Have you fallen in love with this car?
 

I first heard about Toyota and Subaru coming together to make a sports car from my dad. I looked it up online and saw the test mule shots and didn't think anything more of it for a long time. Well, this past December I got a PlayStation 3 with Gran Turismo 5. They gifted me a Toyota 86 and so it was the only car I had in the garage to start with. Strangely, I thought it was kind of cool but figured it was either a prototype or a variant of the LFA. Well, a few days later I decided to see how that Toyota/Subaru car was progressing. To my surprise, it was the same car I had in GT5 and it was going to be affordable! So I watched a promotional video on it and heard the basic specs and my first thoughts were, "Well it seems kind of neat but it's nothing special." At the time, I was hoping for a new all wheel drive turbo coupe with a dual clutch transmission to be a performance successor to my Eclipse GSX.

I started looking at it more in GT5 and at pictures and info online and suddenly I got an exciting thought, "Maybe this really is what I've been waiting for!" It may not have mega all season traction and power but it should have what I want more than anything - a fun feeling. Plus it checks all of my other boxes, being modern, simple, practical, fuel efficient, etc. And the design gives me that nostalgic 90's vibe. Since then, I haven't stopped thinking about it and have come to realize how special this car really is. I haven't felt this way about a car since the 97-99 Eclipse GSX. I think I'm in love. :wub:

So what's your love story? Or is it just another car for you?

I liked the concept in '09, didn't think too much of it.

Later, I heard Tada-San talk about the car and all it embodies, and I fell in love with it.

I first heard about it when Scion released the second concept. I was repelled by the fact that it was a Scion but the car looked really great, very serpentine (although those concept wheels were ugly). Ever since my interest in the car has increased all the way up to the official production reveal. Now i just have to finish up my last 12 credits and land a decent job...

I think the thing that really made me fall in love with this car leading up to it's release has been that it's more of a return to classic roots. I've always been more interested in cars that i grew up with, mostly 90's cars then just adding more power and making it even more pigfat.

I've been following this car as far back as to when it was solely speculation.

It's amazing how far it's come.

I remember back when the first pics we had was the ugly draped thing on the nurburgh ring.

I even traveled to another country just to see it at the Montreal auto show.

I drove an hour and took a day off from work to check out a pre-production BRZ.

A couple days ago I drove an hour just to check out a production FR-S.

I'm scheduled for my local Scion First Drive.

I think I'm a little obsessed. More than likely this will be my first brand new car.

To be honest I never really liked the styling of the car and somewhat nervous of the engine/transmission feeling good but it seems to have the spirit that I'm looking for. Fun to drive is the main priority, going fast doesn't matter to me or else I'd look elsewhere. I just want the FRS to be fun and something that I can learn how to actually drive better with. My S2K was great in every way but it's a very non-forgiving car that will bite the first second it has the chance

I found out about this car pretty late but I was just looking around online and went to Subaru's website and saw this car on the front page and the rest was history....haven't stopped thinking about it since then.

I've been in love with this car since I first found out about it this past March. I'm so glad it took me this long. I couldn't bear waiting as long as most on here have.

Sometime in late 2011, I decided I needed a new car. My current car had been driven hard (2008 Audi TT Quatttro) and it was starting to have problems.

I was lusting after the nd MX-5 because I had been autoxing a nb miata for a season or so (co-drive), and I began to love light momentum machines. Then a a bud told me about the BRZ/FR-S/GT-86.

The more I read, the more I wanted the car.

I have sat in the the pre production limited, and I got to ride in an FR-S (thanks Mattles).

I want the car so badly; I spend too much time on this and other forums trying to learn everything possible about the car (BRZ Limited) and it's potential delivery date.

I work for Toyota and my first 2 cars were Imprezas that I loved dearly. I've wanted a RWD sports car since '06 as well and nearly bought a Miata but couldn't handle the soft top year round. This car is a combination of my favorite car companies and is a light weight, RWD sports car. It is exactly what I want. I just need to hold out a little longer until I ensure that throwing a baby into the equation doesn't pummel my finances.

I will drive it from Denver to Aspen for the honeymoon to break it in!

Ive been following it from before the first concept leaked. I love small 2+2 cars that handle well and this is really the only one on the market that is affordable right now. More like fallen in lust as opposed to love. Or perhaps its a dirty obsession. I will probably try to find a way to sleep in it my first night, or at least a nap.

I'm so glad I really didn't get into it till march too. I was all about the 13' genesis coupe forever and then my buddy said that scion was making rwd car with a boxer engine meant for drifting and that's what got me interested.

I may do a drive from MD to NY for a shawarma just to have the break in faster :)

I feel in love with it when it was still an idea/ rumor so many years ago.

I've always wanted a low slung coupe since I was 7yrs old. Cars are a huge part of my life, most of my friends barely know how to change a flat so every time I talk about it they seemed annoyed. I never had a real friend that loved cars as much as me, so talking on forums like this is a stress reliever. I heard about the FRS when it was just a rumor, then I almost forgot about it. Then two years ago I kept seeing articles about it popping up. So I would look into it. And now I can't stop youtubing, googling or constantly think about it everyday.

