Toyota Celica GT

So I was never really into the car scene until the past year or two, but I often see Celicas still roaming the streets and always knew that they were somewhat "sporty". Did the Celica ever have the same allure and attractiveness as the BRZ/FRS back in its prime?

When I first saw a BRZ I was impressed, fascinated, and knew I wanted one in the future. I don't ever recall being as intrigued with the Celica - in my opinion I often overlooked it, or never noticed it. Sometimes I think they look nice, but then I stare at them a little longer and lose interest - especially the rear tail lights.

I already believe that the 86 will leave a legacy, but do you think the Celica ever had anything going for it?

malave7567 07-17-2014 02:39 PM

The only Celicas that had soul to me where when it was still RWD, after all, it spawned the Supra.
Those late 70's Celica GTs and early 80's Celica GT-S will always make me look twice. I would love to get my hands on one again.

edit: if i could get one of these... especially in white, I would not trade/sell it. I love me some 22RE engine.

The Celica GT4 was pretty sweet!

I agree. The GT-Fours were used in Toyota's rally efforts, and those are fun cars, just very hard to find.

Cliu91 07-17-2014 02:53 PM

Seems like alot more love for the Pre-90s Celicas. Shame that you don't really see them on the road nowadays. They are much more appealing than the newer versions!

The GT-Four's are amazing cars. This is a local's here in STL

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/image.../93/550639.jpg

He did the full conversion (GT-Four RC)

Only 1,700 ever imported, 34 per state to reach the states

MokSpeed 07-17-2014 03:18 PM

The FR-S/BRZ to me is basically a glorified Celica. FT-1 being the Supra.

If you're talking about the 70's/80's celicas above then yes I totally agree.

The FWD Celicas live on in the TC, not sure why that's so hard for people to swallow...

reeves 07-17-2014 04:31 PM

I had a 1982 celica GTS as my first car.. it was automatic but still loved it!

NWFRS 07-17-2014 04:56 PM

The 1971-74 Celicas are excellent. I would not hesitate to get into another. In my opinion, they are one of the best classic cars to drive. :-)

my father has a 1986 Celica GT-S convertible. That baby is his little pride and joy. A garage queen for sure. that was his first car he ever bought when he came to this country of Murica!

m.box.design 07-17-2014 09:39 PM

The last celica 2000-2005 was a great car. It lost a lot of its roots, it was strictly FWD, far gone from its RWD beginnings and devoid of all the AWD and turbo trims of the 90s. The 2zz engine was great, and it offered pretty good driving feel for a FWD. They were plenty fast for an n/a 4-banger; unfortunately it failed to defeat the Integra Type R.

Jegan_V 07-17-2014 09:47 PM

The Celicas have all been pretty good cars. I don't think any generation has actually been particularly bad. Even when it came to the FWD ones all are pretty good durable Toyota coupes. The final 7th gen Celica is actually a very good car, things it has going for it is its light weight, its more practical liftback configuration, and if you got the GT-S version you got that lovely Yamaha 2ZZ-GE. As far as its sporting potential goes, up against the likes of a Acura RSX Type-S, the Celica generally isn't as serious about cornering. However because of how the stiff the RSX is...the Celica is easily more bearable in daily driving, the RSX can be pretty hateful there. I like all the Celicas more than any tC.

Perhaps the 700 pounds the tC gained over the Celica has something to do with it.... I guess you are just better at swallowing that the rest of us

Nevermore 07-17-2014 10:16 PM

I never knew what the older Celicas looked like until recently and I have to say that I love that 70's fastback.

serialk11r 07-18-2014 07:18 AM

Meh, the way I see it is, if you want to go FF, you have a lot of choices aka all the Hondas, and picking a Celica over a Honda with a superior drivetrain is kind of dumb.

A 2014 Civic weighs more than a 1994 Civic, so does that make it any less of a Civic?

WolfpackS2k 07-18-2014 11:27 AM

The last gen Celica is a great little car. Very good handling and extremely light compared to today's offerings.

Yeah it kinda does. It's bigger than some Accords now.

