Sorry but I'm a girl....dumb with cars.

The ass that sold me my FR-S led me to believe that the navigation just needed to be "updated" to work. When I called to make the appointment for this, they told me it was going to cost $1200. GTFO! There HAS to be a way to just upgrade this myself. I'm pretty tech savvy so I can follow instructions and figure it out. I just don't know where to start or what to search for. What do I need?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Please be kind...I'm sorry but I know nothing about this stuff.
Thanks in advance!
:thanks:

Sounds like you have the base head unit. To get navigation on the built in screen you have to have the upgraded head unit (option)OR put a aftermarket one in yourself.

But consider this...I have the base head unit as well and can get AUDIO (not visual, on screen turn by turn) navigation when i use the Bluetooth streaming and use my smartphone's navigation. It's a good compromise if you don't want to buy a aftermarket unit.

As far as "upgrading" your BASE unit to get turn by turn navigation on the screen... I don't think that's possible and sounds like u were misled by the salesman.

What's being a chick have to do with anything? :sigh:

I would personally go aftermarket. I've seen numerous complaints both on the "upgraded" unit as well as the standard. Probably cheaper to go aftermarket, anyways.

KatieK118 09-11-2014 10:55 PM

Well the unit that is on the car has a button that says "map" and if i press it, it says "BeSpoke Premium Audio is not installed"
If there's a map button, shouldn't there be a way to be able to use the map?

Danklvr 09-11-2014 10:55 PM

all you need is the nav module -NAV UNIT pt296-00140, and brackets or tape or something to secure the nav module to h/u..
look on ebay, or the classified section, sometimes you can get the nav box cheap if someone replaces the h/u..
i think i got mine for about $250

So what's the problem? do you have the factory Navi and it's not working properly? or so you have the base stereo w/o a navi screen? Isn't the base head unit just a few buttons while the navi unit an actual screen?

Edit: I have no idea what this bespoke thing is... I guess FRS has a navi-looking HU now?

Look at your window sticker, if it says it should have navi, then it should have navi. Else, it doesn't have it.

KatieK118 09-11-2014 10:56 PM

haha no disrespect. I just mean that I fit the stereotype of being a girl that knows nothing about cars.

Danklvr 09-11-2014 11:12 PM

Without paying the navi-up charge, the stock h/u is "nav ready" has map button, needs nav module installed..

This is the model number I guess?

And this is what it says when I press the "map" button.

mush 09-11-2014 11:16 PM

MOST people know jack shit about cars. If you say you're tech savvy enough, now you have instructions with the parts you need. Get this done and you'd have done something that most guys haven't done either! The you can tell that stereotype to go fuck itself.
mush has also provided a more suitable solution as well. These nav units kinda suck to begin with, but looks better than the BRZ one. Having an in-dash gps is nice, but the phone gos has far more utility.

KatieK118 09-11-2014 11:18 PM

I've been using my phone with the bluetooth, but it seems like every time I'm just about to get lost, I get a phone call so the map is disabled temporarily. I HATE using my phone for Nav though. My old car had Nav so I'm used to the on-screen map and I hate using my phone for it. Just a personal preference.

N1rve 09-11-2014 11:19 PM

You need this module for navigation to work

KatieK118 09-11-2014 11:23 PM

dafuq?! That salesman was a real asshole! He basically told me they needed to put a chip in the stereo (the way i understood it, an SD card that contained the "upgrade" to make the Nav work) and that was it.

Its how you get a forum full of car guys to trip over each other trying to help.

In a AE86 FB group I'm in a simple post by a girl gets like 200 comments in under an hour. lol

KatieK118 09-11-2014 11:27 PM

haha that was the tactic I was using, and the results I was hoping for ;-)

The chip is a module. Along with a GPS Antenna and a few other nuts and bolts.

Welcome to the forums ;)

DC2R 09-12-2014 12:00 AM

Yes you need the upgrade kit which has expansion box, connectors, brackets, and GPS module

Your salesman is either a) a ****head or b) stupid. If it's a), probably have to take your father, boyfriend, or some male friend with you to get him to stop being an asshat. If it's b), I'd recommend speaking to a different rep.

But the advice people offered here is correct - you need the little nav unit that plugs into the back of the headunit.

GT/86 09-12-2014 12:39 AM

Hi Katie Salesman they know noting about cars the only thing they know is to lie to the customers and sale you the car. That's the only thing they know best. and they are also expert at screwing people around. My brother is a salesman at a Nissan Dealer and he knows noting about cars lol Next time you buy a car you need to do a research before you buy. :-) Is nice to have you Aboard

Katie is attractive and likely has a sweet accent, that is all. :)

Dezoris 09-12-2014 12:57 AM

Ask for help from local FRS owners, chances are you will have 20 dudes at your place in an hour. Not only will you have working NAV, but flowers, chocolates, weight lifting competition and likely save the date cards printed.

Katie admits to being tactical. What if it's really Kyle?

Maybe I'll try this when it's time to install my camber plates. "Dumb girl needs help adjusting her strut."

Canibalistik 09-12-2014 01:30 AM

You weren't mislead Katie, you were mis-informed. You don't have to change your head unit, you just didn't get the BeSpoke Audio upgrade, which includes the premium Nav. and a bunch of other goodies. It IS about 1200.00 installed at the dealership...its not a new unit, its just an additional unit that more or less bolts up with the stock unit. Its about the size of a clutch purse. It has to be installed, then a flash drive update on the software side usually needs done. It also requires a code for all updates...somewhere around 160.00, however, it being a new vehicle you shouldn't really require the updates if you're going to upgrade.

Honestly, you get yourself a nice dual-den head unti with nav. and a touch screen...like a Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. You're still going to be looking in the range of 1000.00, ALSO a lot more aggravation when you consider running the wires and mounting the GPS antenna.

I like the phone comment...I use mine for the GPS also.

I have the same head unit you do, and I work for Toyota as a tech for the last 10+ years. I'm not forking the money over for it either...not even with my employee discounts...

I wrote an FAQ with part numbers on how I did it: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49003

but that ebay link someone posted up basically has all the stuff you need in one kit. And that stuff about being a stereotypical girl is dumb. 99% of guys don't know jack shit about cars (aka this forum), but love acting like they do...

when buying a used car and the seller mentions easy and quick fixes to problems you should always ask why they haven't done it themselves if it's so easy... !

If Katie is like my niece of the same age group all you young punks will be tripping over your tongues when she's around. It's fun to watch.

@KATie - I'd skip the upgrade and start looking at a better head unit. But then again I haven't done the research to know the cost implications. But $1200 to add nav capability sounds like someone's hitting the crack pipe pretty hard to me. I skipped it, but I don't use nav much and my phone via bluetooth works for me. But then again, I'm not a social butterfly so I don't interrupted much while driving.

Chop Shop 09-12-2014 05:39 AM

I bought the same head unit you got there with the Nav Module from Ant in the marketplace area and installed it in about ten minutes. Really easy. Since you already have the head unit it shouldn't cost you about the 570 I paid.

dnieves 09-12-2014 07:00 AM

syntax error on the salesman's part:

he meant Upgraded-> map module has to be purchased and physically plugged in for GPS to work

Updated->you already have the map module installed but the Points Of Interest and roads needed to be made more recent (this is done via USB but there's no info on when and how much it'll cost yet)
