Ouch...

Some dumb person decided to reverse in the wrong direction when leaving their angled parking spot and messed up the side of my car.....

I came out of the restaurant I was in to find my car like this. No note of any kind... I'm so disappointed because I am extremely careful with this car and there was nothing I could have done to avoid this...

Any ideas on the degree of damage? I haven't called my insurance yet but I will do so in the next few days. Good luck to the rest of y'all and I hope you don't have as bad of car luck as I do.

Gonna be expensive. Lots of paint matching and that's not a part of the car that is replaceable.

Datcrazyeric 10-24-2014 08:01 PM

Did you check if the restaurant had any cameras or if there was any cameras in the area?

I did a quick glance for cameras but I didn't see anything. I think I'll go back and look a little harder but I really doubt they have cameras where it happened...

Datcrazyeric 10-24-2014 08:19 PM

Never say never sometimes someone does see it happen or there is a camera that caught it

Dont look for cameras, just ask inside if they do. Will take you about 30 seconds and can make the world of difference. Maybe you just cant see where there camera is.

Sorry about your car :/

Texas BRZ 10-24-2014 10:44 PM

On your first pic, I assume that's you with the hat on and with the hand on your face. I can't imagine your frustration... :(

As people have told me in the past... It could have been worst. Hope everything recovers for you. :)

In that case, he must be a good friend since he feels your pain, lol. ;) :D

Tcoat 10-24-2014 11:07 PM

I have seen much worse fixed with paintless dent removal techniques.
Of course in this case the term "paintless" will not apply as it will need paint but the dent removal should work just as well.
I was really upset when I got a dent about the size of a dime on my fender so can't even imagine what that must feel like.

cnk 10-24-2014 11:28 PM

The only good thing is that a PDR guy may be able to at least get the dent out. You'll probably still need some bondo/sanding/paint though since it looks like the paint is down to the bare metal. At least it's easy access to that panel once you remove the rear seat and pop the panel off. Sorry about what happened though. . .sucks that people can be so inconsiderate and not take responsibility for their actions.

rxlynn 10-24-2014 11:54 PM

This kind of s**** is why I always try to sit in a restaurant where I can see my car. So sorry, but I'm sure it will eventually look as good as new.

AVodka14 10-24-2014 11:58 PM

I am hurting for you buddy. I am so sick of these fucking idiots that have no moral or decency to fix what they break. I hope there was a camera and justice is exacted. It would give me much pleasure to know their license plate was captured on camera and the police can make a personal visit to them. I would beat the shit out of the person that does this because they are low life assholes in all aspects of life. This world is full of blustering idiots and I am losing my hope for humanity on a daily basis.

Which is actually a good thought!
People are creatures of habit so whoever hit your car may frequent that restaurant.
You could swing by every once in a while and take a quick look at the cars for paint transfer or damage. Of course don't look too shady and get yourself shot or something like that!

FatFree 10-25-2014 12:24 AM

^^ good thinking.

The thing is I'm almost 100% sure I know what car hit me. When I pulled into the spot at the restaurant the person parked to the left of me was getting out of their SUV. I'm pretty certain it was them because it was late at night and when I got out of the restaurant my car was the only one left in the lot. So there wasn't enough time for that person to leave and for someone else to take their spot.

It also really sucks because after I initially parked my car I walked back to my car to re-park it and center it a little more in the spot because I was a tad too close to the car on my right. I should have just left it where it was...

I think the person who hit my car had a few drinks, got in their suv and noticed that there were barely any cars in the lot so they could reverse in the wrong direction to get out of the lot a little quicker. But they probably didn't see my car since it is much lower than their suv. Ahhh it's just so frustrating...

yellowfrs 10-25-2014 04:56 AM

I feel your pain. I hope the person who did this to your car will have someone do this to their person.

I also had this happened to my car a long time ago except the person actually made the effort to find me inside the building. Now that I love my 86 so much, I only drive it to work, and I always park far away from all other cars. I drive my suv when I have to run errands and stop at walmart, target, costco, etc where people don't think twice about swinging their car doors wide open, pushing shopping carts around cars, and backing up their cars into others.

Good luck with catching the jerk(s) and getting your car fixed!

HyperTech 10-25-2014 08:25 AM

wow, too much of these stupid driver that dont know how to drive and get away too easily.

i am lucky that my frs is not my primary car, i can use it only when i know i have a direct view on it 100% of the time.

jblmr2 10-25-2014 01:00 PM

Had this happen recently to my MR2 Spyder. The damage was in nearly the same place as yours but a bit more extensive. The Spyder has bolt on fenders so the labor would probably be a bit less than with yours. Body shop I chose quoted $3100. That included a new door skin, fender, and some minor parts. I'm certainly no expert, but my guess is that the fender will have to be replaced. Your insurance should take care of it under the comprehensive coverage. Sorry about what happened, I can feel your pain.

aznatama 10-25-2014 01:16 PM

File insurance claim, call it a day. why do ppl get all riled up over these things? I mean, that's why we have insurance for right?

