Got my new FR-S today.

Picked up my new 6 speed manual white FR-S today! I absolutely love it. I've had a chance to drive a couple autos and one other manual, so it wasn't a question of if I wanted it, it was a matter of trying to find one that was unsold. I called every dealer I could find that got a manual, and as luck would have it I found one that had a deal fall through.

17 miles on the odometer when I got it, over 100 now, and a little rubber in teh wheel wells.

I'm VERY impressed by how easy it is to slide the thing around with the nannies turned off, but at the same time how much grip it has when you are just driving hard through a corner. I currently own a 200 spyder and a 2000 Celica GTS, and have had a very nice 90 alltrac, 89 MR2, etc. and what I don't own I have driven a bunch of. (except the 2000GT and 800 Sport). I own a performance shop, so that is not just whistling dixie either.

This is by far the best handling Toyota I have driven. In terms of absolute lateral Gs the MRS can probably give it a run for its money, but they are WAY less predictable at the limits.

Love the car - can't wait to dyno it tomorrow and get some pictures posted. (I had intended to get some taken today, but wound up having too much fun driving instead).

Oh - and a huge Kudos to the guys at Ft. Bend Toyota for a fantastic and painless buying experience. Bibin Thomas was super easy to work with and did a great job making everything roll along smoothly.

Turns out my friend & co-worker Jason managed to snag a couple pictures:

Nice, congrats man! I just picked mine up tonight. Did a really small run through the passes here. I have to agree, the handling in it is just so fun.

Chupacabra 05-30-2012 02:30 AM

So do you work at Hennessey in Sealy?

I only ask because I grew up in Rosenberg and had a chance to see their shop last summer.

The car looks fantastic btw.

LUCKY!!! I lived in LA for 5 years and we spent a lot of time on Angeles Crest, Angeles Forest, Turbull Canyon, etc. Boy do I miss those roads!

Nope - I have my own place - DD Performance Research. Not many people know about us unless they race a 2ZZ, 1ZZ or 3S-GTE powered car.

My dyno is way nicer than Hennesy's though. I have the brand new Dynojet 424xLC2 with the linx system. In ground 4WD dyno with additional 2000 ft lb eddy brakes on both rollers for load testing, and also the new linx system to keep the wheelspeed equalized on cars with viscous center couplings or invasive traction control that can't be turned off.

konichiwaa-B 05-30-2012 04:01 AM

Congrats! I just picked mine up the other day. I wonder if the break in period of keeping it under 4k RPM for the first 1000 miles should be strictly adhered to. That's difficult to do with this car considering where red-line is.

Grateful Dave 05-30-2012 04:27 AM

Congrats:clap:
It's great to hear another new owner of a FRS satisfied.:w00t:

Not that hard - you can just set the shift light to 4K and turn the beep on so it nags you if you go over.

And of course I am going to stick to the manufacturer's reccomended break in.... As per manual I will only exceed 4K if its an emergency. Like an emergency burnout, an emergency drift, I need to pass someone, Its Very very Wednesday.... Things like that ;)

Slartibartfast 05-30-2012 11:22 AM

Congrats!

Love the white, but I'm getting black. Yin and yang. Lol

I'm jealous, mine is still at sea.

Congrats bro! Can't wait till you dyno this baby!

Black was my first choice, white was second. White was availabel and I'm not a patient man :D

White is a better (more practical) choice here anyway. We have long hot summers and that Scroll type AC compressor doesn't look very large.... ;)

Congrats, I'm in the same boat. I have been looking for a Hot Lava / Manual and can't find one anywhere in FL. My local dealership wanted to sell me their Hot Lava Auto but like I told the sales guy. I have waited for this car to come out for 3 years now, I refuse to settle. I'll just wait till I can get what I want.

Good for you. The car looks great in Hot Lava. I haven't always been a fan of the color, but the FR-S wears it extremely well.

I can't have a Hot Lava, Red, or blue car though. Waaaay too attention getting - I got enough tickets in my younger days - I try to stay under the radar now (Pun intended) :D

So hows the backseat legroom compare to the Celi? That's all I've got to base it off of in my head!

To be able to fit in the car, the driver's seat is literally pressed against the rear seats.

For me, at least... but I'm 6'7".

I have 2 kids. One is 10 and the other is 7. We were able to put all 4 of us in the car but there is VERY little room between the back of the driver's seat and the back seat and I am 5'10". With my wife in the passanger seat there was more than enough room in the seat behind her. The good thing is that we very rarely all ride in my car. We have a Ford Explorer as our "Family" vehicle so it's usually just me in my car.

This is on the money. My 7 year old fit fine last night behind the passenger seat, but she had folded her legs on the seat.

I have ridden in the back seat just to try it, but my head hits the rear glass and the pass seat had to be pretty far forward.

IMO the rear seat is definitely kids, pets & gear only.

The Celica had more rear seat leg room, but then again it was a longer car with a shorter engine bay.

