I'd like to share with you how a Circuit Motorsports tuned Toyota GT86 race-prepped rally car performed in Peru's largest annual rally race - the Rally Caminos Del Inca 2014. This is a grueling 2,550 km rally with 5 days of racing spread out over 9 days racing on tarmac and dirt/gravel stages from sea level to over 14,000 ft. in altitude. It is one of the few Rally races of its kind left in the world -- racing city to city over long distances on a variety of surfaces anywhere from public highways to goat trails.

Lucho Alayza, a well known rally racer in Peru, is the owner/driver of this GT86 rally car. He very recently upgraded to the GT86 from a Toyota AE86 rally car as he saw much potential in the GT86.

At the end of the race, Lucho finished first in class with the nearest class competitor over an hour behind. Lucho also finished in 2cnd place overall, beating many more powerful and better funded rally cars such as the Subaru STi and Mitsubishi EVO.

We helped Lucho with some parts, and I performed a remote Dyno tune on his GT86 (results below). He decided to give the EcuTek RaceRom tuning a try instead of going with a full standalone ECU, such as a Motec or Haltech unit. The results were great, and the engine is performing flawlessly, with the car running flat-out at 142mph and 7200+ RPM for extended periods of time on the tarmac stages.

Please find below race standings, photos, videos, and tuning information about this awesome GT86 Rally car and Lucho Alayza's great success!

Enjoy!!

Official Final Race Results: Lucho won 1st in class with over an hour lead, and placed 2cnd overall!!!

http://s14.postimg.org/nh9pbltcx/Official_Results.jpg

Final Race Results:

Lucho with his rally GT86 has won his class, with an overall 3rd place podium finish! Impressive!!

Lucho finished over an hour ahead of his nearest class competitor, and was only 6:41 (min:sec) behind the overall 2cnd place EVO driver.

http://s15.postimg.org/trfoaq8dn/final_results.jpg

Race day 4 standings:
Lucho and his GT86 remain 1st in class, and have maintained 2cnd overall!

Lucho anticipates the EVO only 12 min. behind to overtake him in the last stages of the Rally on Sunday, for a 3rd place overall finish, which is still amazing. The last stages are all tarmac with long straights and sweepers, and the EVO has an awesome tarmac setup and close to an extra 200whp over him.

Race day 3 standings:
Lucho and his GT86 remain 1st in class, and now 2cnd overall!

Race day 2 standings:
Lucho - GT86 is 1st in class, and 3rd overall out of 90 some competitors

Engine Setup and Tune:

Setup:
K&N Intake
Nameless Performance 4-2-1 Header with 2.5" straight pipe
TODA racing big throttle body (may be coming off)
TODA racing lightweight flywheel
TODA racing lightweight pulley kit

Running 98 RON gasoline

Redline: 7800rpm
Top Speed on flat Tarmac: 142mph (5.13 FD installed after tune)

Tuned using EcuTek RaceRom by Circuit Motorsports!

http://s17.postimg.org/pk7g2w3fz/104...78582283_n.jpg

The dyno used is a Dynocom dyno.

Note: The pre-tune results were with all of the hardware installed running the factory tune.

These are the results from the initial tune. We did not have much time to get the tune in place. We also did some fine tuning later on a test rally course. We'll be fine tuning it further after this rally race is complete.

http://s28.postimg.org/jhb1xi7p9/GT8...Dyno_Graph.jpg

What really impressed us was the 75+ lb.-ft. torque gain in the dip around 4200 rpm. With a tune, the nameless header really shines!

I'm sure it's excessively expensive, but I know there have been several people on here looking for slightly taller, long travel suspension.

acro 09-25-2014 01:16 AM

Wow the torque gains are ridiculous :)

Fizz 09-25-2014 01:26 AM

Just curious, are the gains shown on the dyno typical of what people would get with a nameless header + tune?

M23 09-25-2014 02:51 AM

Wow. Those cliffs look 1000x steeper than pikes peak. Not to mention much narrower and much more big boulders and rocks that are very close to the road. This makes pikes peak look like disneyland. Amazing.

Besides the extra ride height it looks like they trimmed off the lower portion of the rear bumper behind the rear wheels. Which is probably a good idea; this past weekend I had a co-driver at a RallyCross and he attempted to remove part of the rear bumper by tagging a berm with it. :mad0259:

They look like BOS dampers maybe, they are one of the few I'm aware of where the hose connects at the top. $$$$

The car runs a Barattec suspension, made in Argentina. This suspension is produced by Team Barattero, a rally racing developer.

I really don't have enough data on the nameless header to declare these results typical. The Nameless Performance dyno charts do show massive torque gains in the same area and seem to support the results.

The exhaust on the rally car is not typical of a street driven car in that the exhaust is only the header with a straight pipe -- nearly 0 restrictions. As restrictions in the exhaust are added, I would expect the gains to reduce a bit, but I believe you can still expect a huge torque gain right in the stock torque dip area, and the torque/power gains and curves to be similar throughout the power band.

Updated race standings, added additional photos and videos.

Check out the latest video - it's a hill climb stage on dirt/gravel that begins at 11,000ft. and climbs to 13,500ft.! Serious unprotected drop-offs everywhere!

One question what grade oil is he running and does he use a oil cooler

He ran this rally without an oil cooler, but an oil cooler was planned -- just ran out of time prepping for this rally. Fortunately, the outside temps were on the cool side.

These engines are pretty hard on oil, and that was a big concern knowing the car would be running @7000+ rpm for extended periods of time.

He is running Motul 300V 5w30, and has changed the oil after each race day.

The stock throttle body is plenty big for this motor. I believe the larger throttle body results in a reduction of throttle resolution with no power gain.

Really curious to see pics of their suspension setup and any reinforcement / shielding they added under or around the car.

Big ups for taking the 86 to new stomping grounds and absolutely killing it like a bozz!

Chill 12-05-2014 12:10 PM

WOW this is exciting. What were changes to the suspensions? Heavy duty shocks and a small lift? Did he try to keep it close to stock while still changing small parts to cope with the rally stage? Any other mods beside the tune?

I'm watching this and feeling ashamed that I don't even dare take my car out on a little snow... :(