Its the car I've always dreamed of. Not too powerful, focused on the driving experience.

As soon as I know the verdict, my mom is supposedly going to help me out to get one. Lets just hope she doesn't think 25k is too expensive. Depending on the dealership's price.

I jumped for joy when I heard back in '08ish that Toyota planned to build a lightweight sports car again! The Celica and MR2 Spyder just never did it for me, and the Supra was too big and too expensive. I had just sold my MR2 Turbo, thinking it too big and not as much fun as the first-gen MR2's, despite being faster and a lot better-looking.

I think originally this car was slated to weigh about 2500lbs, make low-200's for horsepower, and cost around $20k. Perfect! As time progressed however, I kept hearing what seemed like more and more bad news. The projected weight kept going up, the power kept going down, and the price seemed doomed to go up as well. At the time I wanted nothing more in the car than seats and a steering wheel, power windows and other weight-adding features be damned! In late 2010 it was announced the car would be offered as a Scion, and my hopes for that were dashed. Toyotas come with manual windows. Scions do not. Damn you, Scion!

Fast forward to 2011. Concepts started to be substantiated with real power and weight claims. While not totally impressed, I was glad they managed to keep the weight below 2800lbs. 200hp was going to be enough; anything less and I'd be pissed! It still was only a blip on the radar, though. I was happy as a clam with my MR2 and had just finished dumping a ton of money into it in the form of a big brake kit, coilovers, bigger wheels with wider tires, and a fixed bucket Recaro seat.

Then I heard a little tidbit of information that made me want the car again: I read that the dashboard was designed so that a roll cage could be fitted without cutting up the dash. WHAT? REALLY? I have zero intention of caging the car, but the fact that Toyota designed the car that way told me that they built it with enthusiasts in mind.

Fast forward to the past 6 months and I've been glued to my computer every day, reading up on all the latest developments on the car. I can honestly say I know more about this car before purchasing than any other car I've bought. I've read more specs, watched more footage, done more research than anything. And I've driven every other car I would possibly consider as an alternative to this one.

Something strange happened along the way, too. I started working for Audi last year and they set me up with a brand new S4, all loaded up with features. It was a BIG step up from my tired MR2. Suddenly, I didn't care about the weight savings quite as much as before. Since the Scion comes mono-spec, I knew I would have to look to the Subaru version. This irked me a little because I've been a Toyota die-hard for years, but my best friend is a Subaru die-hard and I've helped him along the way with his two STi-swapped 2.5RS sedans. I also frequented the local NASIOC meets with him, moreso than I found myself going to Toyota meets because there were simply more people with cooler cars. I wasn't getting the stuff I wanted in the Scion, so I figured "what the heck, time to become a Subaru enthusiast". I would've stuck with Audis but their lightest sporty car is the TT and it now only comes with the dual-clutch automatic... boo!

To make a long story less long, I put a deposit down for a Galaxy Blue Silica BRZ Limited 6MT on March 4th and have been madly following every thread on this forum since. I took an hour from work to go check out a pre-production GBS BRZ, and have signed up for a local FR-S test drive event early next month - hopefully I'll get to drive the car before my pre-order arrives! Not having driven the car yet I guess I can't say I'm in love, but I sure as hell am in lust!

Early on I saw it as a concept but figured it would be vaporware.

At this time I thought my next car was either going to be a Mustang or WRX.

When I saw that the 86 was coming to production, all signs pointed to it being an S2000 coupe.

I wouldn't say I've fallen in love; but I'm really, really excited for this car.

The little red Mazda, beat to crap, basically pink, was my first car. This is the goodbye picture - it sits next to the silver tC that replaced it. It is 17 years old in this picture. The FR-S I just ordered will replace the tC... a car I like but do not love the way I did the MX-3.

As I said, the MX-3 was my first car. Like the FR-S, it wasn't really fast. The 4cyl engine barely eked out 88hp. It had huge blind spots. It looked like a space shuttle. But it was low, sleek, and handled very well. When I drove it, I felt like it was a part of me, an extension of me - not like I was sitting in a room.

It took me a long time to give it up. It was repaired several times. After a collision with a deer, USAA wanted to total it, but I begged them to spare it - and they did, grudgingly. I drove it another five years after that. In the end, it came to the point that I was spending more than it was worth every year to keep it running. At well over 100k miles, it was time to let it go.

I wanted to replace it with the same sort of car. You can imagine my dismay when I realized that no such car existed. I looked at everything. Minis, Mazda 3, Civics, the Genesis coupe, etc. I quickly realized that no four-door car would satisfy. That narrowed the field considerably. Ultimately I was able to get over the fact that the tC didn't come in red (boo!) and chose it based on price and features. I'd still recommend it, of course. It's a nice car.