MarkRacerX 05-30-2012 02:55 PM

Congrats !!!

I love Whiteout :)

konichiwaa-B 05-30-2012 09:38 PM

I have a 5 year old and a 7 year old and they both fit in the back just fine. The rear passenger just needs to turn their feet out a little. I love this car! I am just looking for an excuse to go drive it. I was just in Home Depot and a couple of high school kids walked by and said sweet ride! This thing looks like a mini maserati. And it's so low to the ground. When I pull in the garage I feel like I'm sitting on the floor. I can say compared to a 1990 240sx, this has slightly more room in the back.

i miss my celica too! love your long intake headers! they were gnarly sounding when i had them on :D!

i think it was the engine bay being much smaller that helped with leg room in the celi, ill miss the space of the hatch for sure!

how soon can we expect an intake manifold and ported stock headers from you :D?

Jordo! 05-31-2012 01:03 AM

Congrats, comrade! :D

Start building stuff for it!

jcX4ever 05-31-2012 02:54 AM

Nice to hear you got one.

I am looking at this FR-S or maybe a MR-S (spyder) with 2zz as a fun car.

I would like to hear a very detailed thought from you about FR-S vs MR-S with 2zz. Also your thoughts about 2ZZ-GE vs 4U-GSE.

Enjoy your new ride!

We strapped the new FR-S down on the dyno today with less than 150 miles on the ODO.
Run 004 was in 3rd run 007 and 008 were in 4th:
http://www.ddperformanceresearch.com...20dyno%201.jpg
Run 010 was in 5th, and we saw a huge jump in mid-range torque, despite a richer afr.
http://www.ddperformanceresearch.com...20dyno%202.jpg

To address JCX4Ever's question - this is a comparison between a stock Elise 2zz-ge (over 20K so fully broken in) and the new stock FR-S (not broken in):
http://www.ddperformanceresearch.com...vs%20Elise.jpg

Both runs are STD correction on my dyno so I think the torque curve says everything that needs to be said on the matter.

I have built a bunch of 2ZZ Spyders and turbo spyders. I love them, they are awesome cars. AT this time with the lack of an ECU tuning solution for the FR-S the spyder has way more power production potential when modified.

That being said, If I had to choose one or the other, I would take the FR-S. As an overall package I think it is slightly superior to the Spyder. You get 100x more storage, the theoretical ability to transport more than 2 living beings, and the handling is comparable in terms of capability, but way more controlled and predictable in the FR-S.

Thankfully I don't have to choose between them - spyders are cheap enough these days there is no reason not to keep both!

Can't wait to see what you can do with this thing Dave. I can feel the money leaking from my wallet right now... Yay!!!

Jumping in to say I just drove mine off the lot, manual in whiteout like yours. Couldn't be more excited!

is 165hp to the wheels standard for a car rated as 200hp?? seems like a big drop

The 200HP rating is for engine horsepower. There is always drivetrain lose. The reason for only 165 of the 200 getting to the wheels.

Btw isnt this cars 5th a 1.0 gear ratio?

Nah - thats about right for a RWD with only a couple hundred miles. This is WHP. Factory ratings are always in BHP - which is brake Horsepower at the flywheel - it doesn't account fro drivetrain losses.

Yep - manual is 1:1 in fifth - auto is 1:1 in 4th. I has assumed 4th would be 1:1 but I looked it up this morning after those results.

Manual goes:

1 - 3.626:1
2 - 2.188:1
3 - 1.541:1
4 - 1.213:1
5 - 1:1
6 - 0.767:1

4.1:1 Final drive

Auto is:
1 - 5.538:1
2 - 2.060:1
3 - 1.404:1
4 - 1:1
5 - 0.713:1
6 - 0.582:1 <--- hence the better fuel economy rating

4.1:1 final drive

pr086 05-31-2012 03:23 PM

i know you should expect a loss, but that seems like a big gap. i guess im used to fwd cars where the loss is generally less

Correct - transaxles don't have to turn the direction of rotation to get power to the wheels, nor do they have to spin the extra weight of the driveshaft. As a result they are inherently more efficient.

Remember this is also a BRAND NEW car. At 10,000 miles it would not surprise me to see anywhere from 170 - 175 to the tire once everythign is thoroughly broken in.

Gotcha, MR-S & FR-S is a must have ..

Thanks!

I know Boosted2.0 from newcelica.org and I'm certain he'll be doing some awesome R&D for the FRS in the future! His contribution to the celica community has been nothing short of amazing and I am extremely eager to see what D&D comes out with for the FRS!

The car looks great Boosted! I'm glad to have been able to score one for myself! Looking forward to get the chance to drift it around a parking lot or two! Any early R&D ideas for the FRS? Can I get on the Boosted2.0 intake manifold yet? lol

Expect great stuff from DD Performance.

Psst.... first goal is dial out god awful 25 wtq dip. I know Cobb will offer an option, what else is on the horizon for tuning options?
