For those who had Celica's before your Fr-s
So I just got T-boned by some whore and she killed my celi....I'm thinking of getting the fr-s because there is pretty much nothing else I like. For those who had Celica's prior to your Fr-s...how does it compare to the celi and what are your likes and dislikes..Does it eat a lot more gas? What are things I should know before deciding on this car? Anything else I should know? I'm super depressed and want some input to see if this car is right for me :( Thanks

i never owned a celica so i cant say much but i hope you decide on joining us!

I have not had a celica either, but I can give you a little info for comparison.
It takes premium gas. My driving (a lot of low speed stop and go mixed with highway speeding) gets about 25 mpg. I've gotten 33 mpg on road trips. It really depends on how you drive. It has its quirks. The high pressure fuel pump chirps sometimes. That's endemic to all hpfp's, not just ours. A little 2 stroke oil fixes it. There isn't much sound deadening on the inside, so it can be pretty loud. My OEM hands-free is worthless because of the background noise. This is the most fun car. I've driven a lot of decent cars, and this one takes the cake. It's not super refined and luxurious, and it's not super powerful, but when you're taking corners you don't even care about all that. It is genuinely fun to drive. I smile every time I see my car. |
I can't say anything with regards to Celicas but I just got my FR-S a little over a week ago and so far I'm averaging 32mpg while driving around 450 miles so far. So I can't imagine a Celica getting much better than that.

using premium gas is not that much more so don't let that deter you. this car is a blast!

celice gt
Had one in the mid 2000's. This car is much more engaging. The issue with the FRS/BRZ is that the mod bug will be sure to hit you. Especially with all the enablers on this forum LOL. Didn't have that with the Celica GT. I'd say come join us.

I was the original owner of a Celica 2004 GTS with full OEM aero kit. Traded her for a Monogram FR-S. I wouldn't have given her up for a base FR-S but the Monogram closed the deal. I stalked my Celica for two months till the dealer finally sold her. It was hard to leave her but I have not regrets. The community of FR-S and BRZ owners has been the best and the aftermarket parts for the FR-S is insane! Lots of fun!

My wife had a Celica. It was nice for a FWD machine. Apples and oranges. Test-drive a twin and make sure it includes a second gear pull to redline.
|
I know someone selling a '90 celica GTS for not a lot of money, if you're interested. They're in Utah though.
|
@Obja, lol!
I've owned every gen of Celica. IMO the one closest to an FR-S was an '85 GTS coupe since it had the same f/r drivetrain layout and balance. By any other objective or subjective measure an FR-S is superior by a mile. 93 octane recommended but others here run fine on 91. Very efficient car for 200hp on tap. My DD through twisty mountain two-lanes averages 25 mpg, better than any Celica I've owned. Look around for a leftover '13 10 Series or '14 Monogram for the LED DRL headlights and creature comforts. Good luck, sorry about your wreck and hope you're OK. |
The Celica is nothing like the FR-S other than the fact the GTS Celica runs on the same gas...
FR-S makes the Celica look like a Prius. http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/...s/mdr-ordi.gif |
BTW I had a 2005 GTS 6spd with all of the TRD parts.

I had a 2002 GT before this. I'm glad I switch for the extra power, easier shifting, lower center of gravity and handling and believe it or, more head space in the front seats. Things I miss are definitely having the hatch space, being able to fit two normal sized people in the back, consistent 32-33 mpg (Regular gas with GT), shorter clutch travel (I will probably adjust the one in the FRS so it's not a big deal) and a sunroof. Overall happy with my experience after a month. Just need a short throw and an exhaust like on my Celica and I will be set.
You definitely have to be willing to compromise in those few areas though. I knew that going into it and it's definitely worth it. |

I ave 29.5 miles per gallon. Premium only. Mine is a daily driver mainly highway. I missed my Celica sun roof and space in the back seats. I don't try to fit anyone in the back seats in the FR-S. Lots more cargo space when you lower the back seats opening into the trunk. You will gets alot of attention.

