DOT Proposes Mandating Cars Broadcast Location, Direction and Speed

Since I have no doubt where this would go, my answer would be "fuck off".

DOT Proposes Mandating Cars Broadcast Location, Direction and Speed

"What NHTSA envisions mandating will not control people's cars but create a uniform communication system built into all vehicles that will give automobile manufacturers the opportunity to equip their products with warning systems that alert drivers to potential accidents — such as one that might be caused by cross traffic at a blind intersection."

Money shot: "But NHTSA does not envision that the use of this type of technology will stop there."

This is inevitable which makes me question my constant spending on anything car related. If say a 2018 FR-S comes with this annoying piece of tech there will at least be several low mileage pre 2018 used options :). I really can't imagine taking a left in front of someone at my determined speed and have the system beep and yell at me because it thinks I won't make it assuming grandma turning speed.

Downhill from here folks

I could live with a system like that, but we both know it will go far beyond that.

I work for one of the top auto parts manufacturers/technology developers that specializes in OEM safety devices. There are not many cars made that don't have SOMTHING we make in the (oddly enough the Twins are one of them that doesn't) We have one whole division working on nothing but automated driving systems. Although I am not in that division (I would not be driving a humble FRS if I was) they do release updates from time to time. The vehicle technology has been around for a while now and commercial aircraft have been using it for decades.
BUT...
One of the requirements for any such system to work would be a set broadcast system that is the same everyplace. Since this involves so many governments to agree I don't expect to see anything in reality by 2018!

Oh and it would not "beep to yell at you" if there was a car coming it would not let your car move at all! And we think we have nannies in the car NOW!!!!!!

I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.

Meet George Jettson........

I can deal with something that beeps when someone is flying through the intersection at high speed that I can't see, and something that beeps when I'm very close to someone, but that's about it. Parking sensors for example are annoying as hell, because they are always beeping; you have to get pretty close to other cars/objects when you park. That defeats the point, the beep is supposed to be a warning that you're cutting it close.

You just say that because you know they are listening.

Fuck Skynet.

wrxgoose 08-27-2014 03:04 PM

i can see the good and the bad in this. i feel that it should always record, but ONLY send data in the case of an accident.

Tt3Sheppard 08-27-2014 03:07 PM

I can see the abuse where your speed has been transmitted to a cop 5 miles down the road where he will be waiting for you to give you a ticket. :)

I'm hoping I will be close to retirement when driving is gone, will be good to know I enjoyed its last moments in history.

vobla6.0 08-27-2014 03:46 PM

First no Skylines and now this?....DOT is a bitch.

dem00n 08-27-2014 04:34 PM

Nah.

Everyone speeds in New York, even the cops. Won't have much effect on anything besides accidents.

In some places of New York, there are radars that always know the speeds on the highways. People break the law all the time in the area, yet no one gets a ticket unless they tagged by a cop with a radar gun and pulled over.

The last time I was in upstate NY, I realized that the traffic was moving at 85mph in the right lane when the signs said 55. Better keep paying those cops well, else they gonna come for you.

Norcal is actually pretty tame, most people follow the 65mph limits but everyone ignores the 25, 30, 35, 45, 50, and 55 signs.

Never give up your freedoms.

They are impossible to get back.

vobla6.0 08-27-2014 05:09 PM

Virginia would be the worst place to live in if this passes.

AH SHIT I never thought of that!
Better treat your cars nice and /or shine up your plasma rifle.

Gunman 08-27-2014 06:40 PM

This is why we have haXorS.

tahdizzle 08-27-2014 07:07 PM

Just drive backwards. Ferris Bueller was no idiot.

VacantSky 08-28-2014 07:55 AM

I wouldn't sweat it, we could do some awareness challenge to raise money for the playstation hackers to hack the system and make the cops chase eachother around.

Problem solved

Roadcone 08-28-2014 08:48 AM

this was a suggestion as part of ODB3 years and years ago as well. everyone said hell no

n2oinferno 08-28-2014 08:59 AM

Granted I didn't read the article and am just going off of the headline but... Carry a modern smartphone? Already doing it.

Man if only your peeps would stop driving as slow as ass in Buffalo, left lane travelling at 55!

GotBRZ1691 08-28-2014 05:03 PM

The government would save more lives by making seniors over 65 re test for their license every X amount of years and that requires no changes to current cars or threatening peoples privacy

I will select the option in the computer so that the car can't speed. Then when I get in an accident where I couldn't speed to avoid the accident I will then sue the living shit out software company, computer company, car manufacturer, legal system.. you name it.

Then I will retire.

Thank you future technology! :D
