To drive or not drive without a hood...

I'm picking up a new seibon cf hood tomorrow, and I'm thinking of instead of borrowing a truck, I can remove the stock, hood drive 65 mph on the interstate for 100 mi (hoodless), and install the hood upon pickup.

Good or bad idea...

Weight decrease and extra cooling to the engine, why not? LOL

litemup 07-13-2014 03:06 AM

Any chance of rain? Serpentine belt might get a little squeaky. Other than that, I wouldn't think twice about it.

Ok cool, 90 and sunny in Northern CA

You know a bird is going to shit on you as soon as you take the hood off. And again when you put the new one on.

You'll just look like a ricer that's all, hoodless and with the cf hood.

Unless you plan on installing hood pins right away I think that's a bad idea.

Dake 07-13-2014 10:57 AM

My only concern are your local laws. Will the coppers harass you? If it's down the street, that'd be one thing - but 100 miles means lots of opportunities for police curiosity.

Personally, I wouldn't drive 65mph with my engine unprotected. The roads may be better where you are, but in NY, there are lots of debris that might get picked up by the cars in front of you.

I think you'll be fine, just make sure you have all the tools/hardware you need.

Mikem53 07-13-2014 11:43 AM

Just do it.. Don't overthink it.

R.S-HawK 07-13-2014 12:43 PM

Why not just TAKE the tools and do the removal/install on the spot...

does the stock hood fit in the car to take it home? i think that's his whole point of doing this - or get a vehicle large enough to pick up the new hood and bring it home to swap.

chaoskaze 07-13-2014 12:56 PM

Find your friend & treat him pizza then go pick up hood together!

......I wouldn't drive hoodless & why burrow when u can just ask ur friend to go pick up with you? Unless you have no friend.....then......

Probably not, and it sounds like he doesn't actually want to get a pickup.

dnieves 07-13-2014 01:09 PM

I think a cop will stop you, if you get any road debris lodged in your engine compartment it's not going to be cheap to fix. What if it rains? I suppose the idea is not having to lug a second hood home. I'd sooner borrow a truck or strap it to the roof of somebody's Hyundai or KIA instead.

HeadBanger 07-13-2014 01:14 PM

You guys sound like a bunch whiny aunts.

Nothing has ever fallen out of the sky and hit my hood.

When it rains there's still water that can splash up into the engine bay. I can't see water coming into contact with the engine causing problems unless you're running some crazy ITB set up

kodyo 07-13-2014 01:54 PM

My guess is there are no laws that prevent someone from going hoodless. It's a bad idea long term because debris will fall into the bay while parked and people might screw with your engine, but I've never had anything happen while driving that would cause any damage.

Bring rope and tape in case you can't get it to fit right away so you can still hold it in place if you need to.

Reaper 07-13-2014 02:04 PM

lack of hood pins is a viable concern for 100 miles on the freeway.

xITSxTHExPOPEx 07-13-2014 02:25 PM

I spent a few days driving my old monte carlo back and forth to work with no hood and no problems with the police. Just be sure to stay far behind traffic to avoid having anything thrown at the expensive bits. Hell it rained one of the days I did that and I just threw some plastics bags over the fuse boxes and coil packs and didnt have any issues lol.

xITSxTHExPOPEx 07-13-2014 02:26 PM

Plus these cars are still pretty new, I'm sure lots of people are curious as to whats under the hood, give em a show lol.

Fish 07-13-2014 02:27 PM

Pretty sure that it's illegal to go hoodless. Probably because of pedestrian safety requirements. I remember also hearing that the air scoops/intakes cannot be higher than 4" of the hood surface or something like that.

It's different by State. Some states it's illegal to drive with missing body panels, other States don't care. And of course even if you're in a State that doesn't have a law on the books, it doesn't mean you won't get a cop who feels like harassing you.

But either way, it's probably less than a fifty percent chance anything bad will happen.

Takumi788 07-18-2014 11:55 AM

Do it. I used to all the time with my S13 (because i'm a ricer and i had to work on it all the time anyway.)

Just dont leave the car too long...One person gave a quick yank to my boost controller at a car meet once. Luckly there were plenty of zip ties holding it to the car. lol

stevemp5 07-18-2014 11:58 AM

Do it and take a rolling shot picture!