But it didn't ever call to me like the MX-3 did... and the way the FR-S does now. It is exactly what I want.

So yes, I've been in love with this car from the moment I laid eyes on it.

During my first drive home on some back roads :)

been driving it for nearly 1000 miles and I finally did fall in love today. I ran it up to the redline for the first time and everything felt right in the world. This car begs to be driven on the ragged edge, I love it.

Was all set to buy the Genesis coupe in 2010. Saw the Scion on youtube at the new york auto show Janaury 2011. Immediately fell for the car and have been patiently waiting for over a year, was supposed to get my Raven today but there are issues in Canada with the release. Love the car so much that I have completely repainted my garage including epoxying the floor in anticipation of a new addition to the family. My wife thinks I have lost my mind. Thanks to everyoe on this board as it is the only way I am getting through these final few days of anticipation. Have really enjoyed all the pictures, never gets tired.

3 years ago I had to sell my NC Miata, which is a car that I loved. Ever sinse then, I have been wanting a car like my NC, only with slightly more cargo room. Well, this seems to be the car. Fun to drive, but can also fit a set of 4 wheels. Hopefully I will fall in love with this car like I did the NC.

I've been aware of it from the very beginning. But it seemed way too far fetched for a company like Toyota to put out such a car. Then it went through some design revisions, and it seemed like the car would never come out. Then I saw the concept at the LA Auto Show last year. It was amazing. I wanted it more then any other car there, mainly because it was attainable. I was however, still hesitant about final build quality and feel.

I signed up for the First 86 program but unfortunately wasn't selected (right away, I was an alternate). I was bummed. I saw the production version at the NY Auto Show in April. My fears of a cheap interior or shoddy build quality went away. I absolutely fell in love with the design and its feel. I believe Dadhawk said it perfectly in another thread - you don't sit in this car, you wear it. From the moment I open the door to the moment I put the car cover back on her, I simply cannot wipe the smile off my face. I havent been this happy driving a car since the first night I went for a drive when I got my license.

So yes, I have fallen in love with this car.

I'll be honest, I didn't know about this car until very recently. I've owned 3 cars so far in my life. My first car was a '92 Nissan Sentra that cost $500 and had no muffler when I bought it, it also smelled like a lake because the trunk leaked and it had mold in it. That car was alright, had decent gas milage, but it really wasn't much. My next car after that was a 2000 oldsmobile alero. The car wasn't small and though it had a decent engine, it was severely underpowered, the thing hated hills. Now I have a 2000 mazda 626 which I just love. I'm so comfortable in this car that just driving anything else make me feel out of place and even a bit nervous.

I decided I wanted a new car a few months ago when my dad (who works for toyota) started talking about the different things he could do to get new cars. He pitched ideas to me and my older brother and I took them pretty serious so I started doing the math and looking at cars. The way I saw it, I had 3 choices I could make, keep my 626 and save my money (smart, but not what I wanted to do), find a used mazda in good condition (ideal, but not smart considering I had a chance at a brand new toyota for a close to the same money), or take my dad up on his ideas and get a toyota.

No offense, but I really didn't want any toyota vehicles, they just feel pretty "meh" to me, so I steered clear of them. Lexus cars were too expensive, so I turned to Scion. I liked the tC a lot, but I test drove one and something felt off about it to me, couldn't really get comfortable in the car. So I was looking at an xD. It was affordable, I could load it with all the options I wanted and still have it close to the price of a tC, so I almost got one. But then one day I clicked on Scion's site and the FR-S was on the front page with no other info. I fell in love with the car the instant I saw it.

I've always wanted a sports car, always wanted an orange sports car. Don't ask me why, I don't know, it's just always been cool to me. I got excited, but nervous when I saw it because I doubted it would be something I could afford. I was overjoyed when I saw the price so I started obsessing over it, but had to wait to preorder it because it's small, and I'm tall. I didn't have the specs for it and couldn't find them so I had no clue if I would fit. I was originally going to wait until it was released so I could sit in one/test drive it, but then my dad encouraged me to pull the trigger and order it early. I ordered it a month ago but still don't have a delivery date and it's killing me. I have definitely fallen in love with this car.

Yeah, my Eclipse is getting extremely expensive to repair. It was this past January when my transmission went out that I first started toying with the idea to get a new car. But of course, the FR-S wasn't out yet and nothing else would have satisfied me so I just repaired my Eclipse.

And just last night, I started feeling a knocking/clicking coming from the front of the car. It's definitely something in the drivetrain which probably isn't going to be good. :(

But it's just frustrating because the car drives perfectly once I fix what needs to be fixed but then every 6 months, something starts to break down again and I have put another 1-3k in it. So what I really want to do is retire it to backup and snow duty. Plus, I can take it apart and play around with it more in my spare time - making it a project car of sorts.

So anyway, the FR-S is the only acceptable replacement daily driver I've found for my car. I was planning to hold off another year or so before I bought one but I may have to try and get it sooner rather than later if my Eclipse needs another several thousand in repairs.
