Bad Day

Got in an accident today. Nobody was hurt. Except for my feelings... which are in critical condition.

I was heading down the middle lane of a 3 lane road. The left lane was backed up and stopped. Someone pulled out of line in the left lane into the middle lane in front of me. I slammed on my breaks, but I couldn't stop in time since they were essentially stopped in the middle of the road.

I could use some success stories right about now. Anyone get into an accident and have their cars returned to them good as new?

NIN69 10-10-2014 12:57 AM

Glad everyone is ok. Hope the other driver got a ticket. Time for their insurance to pay to get her looking new again.

Mr. Banana 10-10-2014 01:13 AM

Wow... Not a good feeling at all, I agree. And not the best time to point fingers but you were probably written up as at fault, correct?

I've had a similar accident (although more damage) in the past on a German car and it took 2-3 months to repair... I don't think yours should take that long though... After my repair was finished, car performed the same, I feel. However, if the accident happened to me today, I'd likely have thoughts of trading in due to my OCD mind.

Good news: Looks like the frontal impact wasn't as deep or forceful as it could have been... I'm guessing that your suspension and engine are safe.

As always, I'd try to convince the insurance to total it out, but not sure if they will accept since the damage is not as outstanding. Worth a try though...

Sorry to hear. :( (Btw, what area in Texas?)

TEXAS_LE 10-10-2014 01:41 AM

Man that sucks, I remember wanting to cry because I hit a raccoon and just cracking my bumper(nothing major just that the car is only a couple of months old). I couldn't imagine how this must feel. Good luck to you and I hope they can make it look good as new.

^ For a $20k repair, they should have just totaled it, no?

Looks good though (the after pic, of course).

Speed2th 10-10-2014 03:33 AM

It looks like no frame damage. It just the Impact point is high on top end of bumper and pushed up hood and fender. Did your air bag came out at all? If not, I think it is a better kind of front collision. I remember one of my friends rear end his celica to a Licoln town car and the impact was so hard that the engine fall on the floor lol

Fastbrew 10-10-2014 04:02 AM

Well, you could look at it as an opportunity to mod :)

Similar thing happened to me a few months ago. If you can convince them that he pulled out in front of you unsafely (i.e., without signalling), then you should not be at fault. Of course, having dashcam footage helps...

BRAND NEW AGAIN! :D I was sooooo pissssssed when this drunk driver hit me I wanted to jump on his hood and pull him from the driver seat, but its okay now! haha I mean just like you my feelings were very hurt. hahaha but I'm still here driving my car like a maniac!

andrealynn.BRZ 10-10-2014 08:54 AM

oh yeah and i forgot to mention he bought me a new exhaust! hahahaah! :happyanim:

Shark 10-10-2014 10:45 AM

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. To answer the questions you guys have had...

This is in College Station, TX. Unfortunately I don't have a dash cam. And it happened so fast I honestly don't remember if she used her turn signal or not.

I wasn't written up as at fault. Neither of us were. All the cop did was have us exchange info (which we had already mostly done) and listened to both of our sides of the story. He didn't even fill out any paperwork. I wasn't in the best of mind sets at the time, but if I remember right he said if anyone was towed he'd have to write a citation, but as it was we could just go.

I guess I could have pushed it and she probably would have gotten a citation? The other driver was already having a pretty hard time though, she had been crying for a good 15 minutes before the cop got there.

Also one of the first things she said when we pulled over was that she was "so sorry."

No air bags deployed.

raven1231, everything looks good after the repairs. I'm also surprised they didn't total it with $20k of damage. I assume that included some engine repair/replacement?

chas3wba0, your video wasn't easy to watch. Our situations weren't exactly the same, but what the other driver did was pretty similar in both cases, changing lanes from a stop. I was much further from the intersection though. At least a hundred yards away (the left lane was REALLY backed up). Do you mind telling me what happened afterwards with the insurance and all?

andrealynn.BRZ, hah I noticed the new exhaust. Figured that might have been a result of it all.

I'm worried she'll never be the same, sometimes cars just aren't ever the same after an accident. But hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm concerned about handling and non-factory paint jobs. It didn't look like there was any significant damage to anything in the engine bay, but it's hard to say. The hood was wedged and I couldn't even pop it.

Thanks again for all of the good thoughts. And if anyone has any more positive outcomes to share, keep em' coming.

Wait, the same driver hit you twice? On seperate occasions? Is this person stalking you?

it took 3.5 months because i told them i want their best work done and its not my intention to sell this
@Shark raven quoted my pictures, at the time of the hit i had the car for 3 months and it had 35xx miles on it. i walked away with a hks air duct, oem jdm clear side markers and a mishimoto radiator for not much outta pocket and free install labor and alignment for the coilovers i had.

Tell your wife to stop following you so close!(couldnt resist sorry)

aznatama 10-10-2014 01:32 PM

1. Get an attorney ASAP, else their insurance will try to say you were at fault and you'll get screwed

2. My advice is to always try to get car totaled, you'll get full dealer retail value based on selling price of your car in the area, which is much more than you'd spend replacing it, not to mention having to deal with the depreciated value, rental cars, crappy repair jobs, etc.

Yeh the same driver. she hit me then tried to run so i got back in front of her and she hit me again, after i got out, snapped pics, the cops told is (via the phone) to pull into the parking lot...she ran again... she ended up in a bigger accident less than 5min later where she was caught.

They said she was is diabetic shock. I got my car back 2 months (on the dot) later all fixed up. 10K of damage.

Haha

Well that sucks big time but at least you didn't get hurt. I got rear ended in July by a young woman who was too busy texting rather than driving. My girlfriend is having all kinds of back issues now and it's causing her all kinds of stress because it's affecting her work (she's a nurse who spends a lot of time on her feet). The other driver was cited at fault, but the insurance case won't be resolved until all medical issues with my girlfriend are resolved. Initially we were letting my insurance company handle the claim since her insurance company would have to pay for everything but once the medical issues started affecting with her work, it became too complicated and we had to get a lawyer. Oh yeah, the damage was $4500 to my xB and that was just a fender bender.

chas3wba0 10-10-2014 04:21 PM

@Shark the other insurance company did try to put 30% fault on me, but we contested it and I ended up getting my deductible back. Without dashcam footage or a witness, all you have going for you is a detailed statement, your word against her's. It doesn't matter that no citation was issued because the final decision of fault will be up to the insurance companies.

As far as the car not being the same: find a good body shop that offers a lifetime guarantee on their work; they usually know what they are doing. A car is just a bunch of pieces bolted together, and if enough pieces are replaced, you won't be able to tell the difference. Your damage really isn't that bad, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

rxlynn 10-10-2014 05:50 PM

Am I understanding that the cop didn't even write a report? You might need something documenting her statement at the time of the accident (sounds like she was totally admitting fault), just in the event that she later decides she has whiplash or something and tries to get your insurance to pay her medical bills. I was involved in a wreck that involved no contact between the two cars, and the other party tried to get my insurance to pay for his lost time at work.
