Evolution of 86 build.
Took delivery of a silver 86 HI spec Dec 2013.
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pslbmtkvzq.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psuyfitjak.jpg Stock standard bar TRD body kit ..... but will evolve ..... last modified cars when Kadett Superboss ruled |
First up was to improve the breathing ....
This is the standard setup on the 86. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psu9jxmtay.png ATS supplied a cold air K&N induction kit. 50 minutes with my 19 year old mechanic assistant .... http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pszah06kik.jpg Follow easy to use instructions and basic hand tools are all that is needed. |
By July 2014 .... added a Caska head unit and an active sub and small amplifier ....
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psmuqzsqte.jpg Spent a few days at Tommy Jnr with TNT exhaust fitted .... http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psl7temcbx.jpg |
Today paid RGM for the Supercharger ..... 2 weeks to wait for new kits to arrive ..... watch this space.
Ordered EBC yellow front brake pads from Formula Friction and should land in next week. Rims off to be black powder coated. Retaining original rims to keep unsprung mass as light as possible. 15mm spacers flying in from Super GT in UK ...should arrive by Friday. Will post more as things develop. |
Welcome. Car looks nice. Keep us updated on the supercharger
|
Finally a SA Build thread! Nice! Can you post a video of the exhaust sound?
And provide the details of the exhaust? :w00t: |
Looks good! Did the induction make any noticeable difference?

On lower revs, no difference between a stock and hi flow air filter. As revs go past 4500rpm, breathing gets more restrictive on standard setup. Gains only above 4500rpm to 7400 rpm redline and at best ... 5kW on this K&N intake. That is well within variables on a standard vehicle so no, you will not feel it. Is it worth the 9K it costs ..... would say no. A K&N replacement filter would be more bang for buck but forget about massive increases. 2-3 kW is realistic above 4500rpm. BTW, this K&N kit will be taken off for the supercharger. So watch the for sale section in the near future. It's a good and well designed piece of kit and will come with all boxes and instructions as well. On exhaust. ECU goes crazy if cats are removed. TNT did the rear box with twin pipes for me and fitted a hi-flow cat. Will get wheels back this Thu so will get xhaust note video then. It does make the revving a little more responsive above 5000rpm and there is a little more below that ..... But again well within normal variables so no, would not say much gain from xhaust except a more pronounced xhaust note. Cost at TNT in Germiston was 2.5k. |
Welcome
Did you remove the cats from the headers as well? |
cool. thanks for the info

I am trying to research all exhaust options in SA at the moment, so I make the right choice. This is what I know so far thats available(Reasonable in SA): 1) BRZ exhaust - R5,500 (Approx R6,500 Fitted) (Bolt on Catback) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=63713&page=2 2) Powerflow exhaust - R2,500 Fitted (Custom) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ight=powerflow 3) Remus exhaust - approx R12,000 fitted (Bolt on Catback) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=23727&page=3 4) RGM exhaust - R7,000 fitted (With header decatted)(Custom) (Youtube search: "RGM 86") 5) TNT exhaust - R2,500 fitted (Custom) http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25797 The TNT exhaust was considered on this Forum, but no one ever gave feedback or a video of the exhaust. Please Sir...Post a video...you will make possible dreams come true. Alternatively, will you be attending any TTCC events? Thanks |
Plan is to attend TTCC event in near future although more likely my 19 year old will take the car.
Will get sound track uploaded when video is taken. Should be in next few days. On TNT ...... whole different kettle of fish. TNT is in Germiston and walking into a factory setup, there are more customs and high end racers, including V8 Modifieds and track cars than you can imagine. TNT is not a mass production facility. They develop highly specialized exhaust systems on a custom basis. Prices are reasonable but the craftsmanship is beyond anything else you will find in SA and I include RGM xhausts. But you have to know what you want when you call TNT. Staff is used to dealing with very technical and informed racing drivers so yes, daunting at first and you will likely walk away feeling let down. That is normal ....they don't do mod's on cars, they don't do ECU flashing .... they build the best exhaust systems in SA by far. Give them a call .... TNT 011 822 1772 |
Just got car back ....little late for photo's but lets try ...... rims now satin black. Cost was R 2200 at Supaquick in Ruimsig (Neil 011 958 2112).
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pss9wdfutj.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps390mdyyg.jpg TNT called. Spacers are stuck in customs. SARS Customs system crashed. Will only be cleared next week. |
It cost R2200 to spray the rims????
Mine cost me about R130 (one can of plastidip) |
lol Im gonna do mine full black just now as well.

