SoCal FRS/BRZ dealers to Avoid and buy from

We have a review's list of dealers to avoid according to the General FRS/BRZ forums but we don't have an organized list of which dealers to visit and which ones to buy from with reasons.

So to make it easier on those who are seeking to purchase the vehicle and want to find out who to talk with and what that dealership is rated at. I'm sure it will also help other buyers too.

To break down dealers I'll add their address and categories that we can choose from. From the name of the dealer to general ratings of the entire dealership. For the dealers we'll go by these ratings: helpfulness, knowledge of vehicle, "willing to go out of the way," personality, level of shady-ness, scumbag level (meaning if they threw in a +<insert stupid amount of mark-up>, and level of how much they keep in contact with you.

As for general dealership this involves how their general manager deals with you in person (if applicable), if they're community oriented, informed, overall helpful-ness, service, pricing on their vehicles and overall rating of how they treat you (from the front desk, to the finance guy, to the dealers and other workers).

Levels are graded on a 1-6 scale. 1 being the least and 6 being the most. A 7 will be given if they are absolutely flipping amazing.

Other categories will be rated in:
(1) - Fking Horrible
(2) - Poor
(3) - unsatisfactory
(4) - Ok-ish
(5) - Good
(6) - Great
(7) - Fking Amazing

Scumbag and Shady-ness ratings:
(1) Fking Scumbag/Fking Shady
(2) Scumbag/Shady
(3) Not a scumbag/shady

Multiple reviews of one place will be averaged and to prevent some dealers who are sneaky I'm going to only count reviews from members who have at least 30 post counts. Legitimate post counts--and when they joined the forum. Of course there are some other factors in there too.

Rich is an amazing guy and he earned my business within a few minutes on the phone. He's active on this forum so he is knows and understands the customer and what we want. Very helpful and answered all my questions. Doesn't BS and gives it to you straight and honest. I put my initial deposit down with him. Also working to get JDM/Import parts for the FR-S so he is truly plugged in and knows his stuff.

Put South Coast Subaru to the bottom because they just surprised a person with a 5k markup when they were going to pickup their preorder, when a couple of weeks ago, it was verified that they would pay MSRP. Also they posted that same car for sale on craigslist and another forum the day before informing the person who ordered the car that it was ready

Btw, I wasn't sure about how to rate the 'shady-ness' and 'scumbag level'. I put low numbers to indicate that he was awesome, but I'm not sure if that follows the ratings above :)

Eddie Minjarez is the name and phone number on all the ads

just got an email from him
"No there is a mark up on these cars just like every other dealer. Fortunately we have the lowest mark up in the area the price for this car is 32,459. Is this somthing you would like to check out?"

my response
"Actually the dealer I ordered from has no markup and second this is the largest markup in the area yet. Renick no markup. Timmons $2000 markup. Puente Hills $3000 markup. MSRP w/ delivery $26,265. So this is a +$6000 markup. Is this tax, registration, all fees, and 0% APR then?"

I've been hearing this from some dealerships. They actually call one another to find out how much that dealership is marking it up to set some kind of standard around their area.

copy and pasted outline because my experience was horrible.
Spoke to the manager. He told me they had a black one, manual. Told me to drive down there for a test drive. Went (hour away and I was very tired that day) and he barely acknowledged me and shunned me off to a salesman who barely spoke english. The black MT, turns out was sold the day before. They had a red though. I said it's 25K, it better be auto. He told me they don't make an auto. I said they do, whatever... haven't driven it. Let's go. He said, no... wait one minute... *speaks to manager* Comes back and tells me I have to fill out paperwork and do a credit check. I told him why? You never said that over the phone... he then said he never promised me a test drive but only to see the car. I told him I went to the FRS Party and I've LOOKED/SEEN a bunch of them already... I wouldn't have driven to see his. I said this is ridiculous and I'm going to report him, he's losing a customer. He told me go ahead and that he didn't care. I said, okay, I'll make sure to let everyone on the forum know not to go to you and they just walked away... so did we. SO pissed.

