat vs the standard 2 way manual adjustment.

Only $2300??

robr 11-06-2014 10:08 AM

My wife is 5'2" and says she can see fine. She says if she ever drove it, she'd probably take out the front bumper on a sidewalk when parking, but she does that anyway.

She does, however, think the seat is too low..which is odd since she never complained about my lowered Miata in the years I've had her and that car. Pregnant women just like to complain about that stuff I guess

It could have been just the dealer blowing smoke, but it in 2012 it required a move up in overall trim level (it was a convenience pack that had a lot of crap I didn't want, including leather seats) to get one that had a 6 way power seat. Even so, $2,300 would have been a deal killer for me since all I wanted was the seat at it was already at the top of my range.

Di 11-06-2014 11:36 AM

I'm 5' 2" and can see over the dash in the drivers seat without raising the seat. I can also see over the dash in the passenger side. Also, my sister is 4'11" and she didn't say anything about not being able to see when she rode in my FR-S. The seat belt is the biggest issue. It cuts your throat, but I bought one of those seat belt adjusters for adults and it works fine.

That's MomHawk's primary complaint about it as well.

Even if you run the belt through the shoulder loop on the seat?

The seat belt pads from Emdom might be useful for you then. I love mine :D

ProjectoGL 11-06-2014 01:01 PM

I believe the passenger seat is actually lower than the driver's seat. I have my driver seat to the lowest point...and when I sat in the passenger seat it felt much lower than my driver seat...

Probably the difference is the rails. The driver side most likely has the raise/lower mechanism built into it while the passenger side is just sliding rails. I could see that making a difference of an inch or more which in most cars wouldn't be noticeable but when you are so low, it would.

Yep
My wife is ummmm.....ahhhhh....ohhhh let's say "stout" and refuses outright to ride in my car (lowered). Once she is down there getting her back out is quite the show.
Now, my 78 year old mother is a very different story and finds all sorts of excuses why I need to take her someplace!

Demandred7 11-06-2014 03:18 PM

My wife is 4'11" and never complained of being too low to see. Getting in and out isn't that graceful though. She tolerates it, but, I'm not lowered.

i think the real issue getting in the car from the point of view of a pregnant woman or older person (i'm not either) is that the rocker panel is wide meaning there is a big distance from the seat to the actual outside of the car.

miata is lower but the seat is further to outside of the car

Garrett@Openflash 11-06-2014 06:16 PM

when im sitting in the drivers seat, theres barely enough room for my arm to fit into the foot well in the rear. I prefer shotgun

Delfiki 11-07-2014 12:45 AM

haha some of these responses are pure gold. I ended up tinkering with one this evening and ended up picking up a black 2013 with 25k on the odo. Its got some kind of exhaust (salesman said its probably stock from scion) and aftermarket pulleys (no idea). Hopefully the gf will sit in this one. She really hated the MX-5. Then again, she hates softtops as well. thanks everyone for the input! I think she'll be able to reach across the center console from the passenger seat :D

brzr 11-08-2014 11:57 PM

i'm 5'2'' and have to have the driver seat raised all the way up or i can't see as well........so i guess i have long legs and short torso? compared to the other shorties here that don't raise the seat and can still see over the dash?

i do wish the passenger seat could be raised as sometimes i feel (look) like a kid sitting in there

i'm the shorty in the pictures with my 5'7'' towering husband lol

oh yeah....this thread reminds me of years ago when we had an old altima......the seats didn't raise, and i could barely see anything out of the car..........had to sit on couple of pillows so i wouldn't be driving blindly

god that car sucked

and this summer i drove a 430 and the seat didn't go up......it was the funniest thing ever.....my neck hurt after 5 minutes of driving it

My wife is "almost" 5'1" and while she can't see any of the hood, she can see out of the front and sides without any issue.
