TWINCHARGED (Supercharged & Turbocharged) Widebody "WTF-86" 86/FRS *MASSIVE* build :D

So I think I previously had a build thread on here but I guess you could say things got pretty serious :P

http://i.imgur.com/zpZL6bN.gif

If you want to see the tiny details, the full build is here: https://www.facebook.com/streetfx86

Anyways, I will skip the boring stuff and get up to speed...

Was this (stock):

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=2894

Then this (trd):

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=2889

Then we stuck an AVO turbo kit on it, which made the car feel like it should have from stock:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=2900

Made this possible on semi slicks:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=2863

Fitted AP racing brakes front and rear:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=2899

Then the real fun started:

http://www.streetfx.com.au/galleries/86/rb3.jpg

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3000

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3043

Not being happy to be like everyone else, we moulded the kit into the body:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3046

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3067

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3065

Made some custom (functional) BRZ fender vents:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3040

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3035

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3239

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3299

Also didn't like the way the RB kit ditches the pretty rear fog light, so we moulded that in too:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3664

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3756

Added a Seibon hood (which we painted, as you will see later):

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...25775974_n.jpg

After the car was painted, the 'original' stock colour, I decided I didn't like it.. I probably should have thought of this first:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3554

The toys meeting for the first time:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3551

Got some new rims:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/uploads/...1390215479.jpg

Choosing new color:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3509

With colour chosen, reassembly began:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3864

You can see the blue pearl in the bright white paint in this pic.. It's very noticeable in the sun - pics don't really do it justice:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3865

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3872

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3874

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3878

Lip, skirts and diffuser is painted in the 'Tornado Grey' metallic.. Inspired by the two tone white/grey of my R35 GTR.

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3881

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3882

Body was completed.. :

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3891

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3897

You can really see the blue pearl coming out in this pic:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3906

I suppose you will be happy to know that all the while the body was being done, the spare FA20 engine was undergoing an overhaul also:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3902

Sleeved, forged pistons, rods, decompressed:

http://www.brzforums.com.au/index.ph...attach_id=3903

Kalen from Forged Performance built us an exhaust manifold (twice, because of clearance issues with the ATI pulley, but that is something I don't think either of us want to talk about LOL):

I will be updating the facebook page over the next week, so for full updates, follow it here:

WTF 09-12-2014 10:12 AM

Update: 10-Sep-2014:

Bullet superchargers has tracked down the big S5-335 monster supercharger, Kalen from Forged Performance has finished our manifold, and everything is now bolted together, ready to be dropped in.. 999 Automotive hooked us up some Whiteline bits, and Car mods Australia sourced us some Cusco suspension parts..

Here is the new supercharger:

http://www.streetfx.com.au/cms/wp-co.../01/big-sc.jpg

Much bigger than the standard Sprintex 150:

http://www.streetfx.com.au/cms/wp-co...01/engine3.jpg

Exhaust manifold by Forged Performance is beautiful!

http://www.streetfx.com.au/cms/wp-co...ani-edited.jpg

Clearance with the aftermarket crank pulley (we are running an ATI pulley which resulted in Kalen from FP having to make a whole new exhaust manifold in 4 days):

http://www.streetfx.com.au/cms/wp-co...manifold-2.jpg

Dummy engine with the manifold:

http://www.streetfx.com.au/cms/wp-co...-manifold3.jpg

Meanwhile back up in Brisbane, 999 Automotive supplied a whole catalogue of Whiteline suspension parts, and Car Mods Australia gave us a great deal on some Cusco arms. We also sourced some RacerX front LCA and rear UCA's to get maximum adjustment out of the beast:

WTF 09-12-2014 10:14 AM

Next we got ready for the really exciting part... Everything was ready to put together the engine at GT Auto Garage!

Now we are in the middle of installing a Forged Performance twincharged kit, utilising a monster S5/335 Sprintex blower, and a GTX hybrid turbo.

Huge thanks to Kalen from Forged Performance for his insane amount of hard work to get us where we are on the twin charge.

GT Auto Garage have got the old engine ready to be dropped out on Monday, then we hope to have it running within the next week.

Updates to follow :)

One of the few RB kits that looks like the extra track width will actually be used! Love the molded look too, much more classy. If that's even possible with a RB twin.

wparsons 09-12-2014 11:30 AM

How are you expecting the twin screw to flow more air than it already is at a given RPM? Pressurizing the air before it gets to the blower won't make it flow more air...

Synack 09-12-2014 11:40 AM

Interested to see how this works. Love the car and I'm sure this is a $75,000 car by now (with labor). Just more interested to see if a twincharged setup will work because I've seen a lot fail, and a lot not make good power.

Yes it does.

That's what "compound boost" is all about. It multiplies whatever is fed to it.

