2016 or 2015 FR-S?

Yeh I'm way early on this but seems Scion is consistent with mid to late May on the official release of the next model year. The specs on the '15 started their way out into the web about January if I remember and I will be buying between April and June of 2015 cash! So whenever someone hears something factual or extremely close to factual and realistic on the 2016 model to make it worth the wait that would be cool. But something like the 2015 updates i.e some retuned suspension part's, shark fin, dash plastics upgrade, etc. are not the changes I'm looking for. Noticeable body style and interior changes that look good is what I'm after. I don't need to race around everyday or drift, I want a fun everyday car to take to the track every once in a while. My first and subsequent cars were all RWD and F1 fan so it's kinda in my blood to own another RWD sports car. To each their own. Anywho when you see anything out there on the interweb about the 2016 changes post it here for my selfish needs :P Since I am paying cash I want to spend right the first time, I plan to have the car for a while. .

Don't count on anything major except perhaps a limited model from each of the brands.

Pretty sure Toyobaru will stay close to the original if they eventually do a mid-cycle rework. Think AP1 and AP2 S2000. Maybe they will tune out the bulk of the torque dip if they can maintain emissions. The OFT does it too, but not sure if/how emissions are affected.

What he said!
The ONLY reliable source will be either from Toyota/Subaru themselves or a reputable major magazine/website that has the actual car in their hands. All other sources such as the forum rumor mongers, small sites looking for clicks, wanta be fiction writers, etc. should just be ignored.

+1 on the limited edition model...they seem to have one every model year (2013 10 Series, 2014 - Monogram & 2015 Release Series 1.0)

However, the changes are unpredictable. The 1986 Supra received a Turbo model one year after, and the 1993 MR2 got new wheels and upgraded suspension 2 years after the 1991 model.

I'm waiting for the 2016 FR-S news to come out too. It would be best to wait for the news around January like you said, or later for that matter.

The nice thing is that if you can be patient, it works out because by the time you find the changes the 2016 are getting if they aren't anything impressive then you could get a deal on the 2015s as they are phasing out, possibly even get your hands on a sitting Release 1.0.

These are wise word! That is exactly what I did with my 14. Got a great deal because they had the 15s coming in soon and had a few 14s still sitting there. When I saw the 15s were no big change I went for it.
Good luck on getting a Release 1 just "sitting" as they are pretty much already all sold or spoken for.

Yeh the rumour sites give me a headache..lol I do watch for the spy shots and Tetsuya Tada's Google alerts but obviously way early. Lot's of rumour sites out there to weed through unfortunately:thumbdown:

Sideways&Smiling 09-29-2014 11:34 PM

I'm expecting 2016 to be the first major update. I would not expect another limited edition with minor tweaks after all of those they've already put out.

Probably power and styling tweaks. How those will come, however, I have no idea.....

I'm in the same position right now as well. But from my research, the differences between 2013 and 2014 are minimal at best. With so much the could have augmented, I am surprised at the lack of... everything.

Same thing goes for comparing 2014 and 2015.

So I figure the biggest difference between buying a 2015 or 2016 would be about a year of waiting.

Model 2016 will not have any serious changes. Subaru classifies the current 2015 BRZ model as spec C (production after July 2014):

http://i62.tinypic.com/2wfvkon.jpg

Subaru has usually 4 specs for all the cars (A, B, C, D) and then they create a new model. Also mid-cycle upgrades are always introduced with spec C. The same should hold for the other brands as Subaru is the manufacturer.

Yes, changes on the spec C model were very limited even for Subaru (they usually do moderate upgrades). Only important change was the suspension, but we should have also a minor body style upgrade and also on the inside. This gives a mark that the relationship between Toyota and Subaru is not very good and that they are not investing a lot anymore. It also gives a blurred picture on the future of this car.

Personally, I wouldn't wait. I already have the spec C model and it is a great car! It drives great and it is already a classic. You could wait only if you want a new "limited edition" model. I am sure there will be 1 or 2 more editions. Otherwise, go for the new model... if it'll exist!

funwheeldrive 09-30-2014 06:28 AM

If they do refresh the my16 it will probably have little quirks similar to the my13. You should wait for the 2017 model.

Oh but then the 18 may be even better so wait for that or the news is the 2020 will be the best ever so hang in there!!! It can go on forever!
The bad part is that you can wait for better right up to the point that they make them worse! When that happens you have to go back to the last "good year" and end up scrambling for what ever you can get or looking at a used car!

Yeah sure, this is also a possible scenario. There are discussions between Toyota and BMW for a new car in this category. Subaru will stay out of this collaboration. This will not be a big issue for Subaru. For them it is the worst selling car. They are doing much much better by selling the forester's, the outback's, the WRX's etc. Besides, they want to focus now on their new universal AWD platform. BRZ doesn't fit very well on this direction. If this comes true, then Toyota will have to change the boxer engine with a smaller displacement turbo engine from BMW. This is the current trend and now Toyota understands it.

