FR-S, One of the Most Ticketed Cars in USA?!

Looks like insurance for our cars will rise... I wonder if when listing FR-S, they also include the BRZ too?

http://www.freep.com/story/money/car...t-us/16478571/

My friend, who sent me this link, was looking into buying a WRX or BRZ but looks like he won't be getting a WRX if insurance will be expensive because of this.

Here are screenshots:

I was curious about the BRZ as well. Clicked further into that link, BRZ is 125th with 22.0%. So not listed with the FR-S after all.

Embarrassing to be on that list with some of those cars! Topaz, IC REALLY?????

It is traffic citations in general though so maybe all the Topazes are for leaving parts behind??????

Thanks. I'm using my phone and when I clicked the link, it didn't show the list for the mobile site.

I am surprised and not surprised at the same time to see the WRX is #1 on that list.

Also, is anyone really shocked that Scion is the most ticketed brand? Considering that they market towards kids and they're popular amongst the elderly.

Hey define "elderly"!!!!!! (JK)
I totally agree with both points! Didn't read the whole list but there are a few cars that are notable for their absence on the list. Like where are the Evos and Eclipses? Mustangs and the rest of the muscle car crowd crew are notably missing at the top as well. Shit if I owned a Mustang and the Topaz was above me on the list I would start getting tickets just to prove a point!!!! (not really)

OH wait I just got it! The statement is "one out of every 3 WRX drivers" so the percentage is based on the number of tickets per driver of THAT type vehicle! Sooooo.. that means that one of the four people still driving Topazes got a ticket and that brought them way up in the percentages!

ZionsWrath 09-30-2014 02:39 PM

All I really gathered from that list is a surprising amount of drivers get tickets.

Personally I got 1 speed ticket and pulled over 4 times the first year I had the car. This year I decided to start going to the track lol

Had one ticket in over 40 years of driving! Been pulled over hundreds of times but am just such a nice guy I always manage to talk my way out of it! (really I have no clue how I talked my way out of most of them as they had me dead to rights and I would have given me a ticket).
The only times I have been pulled over in the FRS each cop just wanted to know how much I paid and how I liked it! One even bought me a coffee.

edeekeos 09-30-2014 02:52 PM

Yeah, I'm not helping this statistic. Just got a triple digit over the weekend..

Takumi788 09-30-2014 02:55 PM

This seems crazy! Aside from the WRX being #1. I haven't been pulled over once in my FRS in the two years of ownership. Which is saying a lot since i used to get pulled over once a week when i owned my 240sx.

This must be bc people hate it when their new car (the FRS) is referred to as slow. So they over compensate for this and speed and drift everywhere. Rather than people knowing their car is fast (dodge viper #522 on the list) so they don't need to speed.

gramicci101 09-30-2014 02:56 PM

Subaru Tribeca with 29.7%?

WTF? Who is driving Tribecas? Unless they're disengaged soccer moms that are swerving all over the road while they text and drink their Starbucks.

Tcoat 09-30-2014 02:57 PM

I'm guessing it's that most viper owners are probably middle age, older men, who don't speed or drive recklessly like younger guys tend to do.

The Honda Fit could beat us from a stoplight, so that seems about right.

sofargone561 09-30-2014 03:07 PM

Its because its cheap enough for some kids to get as a first car. I would be interested to see what age the majority of those tickets written where. Not to say older guys don't get tickets but i know when i was 16/17 i could care less about a ticket now (9 tickets later) I'm extra careful.

Yeah, us young people won't be able to afford such a machine.

where was all that data compiled from?

Obviously from drivers/cars...but ALL of them?

The page with the rankings says that the data came from "550,000 insurance quotes for drivers just like you." So there's definitely a margin of error considering that the tickets might not have been verified.

Police records.
Don't know about states but up here all that info is made available to the Insurance Companies.

Tagging someone who is going 100+ mph on a public road is being hateful or bored?

