Few things I found out on the BRZ - extra cigarette lighter outlet

So i'm taking a few parts off for one of my sponsors and my good friend and I found another outlet in the glove department!!

here's a few pics!!
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...-26-10_701.jpghttp://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o...-26-18_904.jpg

thought that was pretty cool cause you wouldn't need to use the outlet next to the cup holders!

also were looking into doing the 3 brake light...i'll post some pics of the installation as well as a install video!

Thanks!

Chee-Hu 06-03-2012 06:27 PM

Someone has already pointed this out. Thanks for sharing though :D

Keep us updated on the 3 brake light

I figured everyone knew that was there already :)

feedbag 06-04-2012 01:53 AM

I was trying to think of things this would be useful for and then it hit me: those times when you go away from home, forget your phone charger (wall plug), and need to charge your phone in the car overnight. Completely safe, secure, and out of sight in the glove compartment.

Besides the obvious of course, such as permanent installations like radar detectors and whatnot.

edit: does this outlet give power when the car is off? the one in the center console doesn't

Indestruct 06-04-2012 02:00 AM

I DIDN'T KNOW! Thank you, I've never sat in the passenger seat of my car, lol

no :( we tried it...just works when the key is turn ON...

choi0706 06-04-2012 11:24 AM

nice,,,,,,,,, it has a cabin air filter too!

Kimsey47 06-04-2012 11:25 AM

Looks likes some peeps need to read that manual! I bet you're missing out on more than just an outlet!

WRXGuy1 06-04-2012 12:12 PM

I like the location of that as having a radar detector run over the center console looks horrible.

Draco-REX 06-04-2012 12:45 PM

If the plug in the glovebox is keyed to the ignition (Subaru style) that's awesome. It'll be good to draw power from for other stuff. Additionally, I like the location because I can plug in my phone and toss it into the glovebox for long trips. Since it's connected by bluetooth, there's no other wires needed. Might as well stash it away.

300 pages? sounds like effort to me :)

It is, only gets powered with the car on or on accessory mode.

See, that's the way it should be. On Subarus, when you turn the car off, the car is OFF. The 12v ports, headlights, everything turns off. I'm a little miffed that on the BRZ the headlights stay on when the car is turned off. What part of OFF is confusing to Toyota?

Thanks!

The BRZ already has a 3rd brake light, it's in the rear window.

Put the headlights on auto, when you turn off the car they only stay on for a minute or so.

I dislike auto. People get used to it then won't think to turn them on in low visibility conditions. I don't like automated systems that can't do a task better than I.

Though I wonder if the timer is on the regular lights. I'll have to experiment with leaving them on...

Turbowned 06-04-2012 04:06 PM

My mom's Camry turns off auto headlights after 30-60sec, never actually sat there and timed it.

My Audi gives you the option to choose exactly how long the lights stay on when you shut the car off. Necessary? Not really. Cool? A little.

+1.

Half the time I don't even remember/bother to turn the headlights off in my WRX. I just look down halfway through my commute the next morning and think "Why are my headlights on?".

Try clicking the lock button on your key twice, they should shut off after the second press. (they do immediately with auto at least)

Agree completely!

My car has the "auto" feature. I choose to turn my lights on and off every day. Just like turning the key. Part of the motoring experience.

It's not a brake light, it's a rear fog light.

"JDM brake light" is not a thing. That red triangle is actually the rear fog light and it should not be wired to any part of your braking system. If you DO wire it correctly, put it on its own independent switch or wire it to the front fogs if you have them, then post your pictures in my Rear Fog Thread - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4689

The headlights can't just flat out turn off when the car shuts down. What if you stall while driving at night? Aside from auto headlights I have never had a car that turned off the headlights when the car shut off.

If the car stalls, the key will still be in the ON position so the headlights stay on. My other Subarus all shut the lights off when the key is turned to ACC or OFF and I never had any problems. It was great because I never had to worry about running the battery dry because I forgot and left my parking lights on.

I tried the double-lock button thing mentioned earlier and it didn't work. I'll try to remember to test if the lights turn of automatically tonight.

I hear you about not wanting to leave the lights on but that is why I like the auto. At the same time I am glad that we have the option to override the auto lights, options are good!

Double lock is supposed to turn off the lights if they are left in the on position? If so that is pretty cool. I'll test that when I go to grab lunch later.

Well it didn't on mine. But the post above said it worked on the 6AT. I have no idea why it would be different for a different transmission.

Bothers me too that the lights don't turn off when the ignition is off but I figured if you twist the light stalk to off then back to auto... BAM... the lights turn off. The manual control you wish for without risk of battery draining.

Toyota wants the headlights to stay on for a bit as a safety feature which, I think, is better than not. I've drained my battery leaving the lights on on another car (no auto light feature) after a 3am food run while working overtime, dazed and hungry. Don't know how human you are but I definitely am. Because of that, auto (compared to manual) lights are the lesser of the two evils.

Edit: I came to this thread searching for "brz cigarette lighter power when off" and just now realized all the June posts (other than mine) were from... 2012. :bonk:

To join in on the necro thread here, puzzles me a bit that my GT86 (with HID) and lights in position "on" does turn off the lights automatically when I turn off the car.
Either this is a brz special thing, or maybe its just an electroncal setting that is different in the US than in Europe. If that would be the case, you should be able to change this setting (like you can turn off the "beeping" sound when you do not wear a seatbelt)

I have a GT86 in the Middle East and my lights also turn off automatically when I turn off the car, in "auto" and on the "on" position. Let me know if you figure out how to keep them on for 30 or so seconds after switch off. Its a feature I miss especially because the lights are so sexy :)

Marcoscrdo 06-13-2013 09:41 AM

Brake light/Rear fog video would be amazing. Would appreciate it if done thoroughly step by step.

When I first got the car, the lights would turn off while on "auto" after 30 seconds, or if the lock button was pressed twice. When I took it to the dealer to get tinted a month after, the lights wouldn't turn off unless it was turned off manually. It doesn't bother me now as I'm used to turning it off, but would like to have the option to leave it on for 30 minutes for security purposes (walking into the building while the lights are on, etc.)
