Just bought an Frs. What mods to do on auto trans

Call me a noob whatever. I bought an automatic FRS recently and am wondering how much power the auto trans can deal with and if there are any mods that you need to do if you considered achieving 300 to 350 hp. I havent bought any mods yet but was considering starting with the blitz power air cleaner and the isis catback exhaust for starters. Any tips would be appreciated

Head over to the tech threads and you will find more info then you can possibly ever assimilate!

Lunatic 11-04-2014 10:18 PM

I also have the automatic and love it. I started with a transmission temp gauge then added a additional cooler. Something you will need if your going to track your car.

Check out my build thread for pictures.

I think Crawford was running over 400 WHP on an AT BRZ without many issues from the Tranny...the motor was another story lol. There are a number of people with ATs hitting 300+ WHP. This AT is pretty strong, so probably won't need to mod it much. P&L hit 480+ WHP on stock auto tranny.

But heres what you can do to it http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18868
What Lunatic said is a must for forced induction ATs.

If you plan on reaching 300+WHP I assume you'll go Turbo route as its much cheaper than supercharger. In that case, maybe just get a 3" Catback right off the back instead of Isis's 2.75"?
If you'll get Blitz Intake (its really nice I hear) check if it needs to have the MAF scaled if it does, you better get a tune with it, it'll drive SO much better. If you opt for the Openflash route with tuning, check if Blitz includes an already Scaled MAF so you can just plug it in yourself.

And yeah...So much information out there as Tcoat said go over to the tech threads haha, and use google to search this forum...its a lot better than the forum's search function lol
Good Luck!

!

My FRS is NA and on the track before installing the extra tranny cooler my temps would easily get to hot. Now it stays at 230 or below.

Another thing I did was go to 4.88 rear end gears. I wanted to make the auto tranny gearing more on par with the manual gearing. This change dropped my 0 to 60 times by a full second, and dropped my 30 to 70 mph times by 1.5 seconds.
And I still get over 30 mpg at 70 mph. (2750 rpm)

No, that's the manual, not the auto. 300-350 should be fine with some cushion.

I'd get an oil cooler, trans cooler, catch cans and clear bra the paint to start.

Don't get a blitz intake and waste your money. Something like a Cosworth drop in panel filter would be better. Then just remove the sound tube and plug the hole.

WesleyG 11-05-2014 01:50 AM

if this is the same transmission from the ISF, as they have said, I see no problem with it handling 350HP easily

mikev77 11-05-2014 02:11 AM

I appreciate all the info. Ill check out these threads and go from there.

Its not the isf tranny. It is closest to an is250 tranny.

FastWhite 11-07-2014 09:33 PM

Like everyone has already stated, lot of info o this AT. From I have read, this trany is good for about 380 hp.
South Side Performance (SSP) has some good mods. Yes a trany cooler is needed for tracking the car. Auto cross, we'll let the opinions rain on that.
Change the trany oil. Some have said that after 15000 miles it's awful with tracking.
You can paddle extenders from Stark Mod Bargains.
The list goes on.

Where do I go to change the gearing?

I bought the gear set and small parts needed for the swap from Robert Weir, then took it to my favorite shop and had them do the installation.

ScorpionOzzy 11-09-2014 06:56 PM

Best thing you can do it trade it in, get a manual.

Don't let these MT "people" deter you from the AT. I've had mine for 18 mo now. Took 10th in overall PAX in my local AUTOCROSS region. It may not be AS competitive as the manual. But how many manuals have awesome downshifts. Every time.
It's a good runner, is good for about 380 hp. Like I mentioned before, Stark makes paddle extenders. The At handles FI well. Might have stall convertor issues. SSP makes AT upgrades. It is more of a blast to drive as a DD, using only manual mode. And I'm an AT driver for 40 yrs or so.
On a side note, dig, can you drink coffee, eat donut and drive in rush hour traffic with a manual. But then I have seen someone, in the early 90's, Rush hour traffic, driving and removing his driver side T roof. The car being a Corvette.
All I'm saying is the car is a lot of fun no matter AT/MT set up.
Enjoy it.

I agree, I love my AT. Love the way it shifts, esp on the track. Check this out, I'm the black #24 FRS.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 11-10-2014 08:41 PM

I heard a lightweight flywheel makes a difference

Is it really necessary to add in a supercharger if you want to make an automatic FRS "fun"?

The Header is Top Speed.
The exhaust is Perrin.
The other two pieces of pipe are DC Sports.

This post pretty much sums up this forum in so many ways. :sigh:

drewbot 11-12-2014 12:20 AM

The only mods you can't partake in are ones specific to the M/T

So that leaves

- Suspension
- Wheels
- Intake
- Exhaust
- Forced Induction
- Tuning

ie. a shit ton

No I don't think he's referring to that he's referring to the fact that no one is satisfied with the stock pure form
