Anyone ever done this to their car or heard of it?

Vic_RSA 07-15-2014 02:34 PM

Quite a few have - sadly I'm not one of them and my car has some serious roadrash. A good investment in hindsight.

Suddenly... 07-15-2014 02:58 PM

I have it on my car. It's brilliant for small rocks and dirt , aka day-to-day things. You can see it on the car but just barely. Would recommend it to anyone:thumbup:

Same here - had the complete front done and I'm VERY glad I did.

Die$eL 07-17-2014 03:24 AM

costs?

Freedom 07-17-2014 03:33 AM

Thanks guys, I have seen people use Plasti Dip for the same thing. It is less permanent but will be a lot cheaper.

I really cringe thinking about the adhesive going onto the paint job :iono:.

sav 07-17-2014 05:07 AM

I think it was around R7k. No need to cringe, it's been around for many years. Best job so far for me was VPS Ednvale. They wrap around the panel edges so it looks muchess visible.

Is this what the Americans call Opticoat?
I'm sad that I never did something like that because I'm accumulating a lot of nicks and chips up front :(
@sav - must say that yours is quite inconspicuous. I've seen your car many times and I've never noticed it. :)

Suddenly... 07-17-2014 05:33 AM

I didn't have the VPS on my car I had the Lumar competitor put on (As far as I remember) the cost was about 7K. I have been extremely happy with it. I don't know much about plasti-dip but I can tell you it's going to be a lot less resilient when compared to the VPS. If you have a chance to run by one of the VPS installers get a look at the sheet they use. It's really thick. I understand you not wanting to adhere straight to the paint but IMHO I would rather have that then plasti-dip. I don't know how long they recommend before having the VPS replaced but it's probably about 4-5 years (I speak under correction), and to me after owning the car for that long a period of time, it has more then paid back for itself, even if it does mean repainting the bumper when they reapply it. If you do go with the plasti-dip please keep me updated I am interested to see how durable it is in that setting

Probably a similar product - VPS uses 3M products.

That's good to know. :D I've had VPS done before but Edenvale is just exceptionally good.

Here is vid, the guy had plasti dip on his car for about a year (so he says :P).

There is a VPS shop here in Centurion, Ill find out from them what they will charge when I get a chance.

Plasti Dip for sure wont be as strong but it does look like it comes off easy with no residue.

Is your whole car covered in it or just the front?

sav 07-17-2014 05:48 AM

-Full bonnet
-Full bumper
-Full fenders
-Mirrors
-Small piece on top of the rear bumper
-Headlights
-Fog lights (replaced fog lights since and wrapped myself)

I would really not trust any other shop to do it though. I've looked at other cars and it's obvious they don't have the same skill or experience as the Edenvale branch. You have to look at 2 cars side to side to see what I mean.

Suddenly... 07-17-2014 05:57 AM

I'm surprised by that I gotta say. That came off more easily than I expected after a year. I think you have probably seen this thread but it is another option (the level of inconvenience of reapplying every 12 months is up to you :P)

Freedom 07-17-2014 06:00 AM

I called the chaps here in Centurion. This stuff is not cheap :eyebulge:.

R22k for the whole car.
R4k for the front bumper (not the bonnet).
R10k (roughly) for front, side, rear fenders and I think bonnet too.

I'll call Edenvale too since it looks like they are the ones to go too.

Suddenly... 07-17-2014 06:04 AM

I agree with Sav that you need a trusted installer to get the stuff done just right. I haven't paid too much attention to mine but I know that in Durban it's roughly 14k for the entire vehicle. I can give you their number if you are interested. When I got my bumper redone there was a 458 Italia and a bright yellow C63 having it put on at the same time, so I would assume the people who did it at least know a little.

Cool, not sure if it would be worth doing the rear fenders?

I already have a few stone chips on the under side of my rear bumper :(

I spoke to Edenvale branch sounds like similar pricing.
They did mention to me that the film changes colour over time and putting it on a white car can make it more visible :sigh:.

Moe 07-17-2014 06:53 AM

I've seen a few cars that have had these films removed after several years. Sadly, you can see a huge difference between the ageing paint where it wasn't covered vs where it was.

