Can't Get Over 3000 RPM
 

Hey everybody,

So I drive an automatic FR-S and it's been doing fine up until 2 days ago. Now no matter how hard I push the car, it'll always shift at exactly 3000 RPM. I can't get over 3000 unless I use the paddles. Also when it does shift, it is the hardest, neck-breaking, shift ever. Definitely wasn't as smooth as before. I have about 3500 miles on the car as of now

I should also note that the car is noticeably slower and makes a chugging noise

Yeah, that mofo needs to go to the dealer. Sounds like a serious tranny issue.

warranty claim! it is a 2013 and you only have 3500 miles? mine is 2015 and i already have 1000 miles. are you the original owner or is it salvage title?

Why you would come to a forum with a problem this serious before going to the dealer first is beyond me. It's clearly operating far out of what anyone would consider normal.

Well, he may have posted just to get some input before going to the dealeR.

Sometimes other forum members point out that they had a similar issue and the OP can go to the dealer better prepared.

Dealers can be assholes sometimes so getting input of the forum and going in feeling informed is a lot better.

Maybe you accidentally put 87 octane instead of 91 or 93?

I always get paranoid of this so I triple check to make sure I got 91

Funny thing, when I was driving up and down some steep hills today, the problem didn't seem as dramatic

It wouldn't cause an issue like this.

This only happened to me once when my CEL was on..

When I had my first BRZ, it was an auto and I had something similar happen, but almost immediately after acting like that it grenaded the transmission so I am not sure if you are having a problem anywhere related to mine. Bottom line though, go to the dealer because that is not normal.

The shifting at 3K could be a tranny electronic control issue, but the neck-jerking shift sounds like a mechanical issue with the tranny to me.


And the chugging is coming from the engine?


Call the dealer and see if they want you drive it to them or if they want to send a flatbed to transport it back to them to prevent possible further damage to whatever components have the problems.

Maybe the cricket is stuck in the throttle body? Oh wait...

Take it to the dealer. See if you can get it figured out there.

Many electronics were replaced. Dealer says it runs fine now, waiting for a new transmission just in case the current one is messed up

Crazy, I expected it to just be someone disconnected the MAF while the car was on or something..

The moral of the story is f%$k the dealer, we‘ll fix your car for you.

Hmmmm... smells like the old tried-and-tried-again shotgun method. Sorry to hear that. Fingers crossed for ya.

Update: so I've clocked on a little over 300 miles on the new tranny. Does anyone notice that when shifting under 4K, the car takes about a second to "think" before it shifts? At 4K and above it'll shift quickly like normal without hesitation. I don't remember if my old transmission did that before it crapped out

My friend has the same problem but he replaced the seals instead of electrical parts. hope these helps.
