San Jose cop situation help

Sup yall im from San Diego and will be moving to San Jose next week. (SJSU)

My dad wont let me get another exhaust part until i can confirm that the cops are not strict as fuck about loud exhausts.

In socal, you wont be pulled over for a loud exhaust unless youre insane loud.(straight pipe loud..).

Can anyone confirm that louder than stock exhausts are ok?

Kamakanani0 08-12-2014 09:36 PM

Should be I have a muffler delete and it's louder than stock [ame]http://youtu.be/E9Y2D-6QJbE[/ame]

finch1750 08-12-2014 09:41 PM

Just stay out of Fremont and dont drive like a ****. Cops will use it as a reason to pull you over only if you give are asking for it.

There's another option that you probably have not considered.......

I know its a left-field crackheaded idea but, how about......Listen to your Dad.:iono:

B2FiNiTY 08-12-2014 09:49 PM

I'm with stuguy. Until you can fully support yourself and do whatever you want, listen to your dad.

I seriously never thought I would ever give that kind of advice to someone as I was always the kid that never listened to his/her parents but in the end, they do know better most of the time. Experience > all

clayrush 08-13-2014 12:42 AM

He is listening to his dad.

He is trying to find out how much cops care about a loud exaust systems before his dad let's him do more to his exhaust.

Instead of giving him a hard time. You should be happy that his dad is hooking him up with car stuff.

Anyway. ... I don't live in the area, but I do go through a bit. I would say it depends on the individual cop. Or if you are ripping on it.

My celica and my girlfriends frs have very loud castles systems and never get hassled about it.
I would generally says that cops up here are lest strict than LA.
Cops. But I am not sure compared to SD cops.

akahenry 08-13-2014 12:44 AM

I can safely say that in the East Bay (mainly Oakland, Hayward, and San Leandro), cops don't really give a fuck about loud cars, as long they're not sounding like Harleys. I drive next to, behind, and in front of cops all the time and haven't been pulled over for the 9 months of ownership. Mind you, my car is pretty loud too. Just don't drive like an asshole and keep it civilized.

taylorsankey 08-13-2014 01:13 AM

thanks guys

brz408 08-13-2014 02:01 AM

Welcome to the hood! You'll be okay in SJ. It's a big city, too much other crime going on that diverts the attention.

Raven240 08-13-2014 02:08 AM

Cops don't care in San Jose because of crime. #Spartangraduate

sweetfrs 08-13-2014 02:32 AM

lucky lol i can't wait to move back home! lol but anyways don't drive like a dumba** and you should be fine, and don't speed on the highways !

acx23 08-13-2014 09:52 AM

It's not as bad as before (like 5+ years ago) but that doesn't mean running 4" tip with straight pipe is tolerable. It really depends on where you are, some cities and areas are stricter than others. Good rule of thumb - lift and neutral cruise whenever you see cops around... and praying.

A fellow Spartan! Welcome. San Jose cops generally will not care if you have a loud exhaust as long as you don't floor it or drive recklessly. Take it easy on the throttle :)

This half true. I live in Fremont. Had no problems.

Don't drive like a douche bag ever regardless of where you are.

G_Ride 08-13-2014 01:11 PM

@taylorsankey, there are asshole cops all over the bay area, but there are also a fair share of cool ones too. You should probably be okay as long as you drive sensibly.

BRZChix 08-13-2014 01:15 PM

You might want to watch out for noise complaints from the neighbors (depending on where you live)... don't blow through quiet residential neighbors with your loud exhaust early morning or late at night.

It's all about common sense and consideration.

stugray 08-13-2014 02:12 PM

Please excuse my ignorance but, arent any after market exhaust mods illegal in CA?

Unless you have one with a CARB sticker on it.

Catbacks are not regulated by CARB. The only restriction is noise, and that's 95db (measured how? :iono: ). Everything before the cat must be CARB certified though.

It's illegal to modify anything that can affect emissions (any modification between the MAF sensor and the last cat) unless it is CARB exempt. Catbacks aren't inherently illegal since they do not affect emissions. However, they are not supposed to be louder than 95dB. In reality, people still modify their cars. It's up to the cop to decide if he wants to pull your over. In most cases, the cop has better things to do, as long as you don't give him a reason to pull you over.

darkonion 08-13-2014 02:27 PM

"CA. V.C. 27151 No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5(commencing with Section 27200) of this chapter. No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified."

Most people interpret the laws as "all modified exhausts are illegal" but forget to read the part in red, which actually completely changes the interpretation.

I believe that 27150 states the excessive or unusual noise (whistle-tips!) laws.

I wish I had rich enough parents to have a FR-S back when my parents cared about shit like this. lol

VroomVroom86 08-13-2014 02:46 PM

Nice! I go to SJSU as well; I've never been in trouble with cops for my loud exhaust. I have a tomei 80, and that's one of the loudest exhausts out right now.

titleistforged 08-13-2014 02:58 PM

I have the Top Speed axleback, and while I don't live in San Jose, I drive in and out of the area quite often and have cops drive behind me and etc. Never any issues. I got pulled over in Burlingame (not SJ, I know), but cop said nothing about my exhaust. As long you're obeying the law and your exhaust doesn't sound like a freight train, you should generally be just fine. My 2 cents :)

Frishkorn 08-13-2014 03:08 PM

I don't know how you California kids put up with the governmental BS. Bad enough you can't buy the recommended fuel for your twins. But now you have to worry about if it's "too loud". I wonder what other sort of oppressive restrictions you guys and gals deal with on a regular basis.

And here I am bitching about not being able to tint my side windows anything darker then 70% (factory).

I blame it on SoCal. Ever been to Los Angeles? When you are able to see what you are breathing... that's usually not a good thing.

No, I've been on a boycott of California for some time now. Only place I've ever been is Edwards AFB and I had no choice, (former USAF avionics guy) but I stayed on the base. As a lover of firearms and cars, the whole emissions testing and weapons restrictions that started there, have made me not really want to spend my money there. I won't even shop online if I know it's being shipped or sold from CA.

I love and hate living here. Our legislators have their heads farther up their asses than the average.

We put up with it for the vast things CA offers. Moderate weather year-round, gorgeous outdoors, twisty canyon roads, and the broad spectrum of culture, which is huge to me because I LOVE food of all types... I can go on and on.

I run E85 which burns cleaner anyway, even without cats. It's a risk I'm willing to take. You can still own firearms, just can't customize popular rifles without it being a PITA. They've even relaxed concealed carry. I'm all for the 2nd amendment, but I don't care to carry a gun on me all the time.

clayrush 08-13-2014 07:29 PM

I very much have a love hate relationship with this state. I am just happy cars that are 2000 and newer are not required to do a sniffer rolling dyno emissions test any more.

I used to live in San Jose, never had an issue with my greddy evo3 (silencers removed too).

Jesse1292 08-15-2014 08:50 PM

youll be fine my dude, i drive around downtown all the time and id say my exhaust is pretty loud. invidia n1 catback and catless front pipe. SJSU is great by the way youll love it! i sure did.

BlaineWasHere 08-17-2014 01:45 PM

It's more about how you drive than how loud your exhaust is.
