Window Tint

Has anyone had their windows tinted from anywhere else besides the factory? I want to have it done this week but I'm a little worried about the "simple shut windows." The fact that they roll down a half inch or so every time you open the door scares me. If I remember right (its been years since I got windows tinted) you can't put the windows down for 24-48 hours. Anyone have any advice or info on this?

I had mine tinted Thursday, it's no big deal. All the tinter has to do is unscrew the contact in the door sill on the body side. It's a black rubber piece with a screw in the bottom. This is used to roll the window down when the door is opened. It closes a circuit which sends voltage to roll the window down. After they're through tinting the windows they just reinstall the screw.

IceCreamMan 05-26-2012 11:12 PM

I'm not worried that they can't do it, I'm just worried when the doors open it will ruin the bottom of the tint when the window rolls down.

kmbkk 05-26-2012 11:43 PM

It shouldn't be a problem. Just ask them to put a little heat to the windows to make sure they're dry. It only takes a minute with a heat gun.

kmbkk 05-26-2012 11:48 PM

At least that's what my tinter did. He's been tinting windows for over 35 years, so I trust him.

Subie 05-27-2012 12:25 AM

The window tint option for the FR-S is not factory tint per se. It's a port-installed option, so it's window film just like any aftermarket option. If the port can do it, any quality aftermarket installer ought to be able to, too.

civicdrivr 05-27-2012 01:15 AM

I had the same concern and asked the tint shop what I should do, they said dont worry about it.

I didnt and it looks great. :iono:

IceCreamMan 05-27-2012 06:14 AM

Thanks for the reassurances!! I should definitely be done in the next few days!

SioXie101 05-29-2012 05:34 PM

never had any tint done in my car unless it comes installed from the factory. Aftermarket is always the way to go or a local tinting shop. Cheaper and if the work is guaranteed then you have some peace of mind.

civicdrivr 05-29-2012 07:05 PM

^ Yea, the tint shop I go to has been in business for years and they stand behind their work with a lifetime warranty. All 5 window cars (they considered the FR-S a 5 window job even though its technically 7) cost $185.

IceCreamMan 05-30-2012 06:29 PM

Just went and had it done today, looks awesome!

Draco-REX 05-30-2012 08:22 PM

wow that looks dark. What % did you go for?

The windows seem to have a bit of tint stock, so I'm on the fence between 50% and 35%.

IceCreamMan 05-30-2012 10:37 PM

It's 15% all the way around, my first "off road" tint job so we'll see how much attention it gets!

Draco-REX 05-30-2012 10:49 PM

I predict a fix-it ticket in your future.

kmbkk 05-31-2012 12:23 AM

Maybe not. I drove around with 5% all the way around for 2.5 years on my previous car and never was stopped. I don't think it had anything to do with the sheriff's sticker on the side of my car though :)

BTW, I got 15% all the way around as well!

DarrenDriven 05-31-2012 03:15 AM

I see someone paid $185 for 15% all the way around. Anyone else get quotes yet? I am going to get mine done ASAP but probably 35%... maybe 15-20%, not sure yet. I'd like to compare quotes.

Symbiont 05-31-2012 04:18 AM

I'm getting it done for around 125

#87 05-31-2012 04:46 AM

Be careful with those bargain price tint shops being done out of someones front door. The price may seem too good to pass up but if you get a scratch or ding do you trust them to own up?

IceCreamMan 05-31-2012 06:01 AM

The price was $100 + tax for the "legal" job, + 15 extra for the darker side windows

The dealership quoted me at $255 for tinting, which seems a little high. I'm looking around at other options, but I don't know of any reputable sources in my area.

civicdrivr 06-01-2012 06:11 PM

I doubt youll get a fix-it ticket in FL, unless theyve started coming down on dark tint. My brother lived there for years with 18% tint on a dark green car with black interior and never got a ticket.

kmbkk 06-01-2012 06:15 PM

Mine was $160 with a lifetime warranty.

That's because the dealer probably outsources tint to a local tint shop. That's what they do here.

Go to a tint shop in your area and I'd bet it will be around $100 less than the dealer.

DarrenDriven 06-02-2012 03:03 AM

I'm driving to Tacoma tomorrow to get my windows tinted at a shop where I used to work. I need the mileage to get through my break-in anyway, haha.

Dealership quoted me something close to $300 on the CX-5 we bought recently too, but the salesman told me to just go down the road to the shop that the dealer would have do it anyway, and the price would be at least $120 less.

Galpin dealerships rule.

How did they tint the rear window with the 3rd brake light? Im gonna get tint too, but Im worried about how they're going to get around the 3rd brake light that sits in the center of the rear seats.

I got quotes for 140-150

jarviz 08-08-2012 09:42 AM

I think I paid 200 cash, supposed to a reputable shop and comes with lifetime warranty. No bubbles yet

See my post here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...7&postcount=22

I paid $180 for 20% all around on my BRZ with a strip on the top of the windshield.

They have come down on it. In Oralndo you can't take a car downtown with illegal tint without getting pulled over 100% of the time.

Had limo tint on one of my cars and got tired of being pulled over for it so I have been doing legal limit since them. It is also dangerous to go too dark, can't see at night when it rains.

jpit 08-08-2012 07:09 PM

I believe that the BRZ is delivered with 90% tint. If you go with a 35% does it make it a 25% tint or a 31.5% tint.?

ShoGun 08-08-2012 07:13 PM

I went with a 50% tint (legal limit) all around. $190 total. No bubbles. Reputable Tint shop in North Carolina

kidgogeta 08-08-2012 07:16 PM

I went with Llumar 20% tint for $190 for the 3 rear

Hey @Symbiont - mind if I ask where & what percentages you got?? Since you're local to me, I might actually be able to go to the same place, though, I don't wanna get ticketed if it's too dark... It's getting toasty in this heat we're having driving around without tint.

Hix 08-08-2012 07:48 PM

Ceramic costs 250-300 for the car and if you wanted to get really good stuff the Solar Adaptive Transition tint is 600+

Huper Optik would be the best if you actually care with Llumar being up there as well.

Cheap shitty tint that you could buy in a roll from Walmart would be the 150 stuff

BTW, they take the third brake light out during tint. I saw that asked somewhere up there.

Subie 08-08-2012 07:57 PM

You really don't have to remove the rear shelf to tint the rear window. A local shop did my BRZ in 3M Crystalline without doing so and there's absolutely no sign that they did not do so.

ABQautoxer 08-08-2012 08:01 PM

Yeah the thing no one is posting is the film they are getting applied. Just within the llumar line there are 3 main levels that vary by $150. I'm having mine done on Friday with CTX. 20% is legal here but it comes in 30 and 15% but I can't decide which I'd prefer. I've had 3M color stable 20% on most of my cars recently but want to see if the CTX blocks heat better here in the high desert.

pinoyplaya 08-08-2012 08:38 PM

Stupid MN laws only allows 50% or higher :(

35 front/25 rear

I haven't worried about the percents at all, but if I do feel worried, I'd just roll down my windows until they drive away. :)
