Cat pee inside won't come out

The short of the story is my girlfriend's cats Peed in my car and I don't know where. I took it to a detailing shop to get the entire interior shampooed and cleaned. I told the guy about the cat pee and he tried his best but the smell is back. Even worse on humid days.

I long for that new car smell I once had. My car is only a year old and would still have that smell if it weren't for the cat pee

I am wondering if anybody has any ideas.

sshole 07-08-2014 01:25 PM

It's probably soaked into the seat cushions or carpet padding by now. It won't be easy, but try the following:

Remove all seats, remove all carpeting, steam clean interior to best of ability without introducing damage to electronic devices, febreeze the shit out of it, clean the seats (remove seat covers, somehow clean the cushions, reassemble after drying thoroughly), reinstall interior.

tobin 07-08-2014 01:39 PM

Get your car into a pitch black garage. A black light will show you where the stain is. It doesn't take much urine, so look carefully. Get something like this from PetSmart and completely soak the area. It will never get back to the new car smell, but it will help a lot.

aakash 07-08-2014 01:49 PM

Yeah the black light should pin point the ammonia that you may be smelling

sluflyer06 07-08-2014 01:57 PM

Not to jump the gun but I'd guess once you find the spot, you will probably need to replace whatever the pee is on to get rid of the smell.

stugray 07-08-2014 02:00 PM

I want to hear the "long story".

Let me guess: Cat got accidentally locked in the car overnight?

Turbo95eg6 07-08-2014 02:05 PM

Cat pee is the fucking worst… OP, does your GF's place smell like piss too? I dated a girl once with the same issue and it was a deal breaker.

Black light of course! Fantastic idea.

Between the two of you those ideas should really help. I'll report back after trying. Thanks!

I'm more curious why he was transporting his gf's cat, assuming she had a fully working automobile.

long story: gf and myself moved across the country. All of our crap in a uhaul and my car on a trailer attached to the haul. The cats were going ballistic in the cab with us and mid you this is a 15+ hour drive. So we covered the entire interior of my car with all the moving blankets we had and then put them in there. turns out that wasn't enough protection. i would have planned it out better but we both have very demanding jobs and i was on a tight deadline and pulling all nighters leading up to the move (i write orchestral sound design music for movie trailers)

I like your job--must be pretty sweet to go see trailers with your work in it.

But there are these things called "travel carriers" that generally keep the cats contained. They're like $10-20 each and they would have been fine. Pissed off, but fine.

Thank you! Its a pretty sweet job I must admit.

Yeah we have those. The gf refused to keep them caged up. I wasn't about to get into a massive fight right before getting into the car with her for 15 hours. Who knows maybe I should have. It's in the past now so not much I can do except learn from my mistakes

I know you're trying to keep the peace, but if that's the case, it should be her job to clean your car. I'm not going to pretend to know the dynamics of your relationship, but if she's not offering to clean it for you or at least help, that's pretty telling right there. You aren't married, got to protect your own property dude. If it were me, I would have put my foot down and demanded they be in the carriers if they were going to be in my car.

Unsolicited advice aside, I hope the smell comes out. This is certainly a mistake you will learn from.

Kronos 07-08-2014 05:34 PM

She paid for the detailing. But it seems to be still there so I'm just asking for advice. I appreciate your concern. let's remember to keep on topic.

Cat piss is very very difficult to remove. The crystals in the piss is the problem. It won't necessarily harm the metal, but any carpet, foam, or cloth will need to be replaced. I have a lot of experience with cleaning it. Baking soda and vinegar is your friend. At the end of the day it is just a car. I love my girlfriend and my cats. I would give up my car in a heartbeat for them.

You can also use an organic stain removal product. It contains a good bacteria that could help. Luckily, auto carpet is unlike house carpet and you may be able to save it.

sirisvirus 07-09-2014 09:58 AM

Baking soda in your carpet take a brush and get it down in the fibers. Do that a couple time it will get the smell out. My wife dropped old coffee in my eclipse the smell was horrid but the baking soda pulled that smell right out I only had to do it twice.

I haven't had it in a car before, but the wife's cat likes to pee in my computer chairs. Only way I've found to remove the smell is a bottle from Walmart, I'll get the name of the spray when I get home. Spray it down liberally. Then let it sit outside in the sun. Spray down with water. Repeat and repeat some more until it's gone. Sun and water help allot. Now obviously this means you will have to remove whatever is affected from the vehicle.