Rather than trying to explain from scratch, here's something prepared earlier, from Wikipedia: "compounded boost is always produced as the pressure ratios of the two compressors are multiplied, not added. In other words, if a turbocharger which produced 10 psi (0.7 bar) (pressure ratio = 1.7) alone blew into a supercharger which also produced 10psi alone, the resultant manifold pressure would be 27 psi (1.9 bar) (PR=2.8) rather than 20 psi (1.4 bar) (PR=2.3). This form of series twincharging allows for the production of boost pressures that would otherwise be unachievable with other compressor arrangements and would be inefficient."

About double that figure by now :S

I stopped counting when it got to six figures.. It just gets depressing.. :brokenheart:

I could make more power with just the turbo. The twin-charger is mostly because I have never had a supercharged car before and felt like being different. On top of this, I hated how ugly the engine bays are standard, so I figured if I cover the top of that boxer thing with a big supercharger it helps :)

Other options were VR38 (my R35 GTR made me fall in love with the VR38), or a V10 from an M5, though both those options were getting into unknown territories with fitment and would have had big complications with engine management.

I am not sure how well it will go yet, but we will see. If nothing else, it is a fun project, and if it causes us any grief we will go back to plain turbo eventually.. Time will tell :)

Thanks for the kind words guys :)

For the short sighted folk that seem to be bickering and claiming that twincharging with a positive displacement blower wont work - you really might need to repeat physics at school :)

I was linked to people arguing that this wont work, on facebook.. While you might mean well - your assumptions and basic understanding of the physics behind this are flawed. I can understand it is a difficult concept to understand, but you can easily simplify it. Dont over think and over complicate things!

(See attachments for people's fb arguing over it)

Those who say that the 'blower will only put out a set flow for a set rpm', that is not the case if the input pressure increases - eg if you go where the atmospheric pressure is higher or lower - the SC will compress whatever air is given to it.

If you increase the atmospheric pressure, the blower will multiply *whatever* is fed into it.

If you feed it 10psi above atmospheric pressure, and the blower is set to compress 10psi, then you will get:

Turbo:
10/14.7psi = 0.7 pressure ratio + atmospheric = 1.7x

Supercharger:
10/14.7psi = 0.7 pressure ratio + atmospheric = 1.7x

1.7x1.7 = 2.89 - 1 atmosphere = 1.89x atmospheric pressure = 27.8psi when 10psi is fed into a 10psi blower.

I can understand what Wes is *trying* to say, but in short, he is plain wrong.

A turbo is creating positive pressure on the SC, just the same as it creates positive pressure on the engine when the valves are open - the supercharger just re-compresses the already compressed air. Even if you dont want to take my word for it, there are HUNDREDS of people that have done this before me, there are even FACTORY CARS and RALLY TEAM CARS that are twin charged.

When he says it 'offers no benefits', that's quite simply a silly thing to say. This large turbo would take til 4000+ rpm to spool to 25psi normally, with the sc, we will see full boost at half that! It will produce boost from IDLE.

It is true that a straight turbo will be FAR simpler, FAR cheaper and lighter, AND a straight turbo has potential to more efficiently make peak power. BUT this is being built to meet what *I* want, not to meet what you 'speculate', with no proof aside from hearsay and misinterpreting other people's research.

Part of the reason for this build is to NOT be practical, to deliberately do something different and eye catching for promotional purposes and to showcase our company and our friend's companies who helped develop this setup.

Your misinterpreted research is all well and good, but we have actually DONE it (check Forged Performance's JET86 build thread), we have not just read about it.. Practical real world results trump incorrectly interpreted internet research.

I can show you a video of the car with TWO boost gauges, one after the turbo and one after the supercharger.. I will run 9psi or so out of the turbo, and a 10psi pulley on the supercharger and you will see a 25psi manifold pressure - will THAT make those who doubt this project reconsider, or will they just go quiet and not admit defeat.. I am interested to see their reaction..

:)

Here is some literature for the naysayers..

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twincharger"]Twincharger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

After you have spent some time reading the wikipedia entry, rethink your approach, and consider that BOOST is merely a measure of how much air is NOT getting into the engine.. If it were as you claim, then a turbocharger wouldnt work either.. All a turbo is doing is increasing the effective atmospheric pressure before the throttle body..

@WTF did you plastidip your emblems or paint? or did you buy them from grazio & co? please let me know

s2d4 09-14-2014 11:41 AM

The physics part you stated is describing what happens when you compound boost. The one that is more applicable is limit of compression, I.e. phase change to liquid under compression and you are no where near it.
Arguing on the internet over physics never ends well, the majority of people are dumbasses.

Well unless we intend to boost to 3000psi, I think we are fine about keeping the air as a gas :D

And yes, it's like hitting head against a brick wall, people just seem to be all too quick to mock what they don't understand. Even showing practical examples of it ACTUALLY working don't seem to be enough to disprove their internet research.. *shakes head*