In 1971 the Toyota Celica US Liftback weighed 2,571 lbs.
In 2006 the Toyota Celica weighed 2,650 lbs.
In 2013 the Scion Tc weighs 3,090 lbs.

Most models would be envious of just a 621 lb weight gain after 43 years on the market.

:iono:

Maybe my numbers are a bit off but doesn't seem like such a travesty to me, sure the Tc got a ton of bloat over the 6th gen celica, what car actually maintained weight from 2003-2013?

A 2014 Accord weights more than a 2001 Accord. Does that make it any less of an Accord?

FT86 is a true sports car. Celicas are sport coupes; nice and fun, but nearly as sporty.

Thanks, well this one was my grandmothers and she bought it new...was then given to my parents and now i have it. I got it with a blown head gasket and front end needing to be rebuilt among other things. Its not perfect, but its fun to drive around...now just need to save up to have the front seats redone.

Heres some more pics.

Grew up loving Celica's and ONLY Celica's! I've owned most of 80's, 90's and a 2000 Celica GT-S.

80's Celica's: Owned a 84 GTS and 89 ST. Slow but nice cars. LOVE the boxy look!

90's Celica's: Owned a ton from 90-99 Celica's. FWD or not, they were beautiful (baby Supra 94-99 Celica's), good handling and are reliable cars. Wished 94-99 Celica GT-FOUR's were imported that would've been awesome!! A friend of mine has a 95 Celica GT with a 3sgte swap and he's killing sTi's and Evo's.

2000 Celica GTS: LOVED the car. It was sleek, light and pretty quick. Loved the 6spd gear box.

My next Celica will be a search for a 1st gen Celica :)

They are fairly good looking cars if done right. Unfortunately there are many more poor examples than good ones driving around. I have an 02 GT and will keep it as long as possible. Simple maintenance has netted me almost 200k on the odo. After its taken me on road trips from Alaska to Arizona/Nevada and back multiple times with no issues whatsoever I owe it to her. She will be rewarded with a 2zz swap after I finish grad school:wub:. Here are some examples of nicer looking ones.

7thgen Celicas look way ahead of its time. Love the interior and the seats.

Atropine 07-18-2014 10:19 PM

Curse this thread!

I have been planning on one day picking a "classic car" to restore/freshen up and grow old with.

I had always thought it would be an AW-11 MR2 (my era and I have already owned 2 AW-11s and I regret selling them) or maybe a Datsun Z or even a Datsun 510...

Now looking looking at UltraFRS's Celica, and the one Hated1 posted...

I think I may have to save an old Celica...I love the looks of those old Celicas...

Though if a GT4 fell into my lap...I would be tempted.

xia 07-18-2014 10:20 PM

I love Celica's that are done right. Here are some examples of what I mean:

'72 Celica ST was my first car; love all the 70's pics! Thx

trd_kid 07-18-2014 11:22 PM

I always wanted 2 cars growing up : a mr2 or a celica . When time came around to buy my second car (only had my ford focus for like 8 months) my parents didn't feel comfortable letting me sell the focus to buy either an integra or celica , so I purchased the next best thing in my eyes : a scion tc. Kinda cool to see some of the parts being interchangeable between the 7th gen celica and first gen tc.

/rant

anyways maybe one day I'll be able to find me a first gen celica to park right next to my fr-s. :)

BlaineWasHere 07-19-2014 08:26 AM

The problem with the later FWD Celica is FWD Hondas...

daiheadjai 07-20-2014 01:20 AM

TBH, the Celica 7th gen looks as fresh to me now as it did 14 years ago - in some aspects, I actually prefer it to the BRZ.

I think Toyota had something special, but allowed it to languish (the lack of aftermarket support for the 2ZZ-GE is a real mistake on their part). They had a chance to knock the Integra off its pedestal (and the GT-S was definitely superior to the GSRs of the time, IIRC) - but the arrival of the RSX-S took the advantage back to Honda.

Still, even a lowly GT can be a great drive - I still think the idea of a 6,000rpm hot cam 2zz is more soulful than the FA20.