Walked in RIGHT after I got heated with Hamer / Mission Hills. Luckily, they had a white auto and an orange manual. I got to drive both, almost instantly. Roger, the manager I believe, kept his word and didn't make me do any paperwork or put any money down. The saleslady was nice and took me on a test drive in both vehicles. She had a little trouble with the manual and kind of made me feel scared at times. That was fine as soon as I took the wheel, I understood what all the hype was about. Up until this point, everything was great 100%. However, when she came back after her pep talk or whatever from her other manager (?) She was pretty pushy about us filling out paperwork and saying that she could get us the Raven manual THAT day through a dealer trade. (this was not going to happen nor were we ready to just sign papers with no loan or cash in hand). I made it very clear I was there for a test drive and I would not have any money for her unless I had a right of refusal with the car in front of me. She couldn't assure me of a delivery date and said I wouldn't have rights of refusal because I'd be buying the car that day. When we told her repeatedly we'd rather have her locate one and then we'd come back, she then insulted us by saying "I guess you aren't ready to buy the car, I thought you were, etc." Maybe she was right. But if she actually knew me, my collection of cars, or how my family works... we might be frugal, but will definitely reward good customer service. She kept using Pure Pricing as leverage saying that we'll never find the car elsewhere and for cheaper, which I found petty. I told her I was on other waitlists and that I am not risking my spot to sign papers for an imaginary car with no arrival date (which she could not track unless I sign for - BS!)

Went into the dealership to see if they had an FR-S at all and they did. Mark was really good guy and informed me on everything on what scion offers. The good thing is that the car came with rims and sports tires and its a good thing cause I am not a fan of the stock rims and tires scion gave the FR-S. The pricing was $30,000 with taxes, rims, and tires for an AM but with a trade in and working out a deal I got the FR-S for $24,000. Love my FR-S :thanks:

Before I bought my FR-S at Power Irvine I went here and seen they had three FR-S. The bad part was they they added rims, tires, and some dealer package which the total cost of all three cars where $34,000??? I wanted to test drive the car and the sales man told me only serious buyer can test drive the FR-S. So I asked to see if I can get approved for a loan to get a FR-S and if I did qualify I would bring my truck so I can trade that in. I filled out the paper work and it only took 3 mins for him to come and tell me I did not make enough money and that I did not qualify?

Rowdybell 06-08-2012 01:14 AM

I got my car from south bay Toyota, they get a 7 in every category, no mark ups or installation of crap to jack up the price they said they won't do that to any fr-a they get. Carson Toyota is the place for aftermarket parts I order my car there but south bay Toyota got what I wanted first so I had to buy. Talk to Luis in parts at Carson Toyota, he's the man, can get you anything from Japan.

Don't worry about it, they are doing everything they can to make sure they do not sell cars already. :D

don't focus on where not to go. Focus on where to go. :)

I picked up my car from Jeff Chang at Longo in El Monte over the weekend. He personally has more orders for cars to be delivered than most other dealers will get in their annual allocation. Sold at MSRP with under $90 in doc fees. Smart. Won't waste your time.

Check out my blog below for his email address.

Mitch didnt have a wait list when i went to purchase my car...I visited him for the first time on memorial day and drove my car home the next day. Also, FYI last time i talked to him he said he was just going to sell the cars he got first come first serve and he had a firestorm and ultramarine when i last drove by the dealership. Just tell him Alex sent you.

I have heard Jeff Chang @ Longo is awesome as well.

Matt, when did you put down your deposit there, out of curiosity? I put it down 5/15 and am still waiting.

I spoke to Mitch and he said they're putting about $1000 in dealer accessories on their FR-S's. Alarm + door guards + tint.

This is a conversation he started on facebook. People were interested and asked for the price, where he STATED, "$25k." I go to his STEALership and see this bullshit on the cars.:bs:

Im sorry I do not believe this. Jerry aka Mr Scion is not just a good friend of mine, an honest person and also one of Scion's known "Scion Champions" Now Jerry is not the person who determines the price of these cars, its his boss.