As for gas mileage, I've been getting about 27 with about 60-40 highway (M/T). That gets me around 270-280 per tank. With the same trip in the Celica I would range from 31-33 mpg and could travel around 370-400 miles on a tank(M/T as opposed to the auto which got better MPG like how the FRS are). I am traveling a little more now and have had to fill up 4 times in a month.. The tank in the FRS is smaller though; 13.1 gallons as opposed to 14.5 in the celi. |

I had a GT-S from 2004-2009. Sometimes wish I still had it. Luckily, the person I sold it to lets me keep in touch with it on facebook lol.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...d1b98a96bfab83 https://scontent-a-sjc.xx.fbcdn.net/...40&oe=54C8E180 Even though the Celica's interior plastics make it seem cheaper, build quality throughout the car was slightly better being made by Toyota in Japan and its 2ZZ-GE engine was co-engineered with Yamaha (who co-developed the LFA's engine). Same robust engine used in the Matrix and Corolla XRS, Pontiac Vibe GT, and Lotus Elise. The 86 engine and chassis, however, are of Subaru build quality. Which is completely passable, just doesn't feel as bulletproof. But the overall driving feel is better engineered in the 86 plus it looks better. If I had to pick between a Celica and 86, 86 wins. The community has always been a part of the ownership experience for me and the 86 community is doing pretty well right now. Events go on year round such as 86Fest last weekend. And if you're gonna go blue, might as well go World Rally Blue. ;) https://scontent-a-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/...fd&oe=54C84D4A https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...0cb92c6537787e |

I don't live with the frs on a daily basis because it is my girlfriends car. So I can't comment on all the small things. Other than it makes less squeaking sounds than my GT-S. :)
But basically take just about everything on the Celica and make it better. Besides the obvious handling ability, I think the frs is a overall more comfortable car to ride in. Stock vs stock the frs has way better take off from stop and get up and go. My Celica is heavily modified so it is hard to recall a lot stock vs stock. But one thing I still can not get used to is how light the clutch feels on the frs. And I still want to feel the lift kick in. :( |
Sorry to talk down on your car that you've loved for so long but FR-S>celica everytime for me. The celica is crap in comparison. It might have had a more refined interior but when you throw in mechanical and performance aspects + driving feel, it wins every time in my book.

Gas mileage:
I was getting 33 regularly commuting with the Prius tires. I put on some all season tires last fall and that dropped to 31. Retired in April and have been doing some road trips up in the hills lately. The AVG reading is 34.4 now even on the all seasons. |

Likes: The FR-S makes little rattles here and there that are barley noticeable just like the celica. Handling is pretty good, you interchange understeer for oversteer when going to the FR-S. I miss my hatch, Terribly so.... Dislikes: The FR-S is slower than the Celica stock for stock The FR-S is everything the Celica should have been during the 7th gen. I felt pretty at home in my FR-S after the switch |

I had a Celica before my FRS but that was 38 years ago and it was a rusted out 4 year old 72 that burned more oil then gas (I got about 100 miles to the quart) so I would have to say the FRS is much better
|
I had an '87 Celica Coupe (so way older than you guys are talking), but until the FR-S it was my favorite car I'd owned. I put just shy of 200k miles on it; it was the most comfortable car I'd ever driven - and it took 10+ hour road trips about twice a year - and I had loads of fun.
The FR-S is what I never realized I wished my Celica had been. I didn't have the lift-back so the reduction in space wasn't a huge issue (though I did once fit four passengers into my Celica for a Mexico road trip and that sure aint happening in the FR-S). My step-dad had an '85 Celica and I feel like the FR-S is the perfect combination of the last of the RWD and the first of the FWD. Gas mileage is obviously the biggest factor. I have a sixty mile round-trip commute and manage right at 30 mpg at seventy + mph on the highways. But the reality today is that's darn good for a "practical" sports car. The 4 cyl Mustang theoretically can beat it - but then you're driving a Mustang. :P |
My early 70's Celica got about the same gas mileage, but was nowhere near the car that we have in the twins.
