FR-S Steel and Argento are not the same color (side-by-side pics)

I was surprised to discover at the Scion dealer last night that the 2014 Argento color is not the same as the 2015 Steel. This may be common knowledge, but most things I've read have mentioned it being a color rename and not a new shade. I mention this in case it's helpful to soon-to-be-FR-S-owners that may be lurking around these forums (like me!)

Here are two photos of a 2014 and 2015 side-by-side, you can tell the year by the antenna (sharkfin for 2015). My apologies that they're not the highest quality photos.

The top photo is (left to right): 2015 Steel, 2014 Argento, 2015 Halo
The bottom photo is (left to right): 2015 Halo, 2014 Argent, 2015 Steel

I like the Argento more!

Thanks for snapping some photos for us.

What I read was a colour "replacement" so I did expect it be different but not that radically different!
Makes me a bit nervous when they change to a similar colour after only one or two years as it sometimes means they found a problem with the original paint.
Had an 08 Lancer GTS in the dark blue. After the first 6 months the paint started disappearing from the sides. Took it in and they wouldn't do a thing because "it is a design flaw". All the other colours stood up OK. Then they coincidentally changed to a slightly lighter blue for 2009.

Well, my hunch is that Steel is the same as Ice Silver Metallic on the BRZ.. which is also a color for the new 2015 WRX. By sharing it across three models (FR-S, BRZ, WRX) Subaru can save some costs rather than having two separate shades of silver to maintain. I assume the FR-S' are sprayed in the same factory as the BRZ.

On the upside, Argento is now a limited edition color. :)

looks like silver, and dark silver to me lol

Ya the "rare" colour hierarchy changes on a pretty regular basis doesn't it!
Your hunch makes a lot of sense and as I have never seen any complaints about paint quality (beyond the "my paint isn't as good as a $300,000 car but should be" crowd) with the Argento that is the likely scenario.

I remember a day long, LONG ago when silver was pretty much restricted to high end german cars! If you saw a North American car in silver the paint was almost always half peeled off (i.e. 1976 Cordoba, 1970 Maverick)
Now parking lots are a sea of silver, grey or black.
Noticed in the parking lot a work the other day that of the 50 or so cars mine was the ONLY one not among the big three colours. Was gonna take a picture to title "one of these things is not like the others" but shift ended and they all left!

I thought I noticed something funny about the silver car at the dealership today. I much prefer the newer, darker color.

8R6 09-23-2014 07:55 PM

as an FYI, toyota doesn't rename colors. if it's a new/different name, it's a new/different paint code. some are verrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyy close, but still a different paint code. at my old job awhile back, one of the things i had to do was manage the toyota color library.

Ice Silver Metallic is a great color, I like how it almost looks blue in certain lighting

It's way better than the plain boring silver they used before

Obja 09-23-2014 10:26 PM

seeing so many new ones together just makes me cream my pants

FiRStsc10n 09-23-2014 10:46 PM

need to see pic of Argento beside a Steel beside a Silver Ignition.. so many silvers.

Texas BRZ 09-23-2014 11:23 PM

I like the new Steel exterior. Looks a bit darker to me as well.

Design flaw? Why doesn't Mitsubishi just get out of the US car market already?

They are! At least in Canada not sure about States no more Eclipse and Gallant as of 2008 and no more Evo as of 2015. All they want to sell are econo box Lancer pretenders and SUVs

No matter what it looks like in person, I have a hard time thinking it's as cool as Silver Ignition...but I may be biased!

Silver has always been boring, in my opinion. They all look the same out on the road, especially when they aren't around any other silver cars.

Dake 09-25-2014 05:44 PM

I assumed it was different but hadn't given it much thought - I like the Steel better, looks deeper.

I felt the same way until I saw Silver ignition, but my favorite will always be blue ribbon metallic.

Today I purchased my FR-S, series 10 with 24 miles on it. Seems it sat on the dealer's lot overpriced for almost a year before they steeply discounted it.

I took some pictures of the silver ignition next to the new steel (2015) color. It seems to me the silver ignition color is a little darker and has a little more depth, the Steel is a little brighter and more metallic (where the ignitions seems more pearlescent).

I firmly believe car colors should be seen in person, but for the sake of completeness, here are the pictures.

First picture: the series 10 is parked in the middle between two cars in Steel.

Second and third pictures: series 10 on the left, steel on the right.

Veloist 09-28-2014 11:09 PM

The dealership you took the side-by-side picture...yeah...that's my second home.

My dad's been working there since 1995, when I was only 2 years old. That's pretty much why I am into cars, more specifically Toyotas.

Congrats on your purchase though, enjoy it!
