PTUNING Plug and Play WMI (Water/Methanol Injection) System and ECUTek Tuning
As many of you know already know, we've been working for quite some time developing and perfecting our PTUNING PnP WMI System. In addition, we've also logged a substantial amount of time on the dyno in the past year or so to bring you the ultimate in WMI.
Having successfully used WMI on our own championship winning, 565whp 93 pump gas, Time Attack Scion tC, we've always been big fans of a properly set up and tuned WMI car. WMI, when properly implemented and dyno tuned can yield excellent results, especially on an engine like this that is so ridiculously knock limited due to the ultra-high factory compression ratio. WMI is an excellent alternative for FR-S/BRZ owners who do not have readily accessible E85 stations, like us. It's also a better alternative for those who need to leave their cars sitting for months at a time while on deployment, etc. Extensive dyno testing and tuning with our PTUNING FR-S Turbocharger System yielded solid results. On a 9.5psi tune on straight 93 pump gas we made around 320whp. With the additition of WMI and tuning with our custom PTUNING ECUTek tune, we made an additional 20whp at the same boost level. Aside from being able to run leaner AFR's and more timing, we're able to run more boost. We also managed to crack the 400whp barrier on our Dyno Dynamics Dyno with WMI and 93 pump gas. WMI allows us to reach MBT timing at boost levels that you would only expect to see when running E50 or higher. What this means to the owner looking for a solution to inconsistent performance on 93 or even crappy 91 pump gas is that you can now expect full power when on track. As everyone knows, heat soak causes power loss, even more so with this engine. The factory ECU uses continous knock feedback to keep your motor in one-piece when you're hammering on your car during hard driving conditions. WMI pulls heat away from the combustion chamber and effectively raises the gas octane rating in the process. We're still finishing up the PnP wiring harness. Implementing WMI on the FR-S/BRZ using our own PTUNING developed custom ECUTek RaceROM maps:
We've spent a lot of time developing our own custom ECUTek RaceROM maps to allow us to run one of the safest and most seamless possible WMI scheme ever seen on a factory ECU controlled engine. We wrote and dyno tested countless numbers of different custom maps before settling on just the right combination of custom written RaceROM maps. We plan on using these custom maps to create an integrated WMI control system for customer's who choose to have us dyno or ETune their WMI setup. Our PnP WMI System, when used in conjunction with an optional AEM WMI flow gauge will allow us to control all failsafe, fueling, timing, and boost parameters directly through the factory ECU using custom RaceROM maps. Our tunes will automatically know where to implement a boost fuel-cut (different for pump gas vs WMI) and what timing and AFR's to run and what boost to run too. It will also do this with closed-loop feedback boost control with optional boost by gear and/or boost by speed, also in implemented to run in closed-loop. Our custom maps will also include built-in safety parameters to alter boost based on oil temps, water temps, and even boosted air temps. We're also putting the finishing touches on WOT closed-loop fueling controls and AFR failsafe too. What does this all mean? You'll no longer be stuck limping around with a watered-down pump gas tune should your WMI system malfunction. WMI tank empty or WMI jet get clogged? The ECU will know what to do. WMI line pop off? The ECU will know what to do. We're no longer limited to just pulling timing, switching off the EBCS solenoid, or blinking a light when there is a problem with the WMI system. - Toan |

Is it possible to use Water/Ethanol mix instead of methanol ? I'm asking because methanol is illegal in my country and we don't have E85 stations, but we have a lot of vodka! :) Expensive but i would only use it in race conditions.

Is there any data or estimation as to how many seconds of WOT that can be supplied based on that tank size?

For the average person using this on the street, you would likely only need to look at the reservoir with each fill-up. Most folks check their oil levels with each fill up anyhow so it's perfect. For the person that is looking to use this system for HPDE use, I'd say that the reservoir should have no issue keeping up with the capacity of the fuel tank. - Toan |
Will this kit fit right in with RHD cars? Without your tune, is it possible to run other failsafe tunes from my local ecutek tuner?

Where do you get your supply of methanol. I found it difficult to source methanol and either bought Boost Juice or Heet bootles.

Boost Juice purchased from Summit Racing in a 4 gallon case may be cheaper than buying direct from Snow Performance. I need to check on that again though. The other alternative would be to just use Peak (rated to -20F) Windshield Washer Fluid. This is readily available from Wal-Mart and contains about 30 percent methanol. Avoid the ones that have lower freezing point or the Prestone versions as those will contain Glycol, which is a no no. While washer fluid does contain a tiny bit of detergent and coloring, like the Boost Juice, we've never had any issues with it. Our lead tech here has been using the same brand Peak washer fluid for the past 7 years on his turbocharged xA and has logged over 250k miles on the same WMI pump and control mechanism. My order of preference would be: 1) mix my own 50/50 mix using VP methanol and distilled water 2) Boost Juice 3) Peak washer fluid with 30 percent methanol 4) straight distilled water - Toan |

Here are a couple of installed pics. Our PTUNING WMI System will require the use of a mini battery. Our billet battery tray is designed to fit over half a dozen style mini batteries. Shown in the pics below is the ultra-light 5 lb. Shorai lithium battery. For PTUNING customers who already have our mini-battery tray system, we can sell you the WMI System minus the battery tray.

Toan spent a good and much appreciated 30 minutes on the phone with me talking about the WMI setup for my personal car which probably piloted some of these awesome custom maps they now can provide. This is, imo, the best possible setup for people that want to run 93 octane pump gas, and still make excellent power without having to worry about wmi failure, or running out of water / meth. This is a very well thought out system. Precisely why I brought my car 450 miles to the shop ;)

We're currently working on converting this bundle of wires into a clean PnP WMI harness.
Shown in the pic is our custom WMI pump mounting bracket. We've designed the bracket using PEMS inserts to make pump installation simpler. No more messing with tiny standard sized nuts and bolts. Also, the bracket is designed to fit on both the driver or passenger side bumper supports for installation versatility. For those that have asked about NA testing, we'll eventually be testing our WMI system on one of our tech's NA FR-S with PTUNING Exhaust and 4-1 Header. We just finished putting together our first production PnP WMI wiring harness. We're waiting on a few new waterproof connector plugs for the pump to arrive before we install and test this first production WMI system.
Since our WMI tank and battery mounting system is made out of aluminum, the entire assembly is very lightweight. Our WMI/battery tray assembly (minus pump) with a full tank of 50/50 water methanol mix is only 14.25 lbs. If we couple this with our current 4.5 lb Shorai Lithium Ion battery, we end up at just under 19 lbs. Has anyone with the AVO kit had one of these installed yet? I want one for my car, but I would like to know what I'm getting into prior to dropping $1000 canadian pesos.
Also, does this replace the factory washer bottle? I was reading something on the website about the factory washer bottle baffle and the low fluid warning light? Anyways, some clarification would be great :) Also, I have the FBM oil cooler kit mounted in my passenger side fender well, so I'm hoping it bolts into the drivers side and will clear intercooler piping. Thanks |
I have a similar WMI system (Hydramist, basically Aquamist controlled by Hydra standalone) and I'm using the window washer bottle for the meth tank.
It holds a little more than a gallon, and works great. |

Since the pump is tucked underneath the bumper beam arm, it should clear your AVO intercooler and silicon IC pipe just fine. What will you get for $1,000 Canadian pesos? :D - If you run the 1000cc jet with a 50/50 mix, you'll likely have the ability to tune for mbt all the way to 15-17psi. You won't have to constantly fiddle around with the timing to make the engine happy. The WMI provides immense detonation suppression and cooling, something that this ultra-high compression engine really needs. :cheers: |