Kronos 07-09-2014 01:29 PM

these are all fantastic suggestions! thank you all of you.

ill start with the home remedies then move on to different store brands that were mentioned if i have to.

this pee is doomed!

off to get a black light and start the process.

tonyfrs86 07-09-2014 02:03 PM

its not a cleaner more of a nasty air neutrilizer. its called ozium.. i used that when i had to make store run for work and got fish juice on my passenger seat. now that was a bad smell! car baking in 100 degree weather during the summer. i would gag everytime i opened the car.

azian_advanced 07-09-2014 02:57 PM

i used to work for a carpet cleaning business and we'd use a commercial grade hydrogen peroxide (or you can use the same ones from the drug store) for all pet urine stains. if they're on the carpets only, then just put some in a spray bottle, apply it on the carpet, and place a dry cloth with a stack of books on top to apply pressure. leave it for 10 mins and repeat as needed. then spray heavily with soapy water and shop vac it up.

Not sure if this will work, but I heard if you take a chlorine tablet and leave it in your car on a hot sunny day, with the windows up, it should help eliminate the odor :iono:

I'm not a chemical expert, but I am an engineer, and that sounds like a great way to get a chemical burn and inhalation damage when you open the door.

I'm interested in the working solution for this. I've run into issues with cat piss and have found it's extremely, extremely difficult, borderline impossible to remove. Fortunately none have been in my car... I wish you all the luck in the world!

Worst case, interior parts are all replaceable without too much difficulty. Even the floor liner, it's tedious and time intensive to remove all the plastic panels, clips, and seat brackets, etc, but not difficult.

Thanks I'll definitely post my results and how things turn out.

Very reassuring to hear the interior is not to hard to replace. Once I find the problems areas with the black light i could just replace those parts if nothing seems to work. Thanks for that idea. Very helpful :)

Natures Miracle. - check it out.

http://www.natures-miracle.com/produ...rine-odor.aspx

Always test surfaces to be treated for color fastness by applying to a hidden area and wiping with a cloth. If color is removed from the test area, do not use Nature’s MiracleŽ Just for Cats™ Urine Destroyer on this surface.
Always use Nature’s MiracleŽ Just for Cats™ Urine Destroyer at full strength for best results.
Use Nature’s MiracleŽ Just for Cats™ Urine Destroyer before any other product as cleansers and detergents may chemically “set” the stain.
Nature’s MiracleŽ Just for Cats™ Urine Destroyer is not recommended for use on silks, leather, or suede.

youre better than me!! I would have told my gf youre out of your damn mind to think i would let your stinky ass cats in my brand new car caged or uncaged! lol I would have made her caged them up in the uhaul cabin right there where her feet were. and how could you not want 15hrs of silence ;P lol So relaxing.

Sorry this happened bro! hopefully it comes out!

PS: I hate cats :)

Should have rephrased my post. Of course, after doing this, you would want to leave your windows open the next day and let the car air out :bonk:

Or just keep your face out of the immediate area when you air the car out after.

Katapaltes 07-10-2014 10:09 AM

While most all cats hate to be in moving cars, they often feel safer if they're in those travel kennels vs. being allowed to roam about the car.

Cliu91 07-10-2014 11:01 AM

The cat is clearly marking it's territory.
OP, you have two options:

1) Pee on your car to reclaim that territory
and/or
2) Pee on the cat to assert your dominance

This is the only way to regain control of your life.

White64Goat 07-10-2014 12:28 PM

For odor absortion, you can try a bag of REGULAR charcoal briquettes, NOT MATCH LIGHT !!!!... REGULAR kind. Slit bag down the middle and spread it open a little. This also works for refrigerators/freezers if you're going to store them for a while. It won't remove the stink from the source, but it will absorb it. Probably the only way to get rid of it at the source is to remove/replace whatever got pissed on.

CamryDS 07-10-2014 08:02 PM

only home remedy that closely worked was vinegar and water... but that sucked more.
I definitely suggest getting nature's miracle -- a gallon for 17 dollars at pet club. get the Advanced formula (red bottle).

You will carry it with you everywhere if you have a pet. My dog does not go in my 86 ever. he's allowed to pounce on my camry though =)

Kronos 07-10-2014 09:08 PM

Thank you for the further suggestions. They will be added to my arsenal when I go at it this weekend. Got a hand held black light today so step one complete. And that you for the laugh @Cliu91. Told my gf and she said to definitely pee all over the cats. Haha

Fastbrew 07-10-2014 09:58 PM

Next time put the cat under the hood!