Tcoat 09-30-2014 03:40 PM

Very important to understand that this is percentage of DRIVERS per car not percentage of cars!
The rarer the car the higher the percentage would be with fewer drivers in the pool.
If the one guy with a 1936 Bugatti in the states got a ticket the rate for that car would be 100%.
Explains how the numbers can look so odd for some of the cars.

Sigh-on-Rice 09-30-2014 03:42 PM

Prius C!? :confused0068:

Well, to be fair, 100+ is definitely pushing it. I'm just saying, you are much more likely to get ticketed around here due to the amount of bored cops on quotas that treat "speeders" like criminals. And the highway speed limits are much lower than anywhere else in the country here, despite having 6 perfect lanes, walls dividing the directions and completely flat land with miles of visibility... They are just so desperate for easy money.

I'm sure someone will say this isn't true but I drove through New Mexico a few times and everyone, even family vans, was going over 100mph. It was as if they had 0 concern that there would ever be a cop pulling them over. But speed itself isn't an issue, it's when you have low speeds and people clumping up together that you run a high risk of accidents.

Do they give tickets for douchbaggery?

paiceyfan 09-30-2014 03:53 PM

I had a Civic SI SEDAN for seven years without a ticket or even being pulled over, and then bought the BRZ. Within three months of owning the BRZ, I had a ticket. My driving habits did not change.

I know a cop and he tells me they 'profile' all the time...

8R6 09-30-2014 03:57 PM

That is probably what will SAVE me!
I can see it now... I will get pulled over based on the profile determined by my flashy orange, lowered, exhaust rumbling, tinted window "race car". I will roll down my 20% tint window and they will be greeted by a visage of an older version of Ned Flanders. They won't know WHAT to do!
All the times I got pulled over in my lightly modded Lancer GTS the first question out of their mouth was always "is this your car"?

torqdork 09-30-2014 04:20 PM

I'd like to see their methodology (type of infraction) but it isn't shown.

Insurance.com says that tickets aren't as big a factor as repair rates and expense. Makes sense. If they listed rates based on repair history I'm guessing there would be many more 4X4 SUV's in the mix than FJ Cruiser.

"While speeding tickets and other violations drive up your own insurance rates, a high number of tickets is not an indicator that a car will be expensive to insure. Insurance companies care more about claims. If a particular model is involved in more accidents or is more expensive to repair after a collision, an owner can expect to pay higher rates even if his own record is clean."

Dezoris 09-30-2014 04:21 PM

My last two renewals went up by almost 15% on this pile.
I shopped around as well, equally expensive. This is what happens when you own a car tailor made for the younger tuner crowd. I knew I should have got a PT Cruiser.

fradet 09-30-2014 05:27 PM

Toyota Prius C – 27.0% wtf

pcporo 09-30-2014 06:19 PM

No tickets for me (yet lol) in the FRS, but i can't go anywhere without every cop eyeballing me. Like they're just waiting for me to slip up.

noobcake 09-30-2014 06:51 PM

not at all surprised for the wrx, stangely no camaros/mustangs are on the most ticketed list? not even the Evo X? and for the prius, that isnt a shocker. I hope everyone of those cockroaches gets a ticket. The most aggressive drivers on the street are the ones in the prius.

can confirm, once you get out of Clarksville, the drive from Louisville to Indianapolis is 2.5 hours long with 4 or 5 slight bends in the road. Speed limit: 55-65.

tahdizzle 09-30-2014 07:35 PM

This is buy percentage of owners.

I have NO idea how many volkswagon rabbits or Mercury Topazes are on the road. But That right there is a good indication that you should probably smirk and say "Yup, thats the internet".

wbradley 09-30-2014 08:18 PM

And I just happen to drive an FR-S AND a '15 WRX.

So far 1 speeding ticket in FR-S and just got nailed by a red light camera in the WRX.

Mercury Topaz, proof that shitty cars don't last. Haven't seen one for years.

probably also most vipers are driven like 500 miles a year, and like rack up a total of 5000 miles before they power over into a tree.
