Sell my BRZ for Tesla Roadster 2.x?

I'm considering selling my BRZ and getting a Tesla Roadster 2.0 or 2.5, which means 2010 or newer. I'd sell my car for more than an unmodified car but it will be super tough as people like to mod their cars themselves, even if it means paying labor to do so. Thought is still up in the air at this point. Since I have about $18k in parts into my car, maybe my selling price would be around $34-$38k. KBB for the car is around $21k, then add the parts, most of which I didn't paid retail for, and that comes to about my ballpark guess as to what I'd sell it for. Telsa Roadster 2008-2009 is about $60k, but the 2010 2.0 and newer models are going for $80k because they are much nicer inside. I could also part out my car completely but that would take forever to sell all the parts and so much work, probably a couple years to sell all the parts.
Hummmmm.....

Buy a house and pay it off if you have that much money to invest in depreciating assets.

Decay107 07-19-2014 02:23 PM

I suspect at that asking price you would be sitting on it for a very long time.

cdrazic93 07-19-2014 02:32 PM

Youre not going to sell for that much.

Speed2th 07-19-2014 02:37 PM

with all of the depreciation factor in, i think you better hold on to your brz for as long as possible.

BRZPDX 07-19-2014 03:27 PM

you can list it at that price, hoping someone looking for the exact same set up stumbles upon it. Sort of like the "move me out" price for homes. Sometimes you get lucky.

Old technology, high repair price. For $65k you can get a brand new Porsche Boxster S!

Already have one. ;) Next step is kids as they suck $$ dry. ;)

I'm also considering keeping the BRZ and getting the Tesla model III, the model that's coming out in 2017 that will start at $35k and supposedly compete with the BMW 3 series. It may be too practical for me though being it's a 4 door sedan car. If they make it in a 2 door then perhaps. ;) I've also considered buying another Lotus Elise, but the prices are high since it's summer so perhaps I'll look around again in the winter.

Get a lotus!

I actually went to the Lexus dealership. An is250 start at 42k

The new Tesla is going to sell like hot cakes, better get on the presale early. I'm considering investing in Tesla heavily as well.

Have you driven a Roadster? They're cool, but not production-quality vehicles. The 2.0+ is much, much better but personally I couldn't live with one.

And as far as bang for your buck selling, you're best to part your mods out. I know you know that. But I doubt you'll get any interest at the price you're talking about.

I already had one so I already know what they are about so at least I'd know what I'd be getting into if I do get one.

I almost bought stock in Tesla when they went public and it was the only time I considered buying stock, but chose not to. I chose poorly. ;)

Yes I'll be preordering a Tesla model III once pre-orders become available, or at least that's the decision I'm leaning towards out of all my options. My second option I'm considering is buying a Zero S electric motorcycle. Test drove one and it was pretty nice. So easy to ride and still fast. Only maintenance would be brakes and tires.

I almost got to drive the roadster at a drive event but they mixed up my reserved spot. :( I had a Elise for a couple years so that's sort of similar, but not the same obviously.

I'm torn here. The T3 could be awesome especially if its AWD. I very much want to get into an electric sport vehicle next. Currently its either an unannounced Tesla coupe, or a BMW i8. My goal is one or the other in 4 years or less.

Stick to the BRZ.

Tainen 07-24-2014 08:59 PM

Why do you buy and sell cars every year or two(guessing from your sig)? It initially seems like you get bored with cars quickly, but then you're considering getting another lotus when you already had one before. It's confusing. You should probably be going for short term leases to appease that desire while limiting massive financial loss. Or buy older cars for much lower value to appease the desire. Essentially you'd be throwing away 20k in such a transaction like you describe.

You know me too well and I agree that I think I'll keep the car. I should keep and pay off at least one car in my life. ;)
