I like the front, but I wouldn't buy one. Not that I know the specs yet, but still. Now a mazdaspeed coupe MX-5...

thill 09-03-2014 10:48 PM

The car is gorgeous. Easily the best looking MX-5 to date for me and Autoblog is reporting that the car should come in around 2200lbs.. Can't wait!

Am I the only one pissed about the stupid antenna? It's a sticking point with the twins for a lot and it's almost 2015; we can do away with the damn long ugly sticks hanging off of sleek cool cars already. Sheesh.

I don't notice antennas at all, on our cars, or any other model.

I didn't think it was a huge deal until I saw a BRZ with a sharkfin. What a difference it makes.

Levi 09-04-2014 07:32 AM

If Mazda had an equivalent to the GT86, something like MX-5 Coupé MPS, Mazda without doubt, even though I like boxer engines.

krayzie 09-04-2014 08:31 AM

4 lug wheels and solid rear discs with 195/50/R16 tires, seems like the output of the engine could be similar to the old car.

Most sedans (my 2012 Corolla for example) have it integrated into the rear windshield. Why not my FR-S Toyota!? Also I miss my side view mirror defrosters.

I see F Type in the rear 3/4 and trunk/bumper, BRZ in the front head on angle, E85 Z4 in the sills and rear arches, S2000 in the front 3/4 view where the windshield is...

While researching the Twins prior to deciding to buy I found a very interesting statement. Thought it was an odd thing to say at the time but it did stick in my mind and makes more sense now.
Don't remember exactly which one of the 100 or so sites, blogs and owner comments pages I read that it was on but it went something like this:
"the target demographic for these cars is well know to show great passion for a new vehicle at first but can be easily distracted by the next shiny thing too come out. It is expected that these cars will be able to be bought used very cheaply in 3 or 4 years when something new comes along"

So far we have seen a reasonably large exodus from Twins ownership when the 15 WRX came out (at least one possibly two people in the few profiles above on this thread alone) and I suspect a bunch more will head over to the new Miata.

This is in absolutely no way a criticism of anybody's' choice (both the WRX and the Miata were on my own short list when I was shopping) but I did find it very interesting that the person that made that comment was so incredibly insightful and called it so well!

parkthetiger 09-04-2014 06:48 PM

The car looks great, but I'm going to assume that at least for the usdm market that a few pounds will be added to the supposed ~2200 lbs curb weight because of safety standards.

I'm also curious what they're going to do with the engine seeing that the petrol skyactiv engines appear to be boost unfriendly. I would hope that Mazda would already conclude by now that there will be a strong aftermarket following for the ND Miata and companies like Flyin Miata and Jackson Racing would jump on the opportunity to make FI kits for the next gen and maybe tinker with the engine with these things in mind.

LeeMaster 09-04-2014 08:09 PM

It finally took the Miata 15 years to evolve into the S2K look-alike

it doesnt really look like an s2000 and i dont know why you would think a company would copy a car they put out of commission years ago

hmong337 09-04-2014 10:46 PM

It's nice cuz it's new. But the rear is disturbingly ugly. The front isn't bad. The main thing though, it doesn't look as girly as the older models. They really should consider making a full on hardtop for this car.

I like it alot. Very attractive.

civdaddy 09-06-2014 02:36 PM

The looks are in without a doubt the best looking mx5 yet. And for people wondering what the power output will be..

[ame]https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H_iRcpJ1Z1U[/ame]

Small skyactiv turbo anyone?

This car is going to be amazing.

krayzie 09-06-2014 06:05 PM

Probably just the 2.0L Skyactiv-G.

It sure does sound like a turbo induction sound, doesn't it?
if it comes with a small turbo changing the exhaust and tune should make a drastic change in performance :D

makesdrivingfunagain 09-06-2014 06:18 PM

Great looking car, light and a pure sports car!

Do they have any horsepower data yet? I wasn't sure how much it cost? I thought it was around 30K

xwd 09-09-2014 02:32 PM

I like the looks of it even if it does look a little like a Z4. I've read rumors it will have both a 1.6L and 2L engines available.

krayzie 09-09-2014 04:51 PM

That engine in the picture (from the launch show car) is probably a run of the mill Skyactiv, look at the oil cap it's raised up for use with an engine cover. Looks ridiculous lol!

I'm thinking the hoodline of this Miata would be higher than the twins. No thanks I'm keeping the BRZ.

Ubersuber 09-09-2014 08:13 PM

JV with FIAT Group, should produce an interesting car both sides of the Atlantic (and Pacific of course).

It was intended to use the FIAT Group four cylinder multi air but that seems to have been abandoned. The two companies worked together on the body and suspension designs according to rumours.

BRZ will still be the preferred car until Mazda makes a coupe version of the MX5 which they keep saying they will and then don't.

I imagine more will jump ship for the 15' Mustang, 16' Camaro, 16' Focus RS, 16' Z-car, 16' Infinity Q60 (G37), and others since it seems auto makers just realized people want performance oriented cars, not just Camry's and F150's.

PeterFRS 09-09-2014 10:09 PM

^ this.

and Honda thinking...um......shit..

An automotive history lesson: This is a cyclic thing. Every decade or so automakers have this great revelation that consumers want exciting drivers cars. It will pass in due time. Camry and F150 type vehicles will always be in demand though.

I think the trick is to find a car that you enjoy in absolute, and not relative, terms. For example, I've got a MK6 GTI, and when the MK7 GTI (and Focus ST and WRX) came out, a bunch of owners jumped ship. I thought about it briefly, but realized I'm happy with the MK6 for how I use it. I don't doubt the MK7 might be better in every single way by comparison, but the MK6 is a car I'm perfectly content with. No need to chase every shiny new thing that comes along.

I'm at the same point with my FR-S. I'm sure better cars will come along (whether it's the ND Miata or 2016 FR-S), but that doesn't change the fact that the current FR-S is a phenomenal car that's done amazingly well the way I use it (90% daily, 10% track).

The fact that something newer and more shiny comes along doesn't change the nature of what you already have in hand.

It definitely looks as though the Miata has a lower hoodline than the BRZ.

Not sure why that would be a determining factory in buying a car though?

Grew up with Hondas of the late 80's and early 90's, very fond of the visibility and low driving position of those cars.

Hot Lava 09-10-2014 11:30 PM

Meh otta. Too small to offer any practical cargo space, boring body design.

Teseo 09-11-2014 12:37 AM

Miata will have the stigma of be a girly car.