The Scion pure pricing is there, but this car is the money maker for the dealerships right now. Instead of black balling these dealers, why dont you guys call first and see if there is a bare bones car available?

I've got nothing to tell you since you were never there when i spoke to him. But i will say this, What they did was dirty and i know it. There is no "bare bones car" coming to the states, this car was completely stock and had nothing special about it, so the $5k mark up was bull shit! Other dealerships are marking it up but have added their own things onto it to justify the price. There are two other dealerships within a 3-5 mile radius around them that are selling this exact setup for msrp. So why the mark up? The ONLY reason they had a fire storm frs was because i told Jerry that was the one i had wanted. He was able to trade another dealership, so for THEM to mark it up the last minute is bull shit and bad customer service.

They also called my father back and told him they would've taken back the mark up and sold it to me for msrp but because i black listed them they werent going to (more bullshit). If they really meant that, they wouldve sold it for msrp in the first place, PLUS it was Jerry who was telling me he didnt care if i black listed them and told me to do so if its how i truly felt. I have the messages to prove all this since you dont believe me. Their associates dont give a damn about the customer, they all LITERALLY told me to leave and go to another dealership. WHO RUNS A DEALERSHIP THAT WAY?!?!!? I'm a citizen of the city they're doing business in and you try slapping me in the face that way. Fuck them and their business, I hope it ends up in a pile of bricks one day.

Sidenote: This so called, "Scion Champion" didnt even know about the FRS when i went up to him in February of this year. What does that tell you?

Scion of Pasadena

I think my experience with Scion of Pasadena was atypical. But it was good. Here it is.

After seeing that no Subaru dealer was going to have the BRZ, I e-mailed the internet manager at Scion Pasadena. He sent me a bunch of information and I wrote back and said can I order a car if necessary or do I have to pick from what you have coming in? He referred me to the fleet manager who handled all the custom orders for the dealership. I talked to him on the phone and said I wanted a Hot Lava automatic. He said he had one coming in and it wasn't on the wait list because everyone on the wait listed wanted other colors. He said flat out the price, including destination and $600.00 in factory options, was 26,600. He said it was mine if I wanted it and I could test drive it when it came in. I stopped by two days later and he gave me a print out of the car with the VIN#, specs, etc.

It came in on May 29. I test drove it. There was no BS, no 'market adjustment' or anything like that. I paid 26,600, which included the 700 destination and 600 in factory options.

One thing he mentioned was he said they were thinking of adding leather and perhaps other options to all the cars. But then he added that they weren't sure they would do that because they wanted to keep things affordable.

Anyway, my experience at Scion Pasadena was pretty good. The guy I worked with was Phil Salmon.

^Symes is a good dealership. My crew used to host events for them a few years back. The GSM kinda reminds me of Scarface. LOL.

Just walk out from there and reported to Toyota SCION directly about this mark up. Dealer will be fined for mark up and other etc.

I'm dealing with an honest agent in a decent Scion dealership in Ontario. I have a whiteout FRS ordered at MSRP (altho includes rear bumper applique, wheel looks and trunk carpet mat). I have my BRZ already so if someone wants to get my order please PM me so I can pass you to the agent. Car is expected to arrive before the end of the month! Cheers! :happy0180:

apologies for the explicit language, and i actually did contact toyota/scion directly and they seemed to tell me that they couldn't tell the dealer what to price it at because of their "pure pricing." So, they pretty much weren't or couldn't do anything about it.

I initially planned on buying my Ultramarine FR-S here. I did all the paperwork early as they made it urgent in order to secure it. Came in 5/26. Was told the car would arrive to take delivery 5/29. Car never showed even after 7 days than what they told me. They blame Scion corp for providing inaccurate info. System showed car has been sitting on port since 5/26. HORRIBLE experience as I drove to this dealership from Irvine more than 4 times. Plus the HORRENDOUS WAIT to get things done...paperwork, finance, downtime wait. Waste of my time and trouble.

Ended up not taking delivery and picking up the car at South Coast Toyota. No wait, no bullshit.