I guess it's a catch-22 between that and having chips.

sav 07-17-2014 06:57 AM

That's why you need to do full panels. Remove, then machine polish on the remaining panels and you're good to go.

Die$eL 07-17-2014 07:46 AM

I think i rather have chips than two tone colours on the car...

Perhaps a coat of clear plastidip... Yes it will not be anywhere as much protection as VPS but it will probably be better than nothing...

Moe 07-17-2014 08:31 AM

Another view altogether: Take care of your car, polish it, wax it, drive it, talk to it, enjoy it.

If there's chips or small damages, so be it. It's a drivers cars. It's meant to be fun and not a garage queen. Forget about what your car will look like in 2, 3, 5, 10 years time when it's time to get rid of it - rather when you get rid of it, feel good that you've had your fun with it (whilst still taking some good care of it).

R20k for VPS vs R20k to replace tyres, fuel, etc you've burnt... you choose.

If you bought it to be a collectors item in 20 years time, my advise sucks :D

Hmmm, the above makes me think twice about why I'm even contemplating getting rid of my car :bonk:

sav 07-17-2014 08:33 AM

LOL!!

Screw that, I will do everything I can to protect it, while driving it every day and enjoying as much as possible.

Don't worry the same thing went through my mind.

A lot of the times when you try so hard to prevent something you end up causing more damage.:23:

But I love how my car looks I want to keep it mint forever.

Don't get too excited, they're the same as the old ones, just not staggered to make rotation easier.
All four are the deeper dish "rear" style.
I'm very happy with my old wheels - I just need another set for track tyres.

17'' x 7.5J ET35 A-Line GTR Sport

The second pic is what they look like on the car, but all 4 are like the rears in that pic.

sav 07-17-2014 11:39 AM

Cool!

I have not yet rotated my tyres...

Die$eL 07-18-2014 01:50 AM

I'm going back to the 18's this weekend :brokenheart:

My sister wants to use the 86 as her wedding car... + i have to raise the suspension or it wont survive the durban driveways... :brokenheart::brokenheart:

On the plus side, i got to waste ALOT of tyre this week in anticipation of the change
got to a point where the front of the car stood at the same place and the back just kept rotating round

Enjoy Dbn! If it wont survive the driveways, take it sideways...lol:D

Will the Drift event for TTCC still be happening this month?

Anyone been to the VW "Drag wars" event last weekend?
(Was planning to go, then saw some guys from the VW clubs talk bullshit on the TTCC forum...so decided not to support idiots)
(No offence to the VW/GTi club guys, but their attitude is :barf:)

Any other events this month that you guys are going for?

Freedom 07-21-2014 03:35 AM

I wont be doing the VPS and the only reason is that on a white car it goes yellow and is quite visible after a while :( .

sav 07-21-2014 03:38 AM

Says who? I've had it on my car for 2 years(next month) and it still looks like the day it was fitted. No discoloration. It's the cheap knock off stuff that goes yellow, especially if you don't wax it often enough.

Well the guy at edenvale actually told me that and then I asked my service mechanic about VPS and he mentioned the same thing to me. I didn't even ask him if it gets discolored he but he still brought it up. But you say it is still fine so :iono:. Maybe it only turns yellow after 10 years :bonk:.

Could you PM me a pic of your car or post one here please.

sav 07-21-2014 04:03 AM

LOL! Dunno, Marc at Edenvale warned me that the colour would be slightly off after applying the film but nothing about discoloration with age.

I'll find a pic and post a bit later.

It seems the drift event will not be happening. It's a long story around why.

We are still keen to run one though. Maybe later in the year or early next year.

Can't see the difference :w00t:.

I think ill make a decision if I ever see your car at one of the events. I really want to do something like this because going to the skid pad coats the car in borehole water which is heavy in minerals and can damage your paint.

After Sunday at the skid pan my car looked brown. Even with a coat of wax on my car the stuff didn't come off with just a rinse as I was hoping.

My rear tires after two months already need rotating :eyebulge: (about half the tread compared to the front). Please no more drift events :D.
