So what happens if you go past 4000 RPMs during break-in period?

I'm at around 1300 kms (800 miles) now, and I got spirited one night. So I decided to rev past 4000 RPMs consistently for 5 minutes or so.

I never reached 7400 RPM redline, but the most I got is probably close to just under 7000 RPMs...

So what happens now? :confused0068:

Nothing, you get a hug from the car-gods.

If you're going to sell it before warranty ends then you can have fun from the day one (I know I'm going to). ;)

jeffchap 08-23-2014 12:17 PM

Nothing. I hit the rev limiter on my test drive.

sousuke86 08-23-2014 01:23 PM

Engine explodes.

Jesse36m3 08-23-2014 01:30 PM

Man, you're done. You better sell it before the engine blows up.

Just kidding. It won't hurt it to go above 4000. In fact, there are some very good arguments floating around on the board regarding winding it out a few times during break-in.

The critical thing is that you don't break it in on the highway using cruise control. The rest is just extra precaution.

You wind up with a better performing engine with better ring seal :)

unsurety 08-23-2014 02:31 PM

If you do it in 3rd gear, you hit 88mph and go back 20 years in time

Yes, Dino-Riders is awesome. I watched that shit as a kid...almost as cool as Power Lords.

Pretty sure mine was hitting 8k RPMs on the dyno being tuned to 20+ psi before the "break-in period" was even up.

Obviously any car that is taken on a test drive gets revved to over 4K.

I believe it was a Road and Track article some years ago that said if you ignore the break in instructions and rev your engine like you stole it from day one it will develop worn rings and burn oil earlier in it's life.

But the tolerances to which engines are made now are SO much closer than in the 70's it is probably much less true.

Next time you go out to run to 7-11 for a Slurpee and hit the key:

....and now you know, the rest of the story...........

I'm pretty sure men come from Subaru and take the car back if you do this. Oh well, you could always try to hide it somewhere so they can't find it.

Nothing happens, your car will run and drive like anything else out there.
