Senior Driving

I'm a 68yo senior now driving a Chrysler 200S. I was driving a 2005 Crossfire SRT, but sold it with only 5K on it. Ever since I sold it, I miss driving the car. I'm thinking of buying a BRZ, but think I may be too old for a sports car, what do you guys think.

bee-jay 09-15-2014 02:48 PM

as long as you can get the old bones in and out, you're never too old.

tahdizzle 09-15-2014 02:55 PM

You sold a SRT6 crossfire with only 5k on the odometer?

I am not a fan of the crossfire, but the srt6 are pretty damn rare.

As far as the brz is concerned, if you are comfortable getting in and out of it I think you would enjoy the feel. It doesn't pull in a straight line, but it makes me smile :)

Speed2th 09-15-2014 02:59 PM

it is hard to get in and out of the seats in my opinion because it is too low and lumbar support is too well. but i think there are many senior members here.

murdoc 09-15-2014 03:02 PM

It would be a very sad world if old guys couldn't have sports cars.

I think the car will be ok if you can see and hear fine, and it's not going to put you in a bad place financially (especially if you are fixed income.)

The car isn't insanely hard to get into and out of, except for a probable lower seating position than your Chrysler. The ride will be harsher and the seats firmer, so if you have arthritis or the like then I'd make sure to get a good test drive. The car also has the option of a very good torque converter automatic transmission if you have bad knees.

But as far as how you think people will see you...I think you're old enough to do what you want.

Dude - pop a Viagra, drink an espresso, jump in and hammer it!

x1UP 09-15-2014 03:13 PM

Def get one. Although, I will say what others have said and say that the BRZ is a bit hard to get in and out of. Not overly hard, but enough to absolutely notice it.

SkAsphalt 09-15-2014 03:13 PM

Considering people drive every other sports car at your age or beyond, why not? Corvettes, Porsches', etc. Heck, most people cannot afford a sports car until later on in life so it makes complete sense.

The BRZ is great, a little rattly, but nice.

Never too old to enjoy driving BRZ ....
If you love to drive a 'real' good handling sport car,
if you have no trouble getting in and out of low seating sport car,
Go get BRZ now!

Extreme86 09-15-2014 03:17 PM

Go for it!!! In my 60's and you are only a couple of years ahead of me. 86s are FUN! + great handling RWD cars. Driving the twisties gets the adrenalin flowing!!! Power comes on at a high RPMs though. A '15 WRX might be more practical for you if you have to carry passengers...just as fun IMO and mo power...(when wifey lets me drive it!) After 2 years of BRZ ownership, I have no desire to get rid of it at all. It's a keeper! Do a test drive. Dittos...if getting in&out is not an issue, you'll probably love it.

I know an old chap who has owned Ferraris and other exotics, now daily drives an FR-S and he couldn't be happier.

FLYFISHR 09-15-2014 03:38 PM

62 and LOVING IT! As far as getting in and out of it "it's a use it or lose it" I look at the climbing in and out as a way to keep all the parts in working order and the driving a way to get my heart rate up and the adrenaline flowing.

geb2391 09-15-2014 03:54 PM

Had mine since I was 62 Love it. Go for it!!!!

dbrandt01 09-15-2014 03:55 PM

My father is 63 and is like a child in my car. He absolutely loves it, but its harder for him to get in and out of it with a bad back.

How are your knees and lower back? Sorry for the personal questions but for me this will ultimately be the limiting factor. Once in or out of the car all is well but climbing out is a task for the reasonably fit. Bad knees or back issues would make routine driving of this car difficult.

The actual driving position is delightful, possibly the best of any car I've driven and that's saying something.

The driving experience is pure fun. You can play with this car pretty much forever and never get bored. If acceleration is important to you then a turbo or mechanical supercharger is available to fix that. I like the low power at the moment.

If you buy a 2015 then it is probably perfect right out of the box. Once you get tired of the stock rubber then fit better tires but I'd keep the Primacy's for a while doing this over. They aren't bad, quite a high quality tire even just inadequate to restrain this chassis which is the point I expect.

My 2013 required Bilstein shocks all round to deliver appropriately controlled suspension and be aware that the ride is brutal, just not as brutal as say a Cayman.

Former boss is 83, and he has a Ferrari 360 that he drives. Never too old.

Ursam 09-15-2014 08:47 PM

I'm 63 and love my BRZ. I have a bad back, but I find the seats are great: just the right amount of lumbar support, and very supportive around the neck.

But yes, it can be challenging to get out of. I have learned a couple of tricks. First, its a lot easier to get out of the car if you can get the door opened all the way. And being a 2-door coupe, these doors are fairly long. So I look for a parking place that gives me plenty of space to open the door. Second, push down and brace yourself on the lower door frame as you get out; that takes the pressure off your back and knees.

Try getting in and out of the car first, I've had coworkers in their 50s having trouble getting out of my car.

zc06_kisstherain 09-16-2014 03:09 PM

Men never get old for any car. go for it!

I'm sure there are people in their twentys that would have a hard time getting out of our car. But that shouldn't be a factor in stopping us old farts from having fun.

krayzie 09-16-2014 04:04 PM

My mom is 62 and have no problems getting in and out of the car daily.

JoonPrime 09-16-2014 05:03 PM

the fact youre that old and can even type on these forums, tells me youre not too old for this car. my parents are 50 and can barley turn on a t.v, now THEY are too old for this car :P

BRZnut 09-16-2014 08:47 PM

Never too old. Only issue is that it takes a slight amount of effort to get in and out, but once inside, its very comfortable and feels very natural to drive. I've never noticed and muscle/ leg/ or back fatigue or pain with driving..and I've been in the car 12 hrs straight.

Fish Eagle 09-17-2014 03:37 AM

I'm over 60. I love my SC 86, and I track it as often as I can.

If you can get in and out OK, then go for it and enjoy!!

Timmy_Jones 09-17-2014 09:36 AM

All ages should apply

g e 09-17-2014 11:07 AM

I turn 60 in December and got my 2013 limited brz nov 2013. Getting in seems to be easier than getting out....

But I wonder if that is because I hate to get out of it!