It's not like they frame damaged your NSX, or destroyed some one-off carbon body work. Sure it's a hassle w/ insurance, but at least you'll get it all fixed, and then some. Also, looks like just sheet metal damage, not too hard to fix w/ some time. Be glad it's not anything suspension/drivetrain/frame related.

It just sucks that this is on my cars record now... And a $1000 deductible may not be a lot to some people but that's a big chunk of change for me. And what do you mean 'and then some?' I find it unlikely my car will be any better after this incident...

This should be comprehensive, not collision. Your comprehensive deductible is 1k? Wtf? Mine is 250 for comprehensive. Lowering your deductible for comprehensive won't raise your rates that much.

You can get a quote from the most expensive place, get insurance check, then bargain it down with the shop to offset your deductible. Since auto shops will also pay the deductible on your behalf. Lastly, you could go with an aftermarket hood if you're into that look, and save some money.

civdaddy 10-25-2014 08:18 PM

There is a good chance that the bodywork will not show up on a carfax report. My first car needed body work 2 times through insurance and it never showed on my carfax. Which is why carfax is not what many think.

Whenever i park next to someone who i have a suspicion may hit my car backing out, i always take a picture of them with my phone, making sure to get my car next to theirs, and their plate. Just in case.
I have a lot of pictures of people's shittily parked cars on my phone.

Do you live in Richmond BC? I ask because while living in Richmond I was hit and run in parking lots 7 times with my last vehicle.

Without any witnesses though, wouldn't it just be a case of he said she said? Unless there is visible damage on their car matching yours with paint?

That's definitely a possibility. Typically the shot includes the side of my car that is next to them, which shows no damage. Time stamps of shots without damage and shots with damage would hopefully be pretty compelling evidence, however, you can never be 100% covered. I just figure that it's better than nothing!

its replaceable, my body shop ordered a new panel from toyota and welded it in, came out pretty damn nice(had too much fun and the back corner hit a bridge at about 5mph lol

from about 1/3 from the back of the door(under it) to just in front of the rear window on the top

We get worked up because your insurance shouldn't have to pay for something you didn't do. Like you said yourself, that's why we have insurance.

I'm looking at an increase in my rates thanks to something flying into the front of my car while I was driving on the freeway. Something came off the car in front of me and I didn't have time or space to react.

I was able to get his license plate, but I'm sure it'll do absolutely nothing. Curious of what the estimate is going to be tomorrow when I take it into the body shop.

11 years of driving and three cars, first two never had some much as a scratch. This will be the third time in five months that my FR-S has been damaged by someone else.

Really starting to think this car is nothing but bad luck, should go get the fuel pump lemon lawed and just part with it and get back into a sedan.

I've had several collision claims over the years, including with 3 teenage sons, and have never had rates go up because of a collision claim (as opposed to a liability claim, where you are at fault). It usually requires that you file a police report though.

I feel your pain. I parked my car in a covered (hotel) garage and somebody left a long scratch on the driver's door. I suspect it's some sort of luggage sliding along. I was so upset and mad, but I couldn't do anything else, but had it buffed out. It's still visible, but I came to realize that it's just a car. I will change it in 8-10 years anyway. Sometimes you just have to let go.

Since we both live in Seattle, I suggest you try not to park in hotel garage. The hotel guests are visitors. They don't give a sh*t. There's no camera, no one knows.

phrosty 10-28-2014 06:36 PM

I had a very slightly smaller dent in the exact same spot when someone opened their door into my car in a parking lot. I had no paint damage at first.

Fixing stretched metal = cracked thin subie paint = had to repaint/blend nearly that entire side of car to get it looking perfect again. Total was a little under $1500.

My car is white though. I'd guess yours will be less work.

I actually got someone like this once.
I was street parked, and someone rolled out of their drive way and backed into me, then left.

I came back to find some good soul had left a note telling me which house the car came from, but for good measure, I took a sample of the paint they left on my door.
The cops later said the colour of the suspect's car matched what I peeled off.

As an aside, I thought the rear fender/quarter is all one piece for chassis rigidity?

My friend, sorry.... I feel your pain. But one thing that gets me giggling is the reflection of your friend, in the back window, with his hand on his cheek. Or is that you?

As for the fender, son't worry so much. They can do great things, paint matching/blending these days. If you lived out here, I could recommend someone. They did a fantastic job with my Walmart parking lot ding. 'Bout a grand, BTW.

Buck up bud. FR-S life goes on...

Hotrodheart 10-28-2014 07:01 PM

I support the death penalty for those who smah someone's car and drive away with no note. F them. Hard.