Yes, it's permanent and no mods to rim. Just cleaned and painted. The tail pipe dia is 100mm for each one. Measured at long last :D |
Still working towards the RGM SC that starts on Monday ..... 11 Aug 2014.
Few things had to be done ..... replaced brake fluid with Ferodo Ultra racing fluid (Boiling point 330C). You need about 750ml. Sourced at ATS for R 200 per 500ml. Fitted EBC yellow pads in front and have bedded them in. Bites like crazy when warmed up and on par with std shoes when cold. No squelling so far. Today my son dissapeared with the 86 and I got a call 3 hours later to come and pay. Autoquip fitted Eibach springs for R 4200 including fitting and wheel alignment. Sherman at Autoquip Fourways (011 467 7963) was very helpful. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pswuonhkpf.jpg You can see the yellow on the front pads and the wheels are filling the bodywork out nicely. Spacers arrived sans bloody nuts ...being shipped from UK. http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psv0nxl8xc.jpg |
wow looks hot.. thanks for that.. I am sold on the eibach springs now!
|
Very nice! But get it painted correctly please.

You won't be disappointed. Take it all, but take it easy. You'll find that you'll need to exercise restraint especially on wet roads which are great fun, but it becomes so easy to make a very big mistake... :confused0068: See - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=178 |
Fish Eagle, did you change the bulbs on the clocks? I see yours is all red.

If I may ask what made you choose RGM? |
Quote:
I have been using RGM for over 12 years. He supercharged one of my LR's and they did many chipping and mods on various of my vehicles. I have always been super impressed with their OCD attention to detail. I have honestly never had a single bad things to say about RGM ..... superb service. All my mods have been reliable and very well put together and explanations were clear and concise. I did consider the Sprintex SC but that is due to the configuration ....not that Vortech is poor quality. After thinking a little, I decided RGM is my first choice. Power without reliability is a pain in the @ss. I am not saying that any other installers don't match or may even exceed what RGM delivers. After 12 years I trust RGM and that deserves my loyalty. Short answer .. I have 100% trust in any work RGM does. They are that good. Steve and Rob are both honest and approachable without a single arrogant streak in them. |
So progress ..started on xhaust ....

Removing K&N cold air intake
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pswywa9bml.jpg Open wide ...Vortech arriving .... http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pswhxdopt9.jpg and making space for the intercooler http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pslbsj61ub.jpg (Images are the property of RGM) |

I could not agree with you more. I opted to go the Sprintex route for simplicity, however in the long run I have had nothing but problems with this kit, including the frustration of lack of back up support due to an inexperienced supplier. Good luck with your project I'm sure you will enjoy |
Awesome... :party0030:
Congrats! Please continue updating the progress... Going RGM is the best and most reliable SC option for this car - proven over and over again by many happy customers... |
Intercooler is in .....
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps80kyvqjq.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psdhtpvth9.jpg Now the Vortech is being fitted ... http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psfeaihllw.jpg Neat and tidy .... http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...pscbkzj4zv.jpg http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...psiputaass.jpg (Images are the property of Rob Green) Big thank you to Dave at RGM for supplying images for updates. |
Spacers cleared customs and were delivered at long last. Only going for a 15mm so will fit once 86 is back from RGM :D
|
Looks like it will be done by tomorrow! Guys working fast!
It looks great! |
@African, what conversion number is your car...?
Last I heard, RGM was nearing the 30th conversion mark... :respekt: |
