"Is it fast?"
Anyone else tired of getting this question? Every person who comes up to me to talk to me about my car asks it...so tired of explaining..."no, it's not fast...it handles great though". Has happened at least 10 times in the last year and a half. Oh well I guess...just wondering if this happens to other people as much as it does to me? At least people are coming up and complimenting my car, I guess...that hasn't really happened before, and I've had plenty of cars...slow and fast.
|
I'm tired of people saying it's slow, to be honest. This is the fastest car I've ever driven, so to me it is fast. But since everyone is so negative about the power/speed of this car, I've become hesitant when answering that question. I've settled for, "It's quick, but everyone says it's slow."
|
"No, it's slow."
Don't be so strung up on what people think. |
True - it just gets old after a while, I guess. Like, I personally don't care that it's "slow". It's still faster than a couple of cars I've owned, and it's a lot slower than some others. It really doesn't matter to ME so much because I knew what I was getting, but it's like the people that come up and talk to me are almost disappointed for me when I tell them it's slow LOL
|
This car is not slow.. is it a 13 second car out of the box? No, but its not slow.
Problem is, it looks much faster than it is. |

Now if someone approaches me and asks, "How's it handle on the curves," that's a different story. But more often than not I get the "so do you drift it," and I show them the curb rash under the front bumper from when I tried :bellyroll: |
It's not slow.
Until 8 months ago my next fastest cars were 2005 Acura TSX M6 and 2008 Honda Accord V6. Last winter I bought a 2011 WRX and Cobb flash tuned it. That was the first car I ever owned that I'd call fast. Still, 6.2s 0-60 is not slow. Actually, I am doubtful I could launch my car that fast. I guess the best reply would be, "It's not bad, but it's not a muscle car either". |
I was listening in on a random conversation at Jimmy John's. The guy making sandwiches drove a twin as well and was talking to a customer about his car. He kept comparing it to his 300C and how much faster of a car it was stating "Yea the car looks great but it's powered by a lawn mower engine. Looks fast but is really slow." The sandwich guy simply responded by saying "Yea it's definitely slow if all you know how to do is step on the gas pedal. If you actually know how to drive though it will run circles around many cars." Obviously the guy took offense, but all I could do was smile and chuckle when it was my turn to place my order.
The true question is: how can the Jimmy John's guy afford a twin? |
Never argue with a Jimmy Johns employee about fast!
|
I'm not through my break in period yet, so not sure how fast it will feel above 4 grand. But coming from a somewhat neck snapping audi boosting well over 20psi, I'd call my new 86 "peppy". Luckily i sold my A4 and drove a civic for 6 months to save up for this new ride, so compared to that POS, the FRS has plenty of juice.
When people ask, I tell them it's fast on a track, not in a straight line. |
The problem is, most people conflate "fast" with low/midrange torque. In other words, "Is the car fast when I push the gas pedal without downshifting?" For which the answer is no.
The question they really should be asking is, "Is the car fast when I push the gas pedal after downshifting to the lowest possible gear?" For which the answer is, the Twins are about as fast as a MK6 GTI, Mini Cooper S, Civic SI, etc. ... which is to say, still pretty darn slow, but about what'd you'd expect for the price. |
The best answer to the question is "I don't care." 0 to 60 is for losers stuck in a time warp. This car dominates in the areas that matter in the real world. Handles like a dream. Stops on a dime. These two features are much more applicable to legal street performance than sheer acceleration. And, are the only performance characteristics that matter when it comes to down to safety where applicable to accident avoidance.
|
Yup I get that. They always have this look of horror on their faces when I tell them its not fast. Next time I'm gonna say it runs a 13.5 and then they'll say "is that good?"
|
"not fast…quick and fun…like a gokart"
|
After a vortech supercharger, the car isn't slow anymore :)
|
It's a very typical and irrelevant question from an average Joe.
|
i just answer, it depend on the pressure you put on the gaz pedal.

This car is slower than a new Camry. It's slow. There is nothing impressive about having a fast stock car, I'd rather be a fast driver. |
Fast enough to kill yourself

The v6 camry is a fast sedan..... Why do people insist on not giving credit where credit is due? |

A high 14 second quarter mile time is not fast, period. Hell, my stock 2005 Srt-4 could run 13s and it was 20k brand new. |

You forgot to add the aston martin rapide, porche panamera, mercedes CL45 amg, Cadillac CTS, CTS-V list goes on and on and on. Low 14 seconds for an affordable naturally aspirated Sedan is impressive...... Why is it so hard for people to say a Camry is fast? LOL |

Have you ever been in a fast car? |
The car is bog slow. But most affordable handling cars are. How slow? The 6.3 to 60 time is misleading. The "street start" of 8 seconds is .8 slower than an RX-8. And a whopping 1.3 slower than a '92 Corrado. The twins have to have the slowest feeling 95 in the quarter ever.

"Fast" can be subjective. Just tell them the GT86/FRS/BRZ, with a simple upgrade of brakes and tires, did this at the Nurburgring Nordschleife:
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXuGhEE8t1U"]RSR RAW: Toyota GT86 - Nurburgring Nordschleife - YouTube[/ame] GT86 clocks an impressive time of 8min 27sec placing it above many more pricey/powerful cars: http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife.html It beat: BMW M5 8:28.00 Porsche 911 Carrera 8:28.00 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabrio 8:28.00 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 8:28.00 Porsche 911 Carrera 8:28.00 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 8:28.10 Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 V-Spec II 8:28.10 Mercedes CLK 55 AMG 8:29.00 Audi S4 Avant 8:29.00 Audi TT-S Coupe 8:29.00 |

v6 mustang 13.9 @ 100.1 v6 Camry 14.3 @ 101 v6 camry traps higher than the mustang...... Just admit that the camry is a fast sedan. LOL its not hard. |

It seems like this is coming down to whether or not it is fast in a straight line or in a track layout...

I bought this car because I can drive it fast, not so I could bet my pinkslip every Saturday night. |
Eh. not worth the time to type anymore. lol

I thought this was a thread revival. Turns out it's not! But I remember seeing a thread with the same title.

I was tired of this question 2 years ago. I just say NO!

My reply to this question is "It's entertaining."
|
I preemptively tell them "It's slow but handles great" before they even get a chance to ask. I've had much faster cars before the 86 and find it more enjoyable to drive a slow car fast.
Besides, I got the need for speed out of my system last year. ;) |

i loved my celica actually and i had one of the fastest NA 2zz-ge ever built :) at 2500lbs with around 220whp to the ground before corn juice a lot of sub $40k cars had a hard time keeping up with me in a straight line. so sitting at around 290 crank hp i was at about 8.6 lbs/hp. adding power to light cars goes quite a long way. |
I just give a knowing smile and say "wadda you think?"
They can come to their own conclusions. The muscle car guys think no and the minivan crew think yes and I don't correct either group. |
The frs is slow on straight line but when the road start to curve thats when the Nos kick in.
