now it's known its a targa. I wonder if Toyota would ever plan on this idea in terms of production model. Not exactly another targa that could compete with it on the market for the price

Anyone know what this is? I can't seem to dig anything up on it. Just saw it on Scions Instagram. Apologise if it's been posted already under some other "Scion code name" but I'm just curious. Obviously it's some sort of topless (no windshield) but what is it supposed to be about?

I just saw this now too and couldn't find anything about it, if only the "T" in that name stands for Turbo. I'm guessing we will know more about it tomorrow.

Or maybe there is a windshield, and the pillars are black. Something is going on there. It's just so hard to make it out in an Instagram picture even when zooming on it.... hhmmmmmmmm


Cream colored dash is interesting, bumper lip looks moulded too. I like that.

not sure how I feel about it becoming a convertible, if it becomes a reality of course... I thought the car was supposed to be a raw drivers car. And now it seems they are trying to portray it as something else, which in my eyes takes away from the original basics for the car. Now the chassis will be sloppier than its hard shelled brother and sisters. Not that I will be buying one, just speculating.

I guess from a marketing point its smart. Seeing as Mazda just revealed the new Miata. From the stand point of people who don't care about anything else than having the coolest convertible little sports car, they now have something else to think about. Die hard roadster track rats and most of the automotive enthusiast community will always know the Miata will always be the best affordable DIY track car. But this definitely throws something in the mix for people who just want some wind in their hair in a small/fun package.

I remember watching a top gear episode years ago. Clarkson says in it that the best convertibles are cars that were designed as a convertible only, not a convertible version of an existing car. I couldn't agree more with him. Now that I'm on a laptop I can clearly see the pillars much better.

Also I should add, I want more "crazy" colors like this from Scion. Many cars are sober colors Red, DEEP Blue, White, Silver, Gray, Black, and if we're lucky, Orange.

Scion's supposed to be a "youth" brand, why not allow wilder colors such as Greens, Violets, Yellows, or even Browns (like a solid coffee brown)? It says,
"Here's your car, and you can make it what you want it to be."

Back when Scion first started, all the colors where available on both the xA and xB. i would like them to go back to this idea, because the xB has a fantastic Maroon they call "SIZZLING CRIMSON MICA." and I think that color would look great on an FR-S.

I guess I'm just asking for more variety.

Not sure if its just me, or does the fenders/front bumper look a little wider compared to stock.

I turned the brightness up and yes the pillars are black also you can make out the lighting on the roof of the interior. It's subtle to make out with what we have but you can make out a slight silhouette... Could be a hardtop convert...

For the NSX-T, Honda added about 100 pounds in reinforcements... wonder what magic they could work on the car.

I think targa might be right, after turning the brightness up it looks like it's only missing the roof over the front two seats.....

i was just there at the reveal. the car is very detailed and i wish it would go into production. unfortunately, that is not the case. But who knows. wishful thinking at this stage. Jeremy always does a great job with his builds. In case you guys don't know, he is Cartel Customs. The man behind the original FRS convertible at SEMA two years back, the snap on tools IQ, the cartel Xd and so on.

This is definitely better than the 86 that Cartel Customs did for the 2012 launch and Long Beach Formula D/Grand Prix...ugh...

As a Targa or partial convertible it actually is a really nice compromise between a hard top and a full convert. To go full convertible they would need to add a lot of weight to beef up the body to avoid flex. By keeping at least the rear structure they prevent a great deal of flex and can keep weight down.
Unfortunately they have already made it very clear that they will not make a full convert due to costs and limited market so I highly doubt that they will produce this for those very reasons. It will remain a show car (and there is nothing saying that one even has an engine or drive train) I am sure.
But...would not be surprised to see somebody go into the aftermarket business as with the right equipment chopping the roof like that is not really all that difficult.

I think the only reason it hasn't been done is because of the low volume it would represent. I owned a '83 Camaro Z28 that had an aftermarket Targa top in it by the same company that did the one on the Simon and Simon tv show for those that are old enough to remember, and for others, check out Netflix. Couldn't find a decent picture of it on the interwebs although there are a bazillion photos of their Power Wagon.

Absolutely loved that car, and honestly it did not feel any less stiff than the T-Top version (never drove a straight roof version) although I do believe a car is better purpose built for it (think C7 Corvette).

Maybe this will be a Gen2 option, assuming we get one.

Had a buddy "Targa" his 72 Celica in a high school shop class and other then it taking several attempts to get it at least reasonably water tight he was successful. Pic below is sort of what it looked like but he left a little more roof at the back.
If he could do it with the resources available at a school it could certainly be done by some pros.
And here it comes!
But... That project simply cut a section of roof out and filled it with a folding section but did not in any way take safety or government requirements into account.
To do this properly it requires crash testing, new safety ratings, alterations to the body, a seal that will not leak and probably several other factors I just can't come up with right now.
Still doubt they will do a production model as the costs just won't warrant it with the limited market it would reach.

Toyota has done targa tops/t-tops before, and done them well. I'd be A-OK with this.

I'm not a fan of Targas, but I agree.

With TRD wheels, that interior & bodywork, and a dual exhaust, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. That color is also great - it's very similar to the Mustang's candy blue.

Also I'm stealing that two color idea. I wanted a carbon fiber hood anyways. I'll just wrap the roof and get the accent trim wrapped like they did.

Only thing I don't like about targas is storing or stowing the top. that, and you don't get the ridiculously awesome rear visibility of a convertible.

Back seat delete, interior and maybe the fenders. Everything else can go.

IMO, targa is cool but not practical when the car gets old. Frame-less windows plus targa is one of the worst possible combination for leaks.

What are the chances of a watered down production version coming out??? I think i would trade in for that lol....No rear seats :thumbup:

I remember reading a while back that the ft 86 was made so the pillars were strong enough, so it could be turned into a convertible in the future.

I think the odds of seeing a production model are next to nil for the same reasons they canned the full convert.
This is one time I would love to be proven wrong though!

As crazy as this sounds, I'd be willing to purchase a second FR-S if a targa top model officially releases.

The interior is gorgeous the rest of the car still doesn't do it for me, I think it's the 19s and the ride height

You know, last night I tweeted Scion back asking if this was an actual car or just a SEMA show car and they didn't respond, which led me to believe it was the latter.

However, my god is this thing pretty. This really does need to be come real, or at the very least a special package you can buy like the Roush upgrades for mustangs.

This is extremely well done.

I guess I'll eat my own words, but wow she looks amazing. If that were on the lot when I was in the market for the frs, it'd probably be in my driveway right meow
