Trying the Toyota 86 on a skid pad at Yas Marina Circuit. The hands on demonstration was conducted in three stages. Stage 1 with all aids switched on, stage 2 with VSC (vehicle stability control) in sport mode and stage 3 with VSC switched off.

enjoy!

ESBjiujitsu 05-31-2012 08:13 AM

how awesome is that!!!! :D

MannyO 05-31-2012 11:31 AM

Moral of the video...Rain+VSC Off= Death.

Jokes aside, it was really interesting to see how each stage behaved. Thanks for the video Carbon!

ESBjiujitsu 05-31-2012 11:37 AM

and death apparently = fun because that looks like a blast! lol

Fenrir 05-31-2012 11:42 AM

Is it just me, or do those drivers seem terrible? :(

SPCorBUST 05-31-2012 11:44 AM

death in most occasions other than a controlled environment

Marloon 05-31-2012 11:46 AM

that looks like GREAT FUN! I wanna do that! :D

RaceR 05-31-2012 11:46 AM

Insane amounts of water on that skidpad!
Does not seem to represent wet road. It does seem to represent what easily happens if you are in some sort of huge puddle of water and tries to accelerate.
If it was not aquaplaning in some sort of way then the driver probably sucks..

Video confirms VSC works nice tough ! .. looked fun :)

AX_FRS 05-31-2012 11:47 AM

seemed terrible. barely attacked it with vsc on. i'm pretty sure the first one with vsc off was gassing it when he started to slide

They were probabaly driving badly on purpose to show how well the system works. I'm quite sure that even if that were ice, a good cautious driver could navigate that course with VSC/TCS off. But the point of the video was to show how well the systems work when the SHTF.

DubGUy 05-31-2012 12:13 PM

Awesome! Now I know I can go to the water park, turn VSC of and enjoy sliding around! I keed. Awesome video demonstration! Thanks! :happyanim:

I'm relabeling my VSC SPORT button the DRIFT SMART button. The TRAC OFF button will become the DRIFT DUMB button. :)

phattyduck 05-31-2012 12:42 PM

The grip on that skidpad looks similar to ice with some sand on it. Almost no acceleration when the wheels are spinning.

There is no reason to take the TCS off during normal driving, but this video is also no reason to freak out in the rain... only ice/snow. :burnrubber:

Cool video.

I think this shows the level of fun you can have with VSC Sport on while still having a level of safety, which is very important IMO to the potential 1st time RWD drivers who will be driving this car.

Even on public roads, probably better to keep VSC sport on just incase anything gets too crazy while driving spiritedly.

Awesome video... clearly the VSC works very well... this is my first rear-wheel drive car and my first car with VSC /TC... The Celica was a very different beast. It is going to be fun experimenting in a big parking lot when it rains.

Great vid! thanks...

You do realize that VSC will be braking and reducing engine power enough to look like that, even if he had the car floored.

That surface looked like it had as much grip as wet snow or ice.

ROJ 05-31-2012 02:03 PM

I drove the car there on that day in Yas,

We went flat-out into the wet course. Even with VSC & TC switched off the car can be navigated with ease in such terrible traction conditions. I just fell in love in how responsive the car is and how easy it is to adapt to its dynamics..

ZetaVI 05-31-2012 02:07 PM

good vid. informative as well.

Just like the select fire ARs that say "Alive" for safe, "Dead" for semi-auto and "Undead" for full-auto hahaha.

SioXie101 05-31-2012 03:17 PM

:respekt:the rain by not turning your VSC off!

86 waterpark/ slip and slide

Bristecom 05-31-2012 05:54 PM

It's funny because any time I drive a 2 wheel drive car in snow or slick conditions (the time you need SC/TC most), I always end up turning them off because it's harder to drive properly with them on. Although I'm glad this system has a sport mode which seems to be a good compromise. I'll probably hit the VSC sport button every time I get in the car and turn it completely off when I'm in a safer environment and want to play around.

carbonBLUE 05-31-2012 06:19 PM

I'm still curious how the snow mode behaves other than it starts the car in second gear

I was just thinking that looked like a giant automotive slip and slide!

I'd love to do that. Seems like a lot of fun! :burnrubber: But I'm glad to see with everything on the car runs through it almost perfectly.

Yep, Snow mode = Understeer mode if you ask me. My biggest fear in adverse conditions has always been understeer. Oversteer can almost always be controlled with your steering wheel and your right foot; the former is usually because you missed your braking zone. :D

For my old IS300, snow mode just meant retarded gas application and quicker upshifts (it was a slushbox). It didn't necessarily mean understeer, it just didn't tend to mass oversteer anywhere near as often. I drove that car for 3-4 years through a few messy winters and had my fair share of scares when trying to change lanes in a 5-6" snow day on the highway. Those ridges that build up between lanes can really mess you up regardless of how light you are on the throttle because you go from low-grip to no-grip and if you apply the same gas, you are going to lose it if you hit an uneven spot. Traction control for me was always on unless I wanted to do something stupid on purpose.

Trick is to understand what you are about to hit (which VSC can't do - it only reacts, cannot pre-empt... yet) and prep accordingly. Going to change lanes in my situation above? Ease up on gas before hitting the ridge.

Usually gas + overly high speeds is the enemy in low grip scenarios. It will only understeer if you were going too fast to begin with.

Back on topic: the VSC looks just right. Glad the programmers got the nanny trained just about right. As for the comments on "bad drivers", it looks like they were being told to never gas off during mid turn to purposely lose it to show off how it can save you. The guy is practically gassing through out most of the slalom even though if I were to lose control like that on a wet road, I'd be gassing off to regain grip.

Extremely cool.

Thanks for putting this together. It was extremely cool to watch.

86knecht 06-01-2012 05:16 PM

you control the car with your body not VSC

DrDuquette 06-02-2012 10:33 AM

The skid pad looks as slick as ice. It may look like they are not attacking it, but I'll bet they have the throttle mashed to the floor. Look how easy the tires spin. It's not that easy in the rain on pavement. That is ice/slow conditions.

PMok 06-02-2012 04:08 PM

what's the different grille on the main test car (you can see the 2nd car right behind it at the start doesn't have it)? GT86 specific accessory, or a preproduction part? Haven't seen that on the Scion FR-S photos.