However, I wouldn't buy this car . I prefer the low center of gravity of the boxer engine. This makes the car unique! Besides, if you want such a car then it is already available. Go buy a Genesis or so many others ..

If it was possible without affecting the consumption and the emissions, they would have done it already.

The 2016 model will be awd turbo making 500hp and will finally be able to smoke toyota siennas all day long.

There is loads of speculation out there about what BMW and Toyota are going to put out but very, VERY little fact. Everything I read about them doing a sports car (again all speculation) indicates that if they do it is not going to be the $30000 car that we have now but more of a supercar/hybrid combo in a price range that would put you in a top line Porsche or better.
The poor little twins would just go away and the ones we already have will turn into actual collector cars.

They have already a prototype of this supercar/hybrid combo you're mentioning. It is not just speculation. They also mentioned about a possible collaboration for the next BMW 1-series. If this comes true, it is on the same price range of the twins. Personally, I hope all these to not come true. I want the little twins to go on their 2nd generation with Subaru. Otherwise, everything is possible. Even the little twins to become collector cars. Time will tell.

Sorry Stevesnj we sorta hijacked your thread here! I think the point is that you can wait forever and take your chances on the unknown or go for what is known as fact right now.
I thought of playing the waiting game to see what would come out next but when I saw the minor changes between the 14s and 15s decided to just pull the trigger now. No regrets at all, as I got a great deal on the 14 (the 15s were on the truck on their way to the dealer and they still had 5 14s sitting on the lot). After driving a 15 I think I prefer the handling characteristics slightly better on the 14 (could be placebo effect in that I already owned the 14). You are actually at a good time of year right now as there will still be loads of 14s around that dealers will be willing to deal on. Even with the "pure pricing" there are other ways to get a break from the dealer if they want to move stock. I paid full price for mine but also got the TRD exhaust, lowering springs, drop in filter, window tint, clear bra and hood protector and Scion lip spoiler for just an extra $1500 as the dealer REALLY wanted to sell me the car.
Look at it this way. Every day you go without one is a day of lost fun you will never get back!

nikitopo 09-30-2014 10:03 AM

Yes we hijacked a bit his thread. Personally, I was trying to explain why the 2015 model is the actual refresh model and why the changes are limited. This gives also a fact of what is coming for 2016.

Thanks everyone for the discussion!

He's been making this same thread for over 2 years when people were wondering "what the 14's would be like".....he's not really interested in buying one, just an online pretender.

Let's just skip to the end. Wait until the announcement is made that the car is going out of production and buy the final model year. That way you'll be sure you got all the improvements.

If they are indeed improvements!
Over the years I have seen the manufacturers "improve" great cars to the point they were no longer usable for the purpose they were originally built for.
They have already (my OPINION only, others my differ) dumbed down the suspension on the FRS and called it an improvement. What is next?
New emission requirements that drastically reduce performance could be released any time the various governments involved feel like it.

It's a more safe and controllable car that even Tsada says it needed to retune the suspension but enough to not take the fun out of the equation and not make counter-steering an every corner event. I will control when I wanna go tail out not when the car decides.

I understand why they did it but that doesn't mean I agree. Have never yet put mine out where I didn't mean to so it isn't that horrible.
Just proves my point that the designers will decide what is "best" for us and eventually change the whole works to a different handling and performing car. Sometimes those changes are for the better but sometimes they just plain suck!
How much seat time do you have in any year of the car? Mine is two months old and has 8000 miles on it already (all by me) so I would think I just might have a better grasp on the driving dynamics of the vehicle.

And according to the rumour mill so was the 14 and then the 15! There is absolutely zero official statements that there will EVER be a turbo/supercharger on these cars.

(Unless you were being ironic and knew that already. Hard to tell in writing)

You do have a better grasp on the car and I have driven my friends '13 when it was new and a few test drives. The consensus on this forum and by Toyota and Subaru say that it is too much tail out. Also when the Chief Engineer of the car even says it needs to be a tighter suspension they made changes for the car and driver experience. Im not saying your opinion is wrong just saying the majority of car owners say the car tail whips too much, enough to spur a design improvement.

I mentioned that the current model (spec C) is the middle life model. Any serious changes in the life of a car are always done by Subaru during the middle life. Then we have a new generation. In the past they even changed the entire engine! People think that this might not be the case for the twins, because they saw limited changes this year. So, they incorrectly think that the changes will come the next manufacturer year. This is wrong based on the history and the current spec.

Of course, exceptions can always exist. Management might decide differently. If you want definite answers just wait a bit.

I'd be shocked if we don't see a 2.5L by 2017. (Or at least an option) I HIGHLY doubt we will see any forced induction but a bump in displacement seems like a no brainer here.

Suspension changes made the car more "complete". However, I understand if someone wants to buy the previous model in a lower price. Then he could invest the price difference on a new suspension. Personally, I prefer the factory upgrade.
