Cautionary tale (not my car) boost can be a huge PITA too, its not all red roses.....

Let this be a fair warning to all people out there new to the boost game. When Shit wants to go wrong, it will go wrong and it will bite you in the ass hard....

I don't know if the owner is here. From the hashtags and comments, it seems this is a BRZ with custom pitons and rods. Apparently it got rod knock 4 days after install.

This is the car getting Dynoed after build (there's video on the link):

The owner is in the Tampa 86 group and I think soflo group too.

Plenty of built engines don't last nearly as long as you would think, that's why it's best to get a built block from a reputable shop.

Floggin Tires 07-20-2014 12:42 PM

Hey Sportsguy,
We're really more interested in your car.
Give Updates.

Your new sig looks pro.

xjohnx 07-20-2014 12:42 PM

looks like tr3performance (aka fa20club) did the work.

who knew?

Calum 07-20-2014 12:43 PM

Considering the engine builder, I doubt anyone is surprised except the owner of the car.

Haha my car is good... I should put a disclaimer in the title so people don't think its my car.

s2d4 07-20-2014 12:46 PM

Which turbo kit?
Who did the install?
Who did the engine build?
Who did the tune?

MAN! How many cars is FA20club going to destroy?

Well, for now let's not assume anything. The only thing we know is he replied to the knock video saying TR3 installed it, but don't know anything else...

Being fair we don't know anything at all about how/when/where/why it happened.

The point of my post is that shit can still go wrong.

he also said it blew due to a "bad installation"

Certainly working hard on that record! :mad0260:

The Racers Line 07-20-2014 01:19 PM

@Sportsguy83 speaks the truth. We try to lay it all out for customers. Building a motors is a very detailed process, and things can definitely go wrong. Aftermarket anything is a very hard/expensive game to play.

Reaper 07-20-2014 01:26 PM

only Subaru builds these boxers right honestly. fullblown, map, etc etc are all pretty damn good and have worked extremely hard to learn the magic of properly assembling a boxer engine. If I needed a short block assembled it would not be by a shop new to boxer engines. Just read frs300's thread about headstuds being hand tight by the same shop.

Model Citizen 07-20-2014 01:48 PM

Im mostly amazed tr3 actually finished a car.

It's certainly not rocket science either. Subaru has no shortage if internal issues as well with their products. Skill, attention to details, the correct tools, and the ability to follow process is the key. Even the best of engine builders have things go wrong. There are a lot of variables in this game. I am by no means defending the company that did the work because we all know the back stories but as mentioned we also do not know any of the details.

Lonewolf 07-20-2014 03:05 PM

People need to post to that page and let all those folks know about toni and FA20 club's exploits...he's killing FA20's left and right!

Reaper 07-20-2014 04:08 PM

his crank case vent line isn't attached to anything.

woode 07-20-2014 05:00 PM

I can't even really feel bad for these fools going to TR3/Toni/FA20Club anymore.. I know I have personally been banned/kicked out of a few Facebook groups for trying to warn people about going to them, lol. Honestly, I am surprised nobody has gone and burnt down the shop.

sw20kosh 07-20-2014 08:53 PM

I learned my lesson a long time ago. I went to a small shady shop because they were offering unbeatable prices on a building my motor and stroking it even. Took them 1 year to finish the motor and when they delivered my vehicle to the dyno shop where my tuner and I were waiting to strap it to the dyno and tune the new motor... they start it up and instantly we hear massive rod knock and it is spewing out smoke.

6 months down the road they finish rebuilding it and it at least ran. It had all sorts of issues and smoked a bit. Issues were getting worse the more I drove it... Ended up just selling the car as is.

Unfortunately there are quite a few people who aren't on the forums and it really does suck that some people don't do the research before jumping the gun on a shop. Still feel sorry for those who attend there not knowing there history. Those who know and still go... that's a different story

FirestormFRS 07-20-2014 10:36 PM

Disclaimer: I am not defending the shop.

There are more than a few built engines, built buy others that have spun bearings.

the bearing oil feeds, and rods I think are the most concerning parts on this car when it goes under some heavy PSIa on an otherwise stock motor.

ringlands, head gaskets...I have heard of rather fragile hypereutetic pistons, and bad bearing oiling. I'm not sure if that's a boxer motor weak point, as I haven't researched much into the bearings of porsche motors. Even so, the crankcase oiling was much better in EJ motors than it is with this one.

Dipstik-sportech 07-20-2014 11:22 PM

Should be posting those pics on their Facebook page and on Instagram and tag them.
