Why do people want a fast car?
 

I don't get it. The highest speed limit i have seen is 70 so you can push 80-85 and thats abt it.

Also what does racing another person accomplish? Maybe i am missing something.

People want a fast car because fast cars are fun. Whether you take them to a track and really stretch their legs or whether you just want to get to the speed limit as fast as you can, it's just fun. Some people want fast cars just to say they have a fast car. I don't need a Ford GT, but I sure do want one.

Smashing down on the go pedal and being pushed into your seat is just an awesome feeling.

This! It's not necessarily the top speed that's exciting, it's feeling of being pushed back in your seat and the car thrusting forward. It's similar to the rush you get from a roller coaster only better :confused0068:

For some reason the 'pizza boy' quote was the first thing that came to mind. To answer your question though, I think it's just the internal instinct of a car guy. To me, it's not really about having a FAST car (hence why I bought a BRZ) but I do like the idea of taking something ordinary, and making it perform extraordinary. In terms of buying a car that is already fast, I think that it goes a bit beyond just the capable speed. The idea that a car can go above and beyond normal performance characteristics interests me.

Did they start putting speed limits at the tracks?

In all serious I'm a fan of "more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" but I get the appeal of breaking the highest local speed limit in under 6 seconds. Lots of people love an easy thrill from crappy tv shows to fast food to V8's to hookers to angry birds to drugs, who are you to judge?

Different strokes and all that jazz, the guys who look at sports cars and say "can't fit very much in that." or "mileage must be terrible" and you look back and think "how does he stay awake on his commute without amphetamines?" walk a mile in his shoes and then you'll be a mile away and have his shoes.

In Germany have autobahn there no exist the speed limit. So if anyone live there its odd they have fast cars. I bet the 95% of ppl cant go fast in slow car.
If you cant go fast with 99hp car dont expect will do it in 999hp car.

My dad is fond of saying that you buy a fast car so that you don't have to drive fast. The power is there when you need it. A slow car can only move slowly. When it's necessary to accelerate quickly, the slow car is limited, where the fast car isn't.

For example, I rented a Dodge Avenger that was a miserable dog of a car. It got me stuck in a left turn lane on the highway outside the Knoxville airport. The only gaps in oncoming traffic were too small to shoot with that piece of shit. If I had tried it, the car wouldn't have made it across in time, and I would have gotten smashed. So I was stuck there for almost ten minutes before there was finally a lull in traffic large enough to get across.

There are plenty of times when maneuverability or the ability to accelerate quickly can get you out of danger or just out of a jam. If you use that extra capability when you need it, you don't get caught up in everyone else's drama, so you still get where you need to go without having to drive fast the rest of the time.

You're confused. That's in the domain of large diesel pickups. Fast cars are ok and even preferable if you're adequate. I you're hung then small maneuverable cars are the ticket.

Because:

1) Fast cars are fun
2) Fast cars are really fun
3) Fast cars are exciting
4) Racetracks exist
5) Speed limits at racetracks don't exist

Oh, and finally...

6) Fast cars are fun

Acceleration is what people are after, not top speed.

Acceleration is useful all the time.

This question has been on mind as well. I've been thinking about going stage 1 (+30 hp/70 tq) or stage 2 (+50 hp/80 tq) on my GTI, but not sure it's worth it for a car that sees the track maybe once or twice per year.

I've had some pretty quick 300+ hp cars in the past (STI, 350z, Boxster S), but the speed kind of wore off after a while. Not entirely convinced this time will be different, but everyone seems to say it's a must-have mod.

Do you get bored of it? yes.
Is it still nice? Yes.

Speed is fun, when you can use it. Which isn't often enough to warrant owning a very fast street car. It's all egotism, and it's pointless. I don't care if your car is faster than mine; you can't drive it any faster than I can drive mine.

It's like owning a rocket launcher. Good for you, shame you'll never fire it.

I see so many people saying "you can't use it on the street" or things similar to that. My FRS is my daily and I have an SRT-4 with a little over 400whp and it is decently quick. I take it out maybe once or twice a week and when I do I make sure I take it on nice open roads where I can open it up and have some fun.

Now I'm not saying I'm doing 160mph runs down the freeway or am racing in and out of traffic, just a few 3rd and 4th gear pulls on empty open roads. I love how everyone acts like they don't go a mph over the speed limit and follow every traffic law to the tee, because I know that's complete crap lol

Driving a car fast is an extension of the ego. Driving a fast car while you cannot drive fast is overcompensation :D (or you admit to this and are actively working on becoming fast, in which case you're showing that you're being a man and kudos to you ;) )
